BEST Colored pencils for oil pastels? (Ep. 4 in the Oil Pastels for MIXED MEDIA BEGINNERS)

This is Episode 4 in this Oil Pastels series made specifically for Mixed Media Artists, beginners and upwards actually!! Since many oil pastel artists rely on Colored pencils to refine their pieces and add details, I wanted to know: Is there a BETTER choice of pencils to work with Oil Pastels over others?
Today I wanted to test it out for myself to see.
I'm comparing 3 makes: Prismacolor, Derwent Drawing and Polychromos by Faber - Castell. The results surprised me! I'm glad I tested them all!

If you used them as you usually do rather than this tapping motion which isn't going to work with,with any pencil. I think they would work,that's how I use them and they work for me especially the Derwent drawing pencils which are my favourite pencils

Hello there. I have been watching the series, but I'm kinda confused about this one. What were you trying to accomplish with the colored pencil? I mean, I use colored pencils to refine my oil pastel paintings and frankly all the brands I use work well. But I dont get that like... tapping? scrapping? movement.... Cause no colored pencil would work with that movement. I ask this with most respect!!! Dont u feel bad or criticized by any means!!! I use Prismacolors, Luminance, Derwent Drawing, Polychromos, Coloursoft, and Holbein, which are the 6 brands I own. The only difference I have noticed is that the harder the lead the finer the details I can get and that if I need to indent or reveal some underpainting colors I use a well sharpened lead, but for blending or moving (a little) the pastel then I use a blunt lead.

No disrespect taken! because I'm so inexperienced I literally don't know if there's a difference until I try. If there's not, then that's good to know too 🤷‍♀ Also I have people emailing me everyday if this works or if that works, so I genuinely need to know so I know what to tell them lol - and now I know!

That’s what I was thinking. What happens if you try drawing/coloring with them like you normally would?

yes, good thinking. test everything you can for compatibility. i myself use soft pastel dust spread with a brush as an underpainting; it is effective for speed and much cheaper than the expensive polychromos or the sticky and possibly muddy mix of oil pastels. however, the main theme and details are drawn with polychromos and white oil pastel that allows light over dark with the pencils themselves once a white layer is laid on top the dark pencil.

Derwent Drawing has a Chinese White that is fabulous. I don't know how it would work on oil pastels, though.

It's really too bad that you can't really do fine details with the pastels themselves. I like them but for me they are so clunky.

What kind of test is this you're tapping and scratching oil pastel scratch easy there isn't a pencil in the world that's going to leave its pencil behind in this method

Well maybe you knew that already. But I didn’t, so I was doing the test to see for myself. It’s how I learn things. Testing is how anyone learns things. So kuddos for you for not needing to learn it 👍 but don’t chastise someone for figuring something out in their own.
