I LOVE the vivid and RICH colors that you get from painting with Oil Pastels. But you know what I HATE?? Those nasty, jagged edges that make your painting look like it was done by a 5 year old with Crayons.
Today I'm setting out to fix that BUT, I've never tried this before so not sure if it will work...or not!
Join me as I see if Linseed Oil will do the trick!

How do YOU get rid of that ugly ragged edge? If you wanted to catch Episodes 1-4 you can watch them here: kzbin.info/aero/PLn5mGTkPuQK6yF6XyI2MZHgWeyB3Uoix3 What's your biggest takeaway? Will you give Oil pastels a try?

I use an extra firm color shaper to smooth out the edges and to blend in between layers. I do a lot of wildlife art so you can use this tool to get a fur texture as well.

@@KarenCampbellArtist I wanted to thank you for doing this series. The truth is that there is almost no content for this medium! When I first started using oil pastels and went online and was surprised to see, not only how little info was out there, but how bad it was. Plus they were, morr or less, all the same; same kind of painting, no explanations whatsoever, no experimentation, no comparison, NOTHING, sometines not even a voice over! It was sad. Even now, is almost impossible to find something decent.So you can imagine, oil pastels been my favorite medium, I got super excited to see you doing this!!! So thank you again. 🥰

I'm wondering if Lavender or Rosemary essential oils might work for this as well. Very organic, nothing toxic. They work amazingly at blending colored pencils! You want to try it and see?

Looking really good with this. But if the towels with the linseed oil can combused, how about the painting? And would other oils work the same or just linseed?

Hi Karen, I will try to see if this oil works on mixed media paper; because an eye I had done I think 2 years ago: my first time using this oil pastels, I loved it but like you do not like the jaggeding edges lol🤣thank you for your wonderful classes and videos too.

Oh I love her hair...the layers!!!! Ok oil pastels are always your last step which you know..but HAVE you tried Galkyd LITE? ITS LIKE USING LINSEED BUT DRIES ALMOST...ALMOST AS FAST AS ACRYLICS!!!!!
@moniquehoudeOTE
@moniquehoudeOTE 6 ай бұрын
I would give it til next day to call it dried...but it's so much neater and able to use precisely....same section as linseed or any oil products in the stores...they have Galkyd lite and just Galkyd. And if you don't want to waste your linseed to clean your brush there is odorless turn that is nontoxic...and you don't have to wait 3 days at all and yes, they now even make paper for oil. You just can really give yourself ability to blend and soften edges and add layers...they also mKe water solvable oil pastels..not as juicy but easier to show your layers quicker!!! You did a beautiful job!!!

Hi Karen! Do you think Gamsol would also work? And how do you "properly dispose" of the paper towels with the linseed oil?
@ValleyMermaid
@ValleyMermaid 6 ай бұрын
YES, @micheleyoung9698!! Mineral Spirits, Gamsol, and even Odorless Turpentine, (but it goes by a different name), works! I’ve been using the Gamsol. It blends out beautifully and is even good for fine detail. I put a few cotton balls in a small jar and pour the Gamsol in it so that the cotton balls absorb the Gamsol. Then I put my brush in there and pick up the Gamsol onto the bristles from the cotton balls, this way, I don’t put too much in the paint brush, then I blend out the oil pastels, and it turns into paint, basically! I love using these this way! When I’m done, I just put the lid on my jar and then when the cotton balls get too dirty, I just throw them away and we play some new ones. Also, Sennelier has an oil pastel blending stick that works really well, which I haven’t tried yet, but it comes highly recommended. I prefer the Gamsol way just because I can get small details with small paint brushes.

OMG! I am so glad to know I am not supposed to mix my brushes! I have some Princeton Velvet Touch mixed media brushes that say they are for acrylic and oil, that I actually found use GREAT with gouache! Jeanette recommended and I love them for gouache! But I have been using them for Gamsol to blend out my oil pastels like you are doing with the Linseed oil, and this is the first time I am hearing that I should not interexchange my brushes between mediums! use my brushes for other mediums! That is so confusing. Why then do the brushes say for mixed media if you shouldn't use them for let's say gouache or acrylic and then oil or acrylic as well?
@veystone2580
@veystone2580 6 ай бұрын
I know, right? Is a marketing technique to advertise brushes. That way they sell more. Sometimes those brushes are not suitable for all the mediums they say they are good for. But if they do work for several mediums, instead of buying one brush for different mediums, you should buy the same brush (or brushes) for your different mediums and designate them for one medium only. Cause even if a brush is good for gouache and for acrylic, the fact is that acrylics are tougher to the bristles than gouache is and at some point the brush will become damage, so to have your brushes live longer and perform the best, you should have designated brushes for each painting medium, and also for things like gesso, or mod pogde or modeling paste, or whatever. Even if is the exact same brush, just buy multiples! Hope this helps. 😊

Thanks so much, Karen! I had no idea! Now, could you tell me why some folks use Gamsol on their colored pencils?
@ValleyMermaid
@ValleyMermaid 6 ай бұрын
I use Gamsol the way Karen shows here. I just use it or Mineral spirits because I have it. It works the same and it’s odorless. I think people just use whichever based on what they have on hand.

@ValleyMermaid
@ValleyMermaid 6 ай бұрын
Hi, @@funnydogmom 🙂. The Gamsol, does exactly what the Linseed oil does in Karen’s demonstration here. It blends out the oil pastel almost like a liquid paint. Gamsol can also smooth out colored pencils.
