Great job Mark explaining the origins and various models of the Double Neck Guitar. You of course are correct these were mostly only used for live performances of Classic songs. Any of us that have played these know they are very uncomfortable to play for a long duration. especially while standing up as they weigh about 13 pounds.

Hey Al. Yeah, the first guy on the chat asked me if I was going to include live performances. I thought to myself, hmmm, I don't thikn any guitarist would go into the the studio with a double neck. Unless it was photo day. As always, I sincerely appreciate the support. Take care. Mark

Hey Chozora. Rush fans are die hard. I was weaned on Rush. Recorded the album in Wales and had a blast. If I'm not mistaken, they ran through it once after they set up and then like you said, the first time the engineer hit record they nailed it. Such a great song. I could have gotten a better sound on the chunky part but I was pressed for time and I wanted to do everything as live as possible. I took Neil's death harder than anybody that I've never met. I made a video the day after and talked about what Rush has meant to me over the years. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and comment. Take care and be well. Mark

As the story goes, when they reassembled at Rockfield in the summer of '78 to record Hemispheres they actually tried to do the same thing with "La Villa Strangiato". Geddy said that were trying to "write something beyond our capabilities" in order to stretch themselves musically. Challenge accepted!! LOL🤣 The version of LVS that made it to vinyl was not done in one take, although they really, really tried. I think I've read somewhere that ir was, at the time, the longest amout of studio time they spent on a single song. Most of that was trying to get it in one take. Interesing to note that I hae seen them play LVS live more than once.

We could easily go down the Rush rabbit hole. I remember meeting a guy in college who was a big Rush fan but the only albums he knew were Presto, Hold Your Fire, and Roll the Bones. Signals was the last Rush album I liked from beginning to end. They started losing me with Grace Under Pressure and I was done after Power Windows. I'll always think of Rush from Rush-Signals as the "real" Rush and the rest are just a collection of songs that I enjoyed well enough in concert but never got into. I could be missing out but I didn't even give it a chance after Hold Your Fire. Time Stands Still jumped the shark for me.

I don't think they're as under-rated as people profess them to be. I was immediately drawn to them in 1980, when my older brother came home with the new Permanent Waves album. I saw them live in '81 and 11 more times after that. People who know great music, know Rush. Most people who know rock, know who Neil Peart was. His drumming was superior - the best, but just as important, his lyrics were not typical rock fare and clearly show that he was a deep thinker. As for under-rated Canadian bands, I'd go with Moxy and Triumph.

It's a good list, all set in the same time period which was a good time for 12 strings. After this time period, 12 strings slowly dropped of the charts until they were brought back in the late 1980s and early 1990s by the Heavy Metal, Glame Band, Hair Bands,etc. Keeping the list to only the EDS-1275 leaves out one of the biggest 12 string double neck users, Richie Sambora. He used mostly Ovation double necks. Of the list, only 'Hotel California' charted. It went to number one. 'Wanted Dead or Alive' went to number seven.

very informative video. I have the exact same Harley Benton, how do you keep yours from neck dives. My guitar keeps doing that and I constantly have to hold it up while I play.
@8MinuteAxe Жыл бұрын
Hey Tony. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. There's not a whole lot you can do about the neck dive. I've only broken it out for one show (I only played two songs with it). One thing I do is to make sure that I tune it and get ready to play whatever it is while sitting down and I don't stand with it on the strap until it's time to perform. I'm sure you've done this but you can experiment with increasing the angle (but of course the more the angle the less the cool factor. lol). If it didn't weigh so much some kind of weighted strap would be cool but for that thing it's only adding insult to injury. Sorry I don't have a better solution. Thanks so much for your time and comment. I sincerely appreciate it. Please take care and be well. -Mark

Ooh brother. I just did. Wow. Great musicians. I was in a guitar/drum duo back in the late 90s. We didn't loop though. I filled a lot of space and we harmonized on most of the songs but these guys are like a symphony. It's funny. One of my early intermediate students asked me about looping. I told him that when you're doing it solo and you're building tracks, you have to be dead on accurate with your timing or it all falls apart. Thanks for the recommendation Badrique. I really appreciate it. We "updated" a bunch of the old originals last year. We were very poppy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aX7ZdJ5qg76aZ6M&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe

LOVE Fight the Good Fight. That entire album is very solid. And for sure if I had thought of it, FTGF would have made the list. When I was about 10 I listened to that album over and over. Thanks so much for your time and comment. I sincerely appreciate it. Have a great day. Mark

NO WAY the SG style double necks are not the coolest looking guitar ever, like a muscle car in your lap! Big E looked pretty cool with that 12 string.

I just got my Harley 612 a few weeks ago. I think it is beautiful, but I totally admit that I didn't give much thought to how uncomfortable and back breaking it is. It's not even comfortable to play sitting down, as the area where it makes contact on your leg starts to hurt after a bit due to all the weight sitting on a 2inch strip of contact... Now she sits in her case and I regret the purchase, but it is what it is. I can see why most artists only used them for one song. Plus at 5'9 in height, it looks comically big on me. You need to be 6'+ to pull this off imo, lol.

Maybe the classic acoustic guitar position would help? It means the guitar will not sit on the right leg but between the Legs. Thats my favorite position while sitting

I'm baffled why HB uses the covered pickups on the 6 string.

I'm not in the know but.. what are the benefits of the double guitar? Hard to play both of them at the same time

Hey Karlo. It's mostly for show. Jimmy Page managed to get the most out of it but you're absolutely right. I do appreciate you checking it out. I do mostly 12 string stuff. Here's a pretty cool cover FREE FALLIN TOM PETTY kzbin.info/www/bejne/emKnkJhtaayqla8&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care. Mark

There's a Rik Emmett video that he explains the why pretty well. Intro beginning of "Lay It On The Line" live needed the brighter twangier acoustic sound of the 12 String , flip of a switch and step on a button heavier sound of the 6. He also covers brief history from acoustic to electric .
