Great video thankyou. I am getting my first trail bike after 30 years of not riding off rode. I have only ridden 80cc 2 stroke motor cross. (great fun) I am only 5' 6" and weigh 85kgs. (187lbs) so was going for ttr230 but have since decided on KLX 300r which I will most likely put a lowering link on. Thanks again for the video, very helpful.
@MotocrossHideout3 ай бұрын
Both are great trail bikes. I'm 5'6" and can fit on a klx300r without lowering.
@Ian31993 ай бұрын
@@MotocrossHideout I sat on a TTR230 at the dealership and could only just touch the ground. The seat height is listed as 870mm. The 300r is 900mm which is less than the 230r at 925mm unless you get the s version in which case its 900mm. I figure I will get the 300r and see how I go then lower it if necessary. Thanks again for the video, there are so many different models its hard to navigate through them all, your vid helped. Cheers

Prices are comming down on bikes. I just picked up a KTM EXC 200, '03 model for $2k. 15 hours on new top end and bottom end, and well maintained, upgraded suspension, barely scratched up, and already has a gnarly pipe. It doesn't have modern features like electric start, but 200 2t's are easy enough to kick over that I'm not too worried. There are gems out there for sure, wish i could have picked up an e-start xc-w 200, but saving 2-3 grand seemed like a smarter idea.

Nice! I believe the pre '08 200s had the slightly smaller frame, which is nice if you want a lower seat height (for us vertically challenged).

@MotocrossHideout yes I have . Definitely an option but any recommendations from the 3 main Japanese brands ?
@MotocrossHideout8 ай бұрын
Gotcha. Just curious, is there a specific reason for not wanting a Beta? The next upgrade would probably be a YZ125X - it's a little bit tall at your height, but is very light and good for enduro/trails if you want a 2-stroke. Any 250cc and bigger 4-stroke enduro bike isn't going to feel much lighter than your 230 on the trails.

I believe in 2024, KTM has given the XC's and XC-W's the same transmissions. For desert, until this year, you would have wanted the XC-W because XC's top out at lower speeds. XC for GNCC type stuff, XC-W for enduro or desert. Again, in 2024, transmissions are the same though.
@MotocrossHideout8 ай бұрын
Very interesting - thanks for sharing, Tom! Just checked out Jeff Slaven's video on the 2024 transmissions here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/paOkfaWrq896e9ksi=pLe8cwFYVD62OMgU You're also correct on the older XCW for top-speed - for some reason I knew that it's better for desert high-speed riding, but I got that mixed up in my brain with just "racing" with the close-ratio trans. Thanks!

What bike do you think would be best for me? I ride mostly cross country terrain but ride hard enduro occasionally. I’ve been looking at the ktm125xc and xcw, or the Yamaha yz125x. I also considered the kx250x and the yz250fx. I’m 5’5 as well.

Curious how you think the Honda xr 400 holds up, and what category you’d label it
@MotocrossHideout5 ай бұрын
Good question. I'd consider it a trail bike, similar to the newer CRF250F or KLX300R. The engine is solid with great torque and is very reliable. The biggest complaints are usually: it's kind of heavy (especially if you're a smaller/weaker rider), and it doesn't have electric start, which can make it hard to restart when it's hot or on the side of a hill. If it got E-start, EFI, and stayed the same weight, it would be an awesome trail bike for bigger/taller riders.

Forgot to mention that I own at klx300r already and want to upgrade to something lighter and more peppy. A 2 stroke of some kind basically
@MotocrossHideout3 ай бұрын
The KLX300R to 300cc 2 stroke will be a big jump in power. Sizewise, it's maybe a couple inches taller seat height. Most bikes are made for people 5'10"-6'0" tall, so you may need taller seat/slightly taller bars, and footpegs lowered/moved back on any bike if you want to be comfortable. You just need to be aware that drastic changes can affect your body position while riding, so you don't want the mods to move you "back" on the bike or else your weight will not be balanced, if that makes sense.

Beta xtrainer 300 2 stroke for best beginner
@MotocrossHideout3 ай бұрын
While it's tame compared to a full enduro 300, I don't recommend it to a complete beginner that's never ridden before. They still have a lot of power when you twist the throttle wide open. For someone that is comfortable riding off-road and wants their first enduro bike for more technical trail riding, then yes it's a great bike! I wish they updated to EFI.

@MotocrossHideout 😂 I'm just Bustin your chops, this is a great video.. Don't know why they stopped selling it here. I live in oregon and have a FE250, with all the Mods it easily outperforms the Fe350 in stock form and it's lighter at around 230lbs currently.

I don't understand the e start generation. If somebody couldn't start your bike you knew they had no business being on it. Maybe 1 dude out of 50,000 can start my BRP. Now I see people afraid to push start bikes after their button quit working. They might "hurt" it they say.. Fragile, they are getting very very fragile.
@MotocrossHideout8 ай бұрын
I understand your point Brent, but I kinda see it like comparing hand crank to electric start cars. It's so much more convenient, but as you say, anyone can do it... I don't mind kicking over a 450 (or 650), but why would I if I have a 'magic button'? 😆
@Willowcreek198 ай бұрын
@@MotocrossHideout you're missing my point. It once was you were responsible for getting yourself out of a situation. Now everybody has a melt down once electricity fails. No phone, no gps, no e start. No go. It's a different, softer, less capable crowd. We had paper maps, intelligence and muscle. Now it just takes money.

Some of the terrain these bikes are designed for are two sketchy and dangerous to be kickstarting your bike on. The last thing you want to do is kick start your bike when you stop to assess your next route down or cross something when you're on the lip of a hill where it's 50 ft slope down on your right and 60 ft slope down on your left where you really have no room to put your foot down and kick start your bike or when you stall somewhere unexpected. We're not talking about MX tracks here or regular dirt trails.
@WeTheBelievers17768 ай бұрын
Hehe has a confused with not knowing how to Kickstart your bike when it's more about not being able to Kickstart your bike when you're on top of a mountain assessing your next route or when you stole an unexpected spot that is dangerous and the last thing you want to do is kick start your bike because you can't get the proper footing down. He seems to think all terrain is the terrain he rides.
