I think there's an argument to say that the train track people Germ hangs out with are what Woolie is refering to, sure you can't start out with a nice house or aparment, but you can just up and leave, build from scratch something, somewhere else. I haven't been in that situation (and no one should really) but i've heard so many stories of people raising above it, i belive everyone can at least try.

I have nothing against this game personally, but why is it that many of the characters of these ‘story-driven’ games seem to have no life prospects. Life is Strange has Max being a photographer, which saddles you with debt before you even buy the thousands of dollars camera, and this game has a literal college dropout who has had violent psychotic breaks in a dying coal town, which is kinda a triple whammy in terms of no prospects.

Makes them more relatable. On my first playthrough I was kinda sad, the game is open-ended like that - you don't know whether Bea will break free and move on with her life, leave her sad sack of a dad and his shitty hardware store behind? will Mae break free from her past and find a decent job in her hometown, maybe hang out with Bea at the hardware store for the time being? will Gregg and Angus move on with their lives or get stuck in dead-end retail jobs behind the counter? Who knows. Hopefully they will. I'm still waiting for that update they promised to release in December!

YouSoSpice I’m glad you at least find meaning in it, and I do feel this game deserves praise for at least trying to make it a plot point. I just look at all the shit she has to deal with and go ‘yeah, she’s fucked.’ As any one of those (no higher education, town that SHOULD be dead if not for an eldritch manhole, major mental issues that manifest in violent tendencies) are considered major life obstacles enough by themselves, but she’s got a trifecta. Life is strange has max hobbled by being a photographer (Although that was used for major plot events) and her hanging out with Chloe, an irredeemable asshole edgelord with annoyingly blue hair. I mean seriously, dying your hair neon colors should be against the International law...

I have a really weird relationship with this game. On one hand, as a disillusioned, socially liberal, gay millennial, it’s incredibly relatable, and the dialogue is very well written and realistic without being boring. On the other hand, the creator of the game seems to be a pretty radical leftist- IIRC he made a tweet more or less calling for an actual violent communist revolution in the US- and that craziness kind of seeps into the rest of the game. Not always obviously, but it’s there. Plus there’s the fact that, while my earlier statement about relatability applies to the dialogue, the situations are wholly unrelatable to me; and I don’t just mean the murdercult. I’d never be able to make friends with someone like Gregg, Angus, or Bea. I get that their personalities are exaggerated but that causes issues and confusion in the scenes where they’re supposed to be relatable and realistic. It just doesn’t match up and leaves me feeling uncomfortable in a way I don’t think the game intended. Basically, it’s complicated.
