I'm glad to say that I use the T-drag stop less and less and use slalom and snow plow techniques to slow myself down which saves wheel wear, but then I'm getting an old fart (60) and the flow is the thing rather than the sprints and stunts.
@StillAliveAndKicking_4 жыл бұрын
Me too, I hate the t stop, and yes I do a t stop not an L stop. I am incidentally a fellow member of the old fart club. I prefer the snow plough, or slaloming if there is room.

14 months since I started my 80mm 85A wheels seem to last about 3 to 4 months and cost around $60US per set. I have gone around 1400 miles in this time. More than 100 miles per month in the summer with less than 100 miles per month in the winter (which this year was very mild / very little snow but more rain). I do rotate the wheels about every 3 skates with the help of a digital micrometer. I prefer to put the largest wheels in the back to smallest in the front.

Whenever I try to power stop, I do a spin stop. Can I turn this spin into a drag if I keep practicing?
@drescherjm4 жыл бұрын
I do the same 14 months into my skating as a 48 year old. When I first tried the drag / T stop it used to caused me to fall after a spin but then I quickly learned the correct pressure and angle on my dominant right foot. After awhile I learned to convert this to a spin I could control and stop at up to a medium speed (which for me I would say is less than 15 MPH) over that I use drag to spin. I do wish to learn more advanced stops as I hit up to 25 MPH (provided my GPS watch is accurate on speed it seems accurate on distance on a trail) on the biggest hill I dare to go down.

Thanks so much for your elaborate collection of vlogs. I'm in the process of mastering the drag, but I don't yet own it. How do you counter the turn effect when putting your foot down? When I drag my right skate I'm turning right also, vice versa for a left drag. Do I need to shift balance to the outer side of my leading skate, or simply try turning the other side than my drag foot?

@GodOfReality8 жыл бұрын
If wearing out wheels faster with a drag stop is a concern, why not just use a heel brake? Isn't that the same thing?
@ttcherrick8 жыл бұрын
Heel brakes work about as well as putting a foot down riding a bike. If you are toodling around a park at low speed it works fine but if you're making any kind of speed it's almost useless. Tearing around on urban streets and stopping for obstacles/traffic is going to wear down your wheels; no way around it!
@BillStoppard8 жыл бұрын
Wheels provide 4-8 points of contact for quicker and more controlled stops. The heel brake also catches corners/edges dangerously on multi level terrain. I used the heel brake exclusively my first year and went through 2-4 replacement brakes per month.
@InlineDownhillVancouver8 жыл бұрын
I'm not a proponent of heel brakes at all; I think that everyone should learn to enjoy shredding their wheels with all kinds of slides or whatever one is capable of. Heel brakes add weight, can get in the way of many techniques and wear out quickly at speed. HOWEVER, used correctly, heel brakes can be used effectively to come to stop at any speed, even 100 km/h (I'm 100% serious) and even *slightly* more effectively than a t-stop; it depends on the angle of the heel brake and the ability of the skater. Most standard heel brakes will not be so effective at high speeds though because of reduced leverage. I don't recommend heel brakes, it's far more fun and interesting without them, but they can be reasonably effective.
@InlineDownhillVancouver8 жыл бұрын
***** 60mm is a little too extreme, unless one is learning on an aggressive setup, but that is good advice and I think that 80mm is a good starting point.

Hi Bill, been watching your vids for a while now but finally have a comment/questions worth posting. I notice that when you drag to power stop your dragging foot becomes the front foot in your power stop most of the time. For me on my dominant side, I would drag the left foot yet power stop with the right foot forward. Are you weird, or am I? Or is it to do with the transition from one to the other (which I've admittedly never actually tried)?

He only powerstops on his dominant side, which makes sense. The L stop is not difficult to master on either side, but the powerstop is a much more advanced and difficult stop. It's not true that you need to learn to glide on one foot before learning the "drag" stop. I learned my drag/T-stop way before I was able to glide on one foot comfortably for longer distances. Stopping is easier because you have both feet on the ground to maintain balance. Although admittedly if you do it in bad form, your back knee will suffer.
@InlineDownhillVancouver8 жыл бұрын
I agree. It's not necessary to be able to skate on one foot first, but it is very helpful when one has the muscle conditioning and balance when performing a t-stop.
@HarmonicaMustang8 жыл бұрын
I learned the drag stop before balancing on one foot as well. When I was learning the drag stop, I found myself to be turning towards the leg that is dragging, which meant I had to swap my feet every second or so to keep going in a relatively straight line while stopping. When I began practising rolling on one foot, I found that the better I got the straighter my stops became. Therefore its not a necessity to go on one foot before learning this stop, but it will extend the life of your wheels while you learn and it'll bring more satisfying results quicker.

Wonderful as T stop always made me scared. Not after your video
@InlineDownhillVancouver8 жыл бұрын
Performing a t-stop does not mean that the technique requires forming a T. In fact, the opposite is true, so inferring that those who perform or teach t-stopping are doing so at 90 degrees directly behind the leading skate is misleading. Calling a well established technique by another name also creates confusion among new skaters. You are doing good things for skating, but trying to reinvent the wheel when there is already confusion on these subjects is not a good strategy. I focused on that particular aspect of the video, but there is also some accurate information regarding this technique in the video.
@BillStoppard8 жыл бұрын
I do not embrace, failed and misleading terminology for technique, regardless of antiquity. As inline surges forward again there will be new better terminology emerging from skating leaders like Skate Fresh, Shop Task, and you I hope!
@InlineDownhillVancouver8 жыл бұрын
PintoPonyProductions Based on the decades of established terminology and technique that are and have been used across an entire industry/activity by skaters and instructors, I call the "drag stop" failed and misleading terminology No, I will not be changing the name of established techniques. We struggle enough as it is to get people interested and learning new techniques that people are confused by already. Multiple names for the same thing just further distances people from learning. Clearly, your videos have a positive effect on people's stoke for inline skating, but I think that the effect could be even greater without confusion of terms for existing techniques.
