In order to ease into this stop as a beginner one could do the V stop (like on skiis) while slaloming downhill. As soon as you can carve turns downhill in a V stop position - you can start to lift one leg (the one higher up the hill). That way you will learn how to distribute your weight and get some sliding action. Then you may move to a smooth and even surface, where you can try to transition from a dragging T or L stop to the one legged carving which you have learned before, on the downhill while lifting one leg while sliding on the other. This should bring you to rotations, from which you will probably be able to transition into powerslides, and from there to the Stoppard Power Stops.

Those power stops are pretty tricky to do.....it's kind of easy to do when i begin on a T-stop (Or whatever its called) since the "T-foot" is ready to spin....but i only manage to do on pretty low speed...... Thanks for those videos, they help me a lot.
@Daniel-dj7fh8 жыл бұрын
i gotta learn to go backwards properly before doing the t-stop. but i do some kind of rear slide rotation-stop. like how you do a t-stop, but instead of holding the foot paralell, i let the whole setup spin. it's like a backwards powerstop. can only do it on one side tho haha

Think a lot of people are going to end up turning while learning this stop. For beginners i think a good tip is start slow, don't slide just drive your skates hard into the floor to stop just to get used to the rotating motion. Stopping at higher speeds requires some crazy amount of leaning on the edges to get the skates to slide which is really hard to learn at high speeds.

im really trying to learn this technique! bill can you give advice on movement or drills to practice this stop besides actually having to do it? i think my mind is the biggest obstacle
@Ihateyoufailtube8 жыл бұрын
For some reason most skaters don't seem to emphasize the importance of shoving your heels out. Even in Bill's tutorial he just says to make lots of progressively tighter turns. Personally for me what gets the slide going is the heel shove during the turn. You make a normal tight turn then twist your heels forward, that twisting motion is what makes the slide happen, at least that's how I do it. I would try to practice lots of spin stops, since that motion and body position is pretty similar if you don't want to commit to the powerslide. Or you could just try standing in street shoes in a scissor position and swing your heels while pivoting on your toes, exact same motion is what you need on skates.

whenever I try it I keep going right into a turn- how do you get it to break instead??

This is great stuff, I've been waiting for a video on power stops so huge thanks for making it! Is it possible to do power stops on all kinds of different wheels (big / small diameter, soft / hard stiffness)?
@lazydaze31348 жыл бұрын
Anything above 85a hardness slides like glass on asphalt. I recently started rolling flying eagle supersonic frames with 110mm wheels. The bigger wheels slide easier than my 4 wheel 80mm setup. Probably because more wheel is on the ground during the slide.
@jonatanguitar8 жыл бұрын
+Derek Simmons Yeah that seems logical. I'm currently using 80mm 80A wheels (stock ones that came with the skate) and I haven't yet been able to perform a power stop at all. I won't let it keep me from trying, but sometimes it almost feels too sticky to work. Every time I try it feels like hitting a wall rather than sliding a tiny bit and then stop. My wheela are pretty worn down anyway so I'll have to get new ones soon anyway, but I try to learn as much as I can about different wheels / techniques :)
@jonatanguitar8 жыл бұрын
+Lazy Daze That's cool, how stiff are your 110mm wheels? I've seen quite a few people make the switch from 4x80 to 3x110mm and seemingly enjoying it lately. Being a beginner I never tried it myself but I just have to ask, does tri-skating feel more stable overall due to the big wheels and as you mention larger ground contact or less stable due to that you're higher over the ground?
@lazydaze31348 жыл бұрын
+Jonatan OTW My 110mm are 85a. The 80mm are 87a. For some reason the bigger wheels seem harder though they are supposed to be the softer wheels. On really smooth surfaces They can slip if I push hard on my stride. They are Gyro Valkyrie and the 80mm are flying eagle RX wheels. As far as stability goes I gotta be honest there's not much difference. The supersonic frame is pretty short so your wheelbase is almost the same as a 4 wheel setup. So I can only speak for that particular setup. The bigger wheels have definitely saved me before though. You can roll over stuff that would normally stop you in your tracks with smaller wheels. Probably a little harder to build speed but easier to keep speed once you build it up. Rough roads don't slow you down as bad.
@jonatanguitar8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your suggestion. Yeah, I'm not sure I want to switch to 110mm wheels yet. I like to be able to do quick turns and even some tricks here and there, nothing aggressive but just some fun while cruising, so I think 80mm (or maybe 84mm) is where I'll spend my time in the near future at least. Great idea about trashing the old wheels just to try before replacing them, I like that. One thing I learned just the other day though, was that even if these soft 80A wheels I use are worthless when it comes to sliding (outdoors), they probably work better than harder wheels when it comes to skating in rain. I know it's not great to skate in rain at all, but I did it just yesterday and I was surprised by the fact that I didn't slide much at all to be honest. Maybe one of the few advantages of soft wheels + outdoor skating?

How do you think I can manage to stop with 90mm 83a wheels? I'm finding it near impossible to power stop with these soft wheels. I guess riding them a lot will help, but if I can't power stop then I won't be able to wear them while guaranteeing my safety. Do you have any tips on how I can practice the power stop with 90mm 83a wheels? I have fitness skates.
@Ihateyoufailtube8 жыл бұрын
I'm using 90mm 82a wheels in this gif gfycat.com/MammothLivelyHorseshoebat and I have no trouble powersliding them, I can also powerstop but don't have video. The nice thing about sliding soft wheels is they kind of crumble under you as you can see from the crayon lines left on the pavement. The bad thing is that these wheels were pretty much worn down to 80mm after only a week or so. If you are looking for new wheels get some rollerblade hydrogens, they slide the best imho.
@Mightyfish_8 жыл бұрын
Ihateyoufailtube Oh I see. I just have to tilt my body a lot more since the friction from the soft wheels increase with more weight. That makes more sense. Thank you. I'll keep practicing my powerslide until I'm confident enough to go at higher speeds.

Bill, what are the disadvantages of using a pair of cheap skates from Canadian Tire?
@OctopusWith7Knives8 жыл бұрын
I am not Bill, but still I have some knowledge about it. 1)usually skates from CT have "soft boot" that means you will loose a lot of power on every single push or maneuver, and your foot will spend a lot of your energy just to stabilize yourself, as a result you will feel pain and powerlessness after each skating period. 2)They do not give you same foot support so again, you have to work harder to get into any "trick" or " hard move" 3)Some of the CT "cheapskates" has plastic frames.... I don't even what to talk about it, that is garbage, not even recycling. Is that fair enough?
@harenthiran8 жыл бұрын
+mylorik Thanks for your advice Mylorik☺ This is the advice really wanted now. I wonder why my ankle realy hurts after skating for a while, it because of soft boot! I didn't realize that. I thought soft boot is better and I wouldn't feel no pain. Because of pain I can't skate more than an hour. This is why Bill mostly on hockey skates!? If yes, ok it's time to replace my K2 soft boot skate. Now I'm going to save money for a new one. For this 8 months only my childhood dreams come true, yes I start to learn skating at age of 29 and bought my own skates. Thanks again.

Harenthiran Siva You are very welcome. If you want something for long term, I would recommend you to look into FLYING EAGLE F6 FALCON or SEBA GTX( 200USD) ( they are different in the structure). SEBA FRX is similar to the FLYING EAGLE F6 FALCON but a little bit wider.
