We purchased a comm system in Spring 2019. Wanted voice commands because messing with buttons on the helmet while riding is not something I want to do; also easier for my spouse to deal with. The UClear was my initial choice, but after learning that the motion sensor was only on the top end device, and questioning the unique mic system, we went with the Freecom 4+ and have been very happy. Even riding with earplugs and modular helmets, it is plenty loud, and the sound quality is great. Thanks for another fun and informative review!

This is quite interesting. My driving school in Germany uses Walkie-talkies for communicating with students for Motorcycle lessons. The instructor usually follows behind in car and gives instructions. I always thought it was due to the modular nature and the fact that students can use their own headphone for hygiene. But range seems like a good added benefit

I recently picked up a Freecom 4+ and I gotta say my experience is very good. The JBL speakers really do make a huge difference, with earplugs in they sound fantastic. The automatic volume adjustment based on wind noise is spot on. The voice commands actually work pretty well. @DanBrianGerona

Yup. My motorcycle club has been using them for years. Works way better than any Bluetooth based device when it comes to communication range. And if you can even program some of the baofeng uhf radios to be able to communicate with these Motorola units. Although you need to check with your country's laws if they're legal to use in your area. The advantage is range and has no limits to how many riders can join in.

Awesome video as always. Got a vnet in june, the volume is basically impossible to adjust while riding, and the power-off button is right next to the volume up button and DOESN'T require a long-time press. 50% chance of shutting it off. I found it to be quite loud without earplugs, though with earplugs it might be a little too quiet depending on the type of music or your partner's voice. Also, the intercom only works for two people at a time, you have to switch between "channels"... So basically, it's a 2-person intercom. However, for 115 CAD for a dual pack, it's still worth it imo. Plus you can share it your second unit with whoever it is your riding. If range becomes an issue (never was for me), you can always make a phone call. Sound is great even without a full-face or windshield (riding buddy rides a sportster and wears a Bell Rogue.

Sweet, I use my ham radio (Yaesu VX-6R) with my hand mic clipped to my collar, only downside is if I'm moving with any speed there is too much wind noise. I wonder if putting a sock over it would help? It's modified to work on FRS (Family Radio Service) frequencies (that would be the ones that Motorola and other "bubble pack" walkie talkies you'd buy at walmart or wherever work on) Difference is that I get to use 5 watts out of a huge antenna which means I can talk much more reliably than a stock FRS radio which is limited by a little antenna and only half a watt, but, those still should have plenty of range for a motorcycle group. Bonus of the ham radio is it can also be used to communicate with other hams possibly through repeaters so it can also be useful if I ever need to get ahold of someone in the bush as a bonus I have a long roll up j-pole antenna that I can string up in a tree for even better range.

Acoustician here, the SLM (sound level meter) readings at 04:37 actually seem to show different results. The Uclear at the bottom left is set to "Max", as opposed to what I assume is the average for the others. I would also question if that SLM measures average over time or just an instantaneous response. I wouldn't put too much faith in an SLM like that, useful for indicative ballpark numbers, but I guarantee you they are not accurate to 0.1dB

I got a Sena SMH10R in 2014, installed to a Schuberth C3W and it still works fine. 95% of the use case was just listening to music from my phone combined with GPS directions, but phone calls too were crystal clear up to 90km/h. Below that speed the people on the other end didn't even know I was riding. Only ever used it in paired comms with a buddy a few times, but it synchronized in just a few seconds to his older SMH5 and got a few hundred metres of range which was nice. TL;DR If you're on a tight budget and primarily listen to music, I can recommend a used, older generation Sena

My personal hack for communication is the Sony C200 Bluetooth headphones. They are small enough to fit in your ears and have none of that annoying ANC. They are wired bluetooth, which means that you can put the remote control unit, which has the mic on it, at the front of your helmet and you can even whisper while riding and the voice clarity is hard to beat. I use an AGV K3 SV with a small chin guard at the front and I simply let the remote sit there. If I receive a call or want to play music I just lift the visor a bit and click the button and the voice assistance does the rest. This solution cost me 15 Euro and I cannot be happier 👏

I must apologise to my Interphone Sport comms system. I thought it was rubbish, until Ryan rolled this video. It cost me £125 three years ago. A year ago I had to replace the mic boom as I have a dual sport helmet (25000miles covered!). Up to 60 miles an hour, with the face open on the helmet, I can be on a phone call or chatting with my pillion without any hint on the other side that I'm being blasted in the face by wind, whilst riding my bike. I don't know how good the noise cancellation is above 60mph as that is the limit of me being able to hear people talking to me. My Comms are easy to pair with up to another three mates, but they're all Philistines and refuse to modernise. My Comms also have a built in FM radio, that I use when I'm on the motorway, either on the UK or abroad.

Our group has now upgraded to Cardos Packtalk Slim coming from other Cardo units. The new generation is really good and we are quite happy with it. What I dont understand is that Shoei has locked itself in with Senna. It was previously my go to helmet choice. Now I have to look for a new manufacturer. I dont understand why a helmet company would do such a thing. I can more easily convince myself to buy a new helmet as to convince my whole group to switch headset brands.

I inadvertently beat a few red lights while looking at my phone screen to make sure i wouldn't miss a turn, and decided I didn't want to risk getting T-boned again. I bought a cheap 50 dollar set of bluetooth in-ear pieces (found the smallest sized and lowest profile ones) and they work like a charm. They fit under my helmet perfectly, and also work like ear plugs.

Had the Sena 20s and now I use the Sena 50s. Works for 8 hours and has a standby life of 16, 1-2 hours charge time. As long as you have clear line of sight to other riders the sound quality was great and it stayed connected. 70+mph and wind noise is too much for talking but is fine with music or radio. Only complaint is that if you don't put speakers in your helmet correctly it does hurt your ears after 2 hours of riding.

I use a combination of a cheap china reciever like the BT-S3 (QA is hit or miss) and a adapter cable to a fit a kenwood/baofeng walkie talkie. Twice the hassle and a whole lot cables but you get both the fidelity of the bluetooth and the range of a walkie talkie. Still looking on how to mod a CB to use the system for that ultra long range thou

Cant speak for the other brands, but RyanF9 has never contacted us once to check facts, and he gets several statements plain wrong while also managing to omit key points. Why, because of sales margin. Cardo and Sena give him the highest dealer sales margin so you get pushed by a salesman who admittedly edits together very good videos. If he at least was accurate, or did fact checking, we could respect his opinion. You are being lead based on an internet dealer's pocketbook... a dealer who will soon be shut off from the brand. Cardo and Sena make very good products, no disputing that, but to say UCLEAR is (1:49) "less reputable" or (11:27) "you should avoid it" is bogus. Saying we have the USAFE "motion chip" in the Motion 6, but we lock the feature off unless you pay more (5:53) is also a simply untrue, false, BS assumption. How he got intercom disconnected at (3:34) 270M is suspect, considering we routinely ride connected well beyond double that distance and check with laser range finders. UCLEAR sales grew by large double digits last couple years for a reason, much of this from happy repeat customers. We are continuing to innovate, improve, provide more features for the price, and to take care of any issues our customers experience. Thousands of happy customers, just not according to RyanF9. We're different on purpose, we're proud of what we do, and we love our loyal customers. If you hate the brand that much, RF9, stop selling it, because we're not about to raise your margins.

Was your issue with his testing? Because as far as I can tell, he received your product and received what every other customer would for enclosed information and went from there.. Are you suggesting every single customer need contact you directly to understand and get full use of your product? It’s no secret that Cardo beats everyone, and that Sena is also well liked.. this is not new…there are thousands of unbiased reviews by everyday riders with no brand affiliation. Also Uclear is also sold on FortNine.. which means there’s obviously profit to be made by your sales as well.

@@lady-os1sm I work at a retail store that sells both Cardo and Sena. Senas sell at about a 10 to 1 ratio to Cardos (I'm probably being conservative on that number). And our Cardo case is right next to the register, while the Sena case is across the store against a wall... That being said, we get customers coming in and asking about UClears all the time. Personally my first helmet Bluetooth system was a UClear, that was about 5 years ago. They're good systems and there's a reason they're still in the business.

@@headkicked *Based on your commenting time you should know UClear has changed their comment since my original comment. That was not their comment when I responded to it. That’s great for Sena that they’re succeeding so well at your specific location. I was speaking for overall. Cardo is better received by the general public. I also did state in my original message that Sena was also well received. (And up until a couple years ago better received) As for UClear, obviously they have to do something right or they wouldn’t be on the market and I’m glad to hear you had success with your unit. But it’s also no lie that’s not a shared feeling among ~50% of their customers… just a quick, google/amazon/youtube review search will show you just how split the feeling really is. Which is why it’s up to each customer to do their research before purchasing to decide what unit is best suited to them. People like different things that great, that’s what makes people interesting! That being said my only issue with UClear is this comment. ** Was this comment they have since changed it ** From a business standpoint this comment was inappropriate.. to leave a comment being rude and insulting to a what 25 year old doing his job? Because you didn’t like his opinion? Grow-up. Ryan F9 works for Fortnine, the only large Canadian store to carry all dirtbike /motorcycle/atv ect. gear AND review products this way(In addition to other content). Which incase you don’t realize that’s a huge gift to us. Rocky Mountain and Revzilla and other American companies do a great job of this but when it comes time to order it either doesn’t ship here or costs quite a bit and then you have to worry about getting hit with duties. Having Ryan F9 is a wonderful thing for Canadians, and a brand trying to tarnish his name is immature and uncalled for.

Thanks for the helpful info Ryan! Just to point out that Cardo units are rated at IP67 and are relatively waterproof (backed by the manufacturer) whereas Sena units are not waterproof or water resistant in any way. Sena units come with 'dust covers' for open ports etc but are not suitable for rain! Sena make no mention of any 'weatherproofing of any of its product documentation. I live in Northern England and found out the hard way. Canadian weather riders be warned!

If you want good audio for music, you really need some in-ear goodies. You'll never EVER get good audio quality from in-helmet speakers so long as they're competing with wind noise. I own a pair of Shure SE215's and the sound quality for the road is unparalleled. Well, actually, the only earphones better than Shure SE215's for motorcycle use are the higher-end Shure SE series. They have memory foam tips so they block out just as much sound as dedicated ear plugs, and if you buy the optional in-line microphone, then practicality is on-par with ANY of the aforementioned products. The 215's are a little lacking in low-end ooomph, but if you fork out a bit more and get one of the better SE series then you'll be laughing all the way to timbucktoo and back. Ride safe.
