There's a Battle CD in Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness where you have a Blissey and your opponent has a Medicham. The way you win is by Protecting on the turn that Medicham goes for High Jump Kick (I believe Turn 4, as it'll always use its other moves before High Jump Kick), and just watching it absolutely murder itself in just one shot. Was pretty insane to see how much Medicham did to itself from the recoil without knowing how High Jump Kick worked.

JustsomeguyIdk 80 attack and 100 defense stats that are available as your 4th encounter in union cave are pretty nutty. Also it’s typing allows it to easily take care of the first three gyms or at least be an easy out if someone is in danger, with the exception of Bugsy’s scyther which can and will fuck up your geodude if you aren’t careful.

a few years back on my physical copy of fire red, I wanted to catch all the pokemon in the safari zone. by the first day, I already had all except tauros and chansey. second day and I almost instantly get tauros, but it took me about a week with hours each day, before I finally got chansey, nicknaming it "MY GODESS" for finally getting caught. this was mid-playthrough too. I still had half the gyms left + post-game, so I slapped kangaskhan and chansey on my team and went to work. by the end of the elite four, I realized how perfect of a nickname I had chosen. I will say though, pre gen 4, in vanilla games, a lot of special attacking pokemon carry a physical move like Loreleis lapras and dewgong which have body slam. the immunity to ghost is very valueable for agatha as a pivot, but neither toxic, nor seismic toss can touch her. while blissey at least has SOME sp.atk. chansey really doesn't.

I'm doing a platinum nuzlocke and I was on the fence about banning gyarados. If it was a rare encounter or something it would be justified but the fact karp is available everywhere and evolves at 20 (which is way too early imo) and then factor in dragon rage sweeping half the game AND intimidate..... It's just a bit much. The fact that the encounter is guaranteed I think is what pushes it from S tier to S+ I think I'll ban it

My first nuzlocke was a randomized one, with the rival who kept the starter for the entire run. The starters were chimchar, happiny and another irrelevant pokemon I don't remember. I chose chimchar and let the rival take happiny. Slowbro is insane in GBC Gen 2 too, and is basically guaranteed with Dupes Clause unless you somehow fail Zubat roll in both Dark Cave and Union Cave. When I spammed GSC runs like 10 years ago I started banning Slowbro because of how consistently it overperformed. I specify GBC versions only due to unfamiliarity with HGSS, it's probably still exceptional in the remakes.

we give _SO_ much weight to aggressive options in videogames but when it comes right down to it whoever does the best job of Not Dying wins, period. "kill them first" is an entirely valid way to go about it in a videogame but even in a no-consequences situation it's not always the best way.

@O K heh, I was actually talking about games in general (more specifically general game theory) but pokemon hits on it surprisingly hard for a game that is at least ostensibly made for little kids, in every game after gen1 the status effects and defensive options are far and above the strongest moves in the game. gen1 had some bs going on with your success rates that meant they were basically useless for the player but the strongest options in the game for the opponents. (the odds got squooshed out towards the ends of the bell curve from a set point so if it said it was 70% it really was ~70% but your "95%" was really ~98.5% and your "55%" ended up lookin' a lot more like 20% if you started recording numbers, what's worse is the game was rolling for or against you on a lot of these checks, so a lot of the negative status effects had FAR higher chances of working on you and FAR lower chances of working on the opponent once they were finally applied)

I've never had the pleasure to use a blissey before because I hadn't played fire red past the second gym (gotten bored and frustrated) and I only just got past Lance in Soul Silver (2nd time ever) which was 60 hours that in another game like Platinum It'd be like 40 hours or 30 hours in Emerald. That and chansey is INSANELY low find rate with a 1% in most of the games it's available and in post-game too. But I love Stall-tanks like toxic, spike skarmory. Toxic Spikes Tentacruel. Heck I had a Golurk Snorlax combo in X and a eviolite Dusclops with a Agron in Omega Ruby.

I'm usually really put off from using Gyrados in nuzlockes, or even regular playthroughs because it's flying type isn't put to good use in most generations. Not only can it not learn fly, but it doesnt get any flying type moves at all really. I have to have another flying type for fly for easier gameplay. Gyrados does not even get arial ace. Blissey it's a good Pokémon for an Hardcore run, but's not the best. She doesn't die, but you're gonna use a shit load of PPs for doing something. At least for me, the best Pokémon for an Hardcore challenge is any Pokémon that can reach 1 point above the fastest npc Pokémon and deal enought damage to at least 2-shot anything

I don't know if this is a based take or not, but I honestly think Chansey and Blissey are the worst designed Pokemon in the entire series... from a gameplay perspective. They decided to make Pokemon meant to invalidate just about every single special attacker in the game, but they have so much HP that they also invalidate a majority of physical attackers. Chansey takes so much advantage of Eviolite too, where it's basically guarenteed to live any hit in the game in spite of its base 5 Defense. And if you decide that you just want to deal with them through status, Natural Cure says "no". They're never gonna win you the game, but just their existance is a big strain when teambuilding. And Blissey is also proof that HDB are a braindead item, but whatever. If they were any other type, they would invalidate so many Pokemon.

I'm personally far more likely to play stall in nuzzlockes since I tend to get a defensive core and then utter garbage. In competitive I either run HO weather, Semi-TR, or Balanced Offensive
