So glad to see the sunscreen topic. I have survived ovarian cancer twice, and during the first bout the medical resident told me skin cancer patients are the most difficult to treat as skin cancers are so invasive. The cause of ovarian cancer is unknown--but knowing sunscreen guards against skin cancer--I'll take that any day! Especially in the Colorado sun. Thank you!

Lauren Maslin hi Lauren, just wondering if you could enlighten me on this. Surely when you burn, that is a form of damage to your skin (this causing ageing), regardless of the protection percentage (93,97,98 etc). I feel like people who only focus on the protection percentage ignore that burning is actually damaging and an agent of ageing in itself? This is from an uneducated about skincare pov, purely a common sense one. I know i love the beach, and i need a higher spf. Here in Australia, i don't think higher spf costs more than lower spf anyway, esp spf 30-60.

Most sunscreens in the drugstore are heavy duty sun protective products that can be used at the beach, hiking etc. The focus is on cosmetically elegant sunscreens because they are much harder to find and formulate.

I've been using Biore UV Aqua Creamy Gel (and a few other Japanese sunscreens). I still shop around because I'd like less alcohol in my sunscreen. However, I still fall back to this mainly because it sinks in beautifully and doesn't pill up under makeup. I can't feel it at all once absorbed and, like you mention, that makes me most likely to wear it in a daily basis. Big plus- it costs me only around $10/month.

Thank you for this information. I was trained in modeling school, at the age of 15 or so to NEVER-NEVER expose your face to the sun. I am 75 and have hardly any wrinkles. Back in the day, when I went to the beach, I used Max Factor Pancake make up very heavy on my face and neck. (Now i use something with zinc oxide and a large beam hat). So young ladies/men/Etc. DO NOT GO INTO THE SUN WITHOUT A SUNSCREEN-SUN BLOCK-HAT ETC! Worse than wrinkles, you can get skin cancer. I know a lady who had a tiny skin cancer spot on her nose and turned out to have to remove half of her nose/several reconstruction surgeries later and not a good result!

I use a lot of La Roche Posay products. Love them, I use the retinol night cream and the daily moisturiser with Sunscreen. Love it, also fortunate, way more reasonably priced in France. I tell people all the time to use Sunscreen and they are still out baking and tanning and tell me you are so white! You need a tan! I naturally have an olive skin tone. I am happy with my skin and it looks great compared to those who baked in the sun. The sun is not your friend!

They def. are the "cosmetically pleasing" sunscreens I have been hunting for all my adult life. THANK YOU for recommending the product in a previous video. I do still have to have Casper the ghost face at the beach/pool, but I'm totally ok w/ that. In Europe the UVA rating of a sunscreen is required to be at least one third of the SPF rating. In other words if you opt for an SPF30 European sunscreen, you’re only guaranteed a UVA-PF of 10. It might be more of course, and some products do specify the uva rating separately, but most don’t. This is why I only use SPF50+. It’s excessive in terms of UVB but I feel more confident about the UVA protection which as you stress in this video is just as important.

I use the La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50 Anti-Shine Gel-Cream, the Eucerin Anti-Age Sun Fluid SPF 50, the Clinique Mineral Sunscreen Fluid for face SPF 50, and the Clinque Even Better Dark Spot Defense SPF 50. Body shop factor 50 for face - as an everyday city block under make up - has a bit of a smell but isn’t irritating me, but will try la Roche... Shisedo 50 - for face on holiday. I used to use the bare minerals pressed powder make up with spf on top of shisedo for good stay put make up coverage and to mattify but this product is now different and I haven’t tried its successor. Bare minerals 30 loose powder spf with the medium coverage - to finish off / mattify my make up or over the shisedo product on bare skin. Empty half the product into a clean stiffer and use the stick with inbuilt brush and carry in my bag for on the go to touch up make up and coverage when it’s actually sunny in the UK or on holiday (as you can’t wash the inbuilt brush). Quick and easy to top up spf in the brush form. PitzBuin factor 30 body oil. Rubs in really quickly no horrible white smears. Slight chemical smell but fades fast and I use it in the morning like a body oil so I don’t forget to cover up and it’s easy to top up. I have Asian skin and get sun- glowy in the face (my gorgeous friend that I travelled to Cuba with just didn’t - so annoying) which can be sensitive and tend to burn, hence the high protection and why I have the make-up with spf to keep it going. I also used some heavy duty steroid creams for excema on my face as a child so try to be more conscious now. ... my tan lasts for months rather than weeks regardless of the product.

Tnx for the video! My choice is LRP SEROZINC and after it i apply ANTHELIOS XL gel-creme SPF 50+ for everyday use, even in winters. It helps my extra-oily skin to feel more comfortable (also i started to apply retin-a gel 1% every night after i've watched Dr. Lim video about retinoids, it's greatly help me to control oilness of my skin and much better help to exfoliate my skin comparing AHA, BHA and even LRP LHA acids, and as a result my acne become really rare proplem for me now; unfortunatelly the scars is the last thing that bother me, after 3 lasers and subcision treatment (with also PRP and Melsman) i've seen a very good result, it's about 60-70%, but completely remove it for today is impossible, and rolling scars is really hard to treat...so i'm just waiting for the bright future with scarless wound healing).

Love your videos! Recently stumbled on your channel and cannot stop binge watching. As a former sun worshiper, i have had to make myself get used to using sunscreen as I am now 40. Most of those in the drugstores are pretty horrid - burn eyes, white cast and just terrible under makeup. I have done a long and in-depth research on sunscreens and basically like in Australia, we in the US are just as behind Europe and Asia when it comes to sunscreen because our beloved (cough) FDA considers sunscreen a drug and not a cosmetic product like they do in Europe, so it is very hard and takes many years to get anything g new approved ;(( I have read about and tested quite a few and found some amazing sunscreens, most of which are either Korean or Japanese. They have chemical sunscreens with very stable ingredients (not like avobenzone used in the US :/) which are very elegant, and they have a PA rating system for UVA protection. Here are my favorites: Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Gel sunscreen SPF 50+ PA ++++ (the highest on the Japanese scale) Etude House Sunprise Mild Water light SPF 50+ PA +++ Australian Gold Botanical SPF 50 tinted face lotion- no PA rating but it’s 100% mineral and is beautiful, not thick and disappears on the skin. All these are amazing under foundation, do not sting eyes, dry down within 20 min or less and do not irritate skin at all. They are also pretty cheap, especially if you look on Ebay, Yesstyle and Amazon.

In cosmetics and personal care products, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane is used in the formulation of sun protection products, as well as bath, skin, cleansing, hair, nail and fragrance products. I have been using Blue Lizard Face and Blue Lizard Sport for body. For years. Get it from the company or better drug stores. It is really reasonably priced. Walmart has a form of Blue Lizard with chemicals and cheaper fillers, the real stuff is very basic zinc, titanium, hyaluronic acid and a few other things. The Walmart Blue Lizard Line is not the same. Walgreens on line is the same as ordering from Blue Lizard. There are hospital pharmacies in places like New Mexico where the sun is taxing, and they (like Lovelace Hospital) will only carry Blue Lizard. Not due to price or profit. Due to purity. You won't see ads and marketing for their product, but its been around and pushed by doctors for a long time. All those Octobenzenes, Octocrylenes, Avobenzenes, Helioplex, etc, degrade in 2 hours and let reactive oxygen species free radicals into the dermis. They also will be banned this year in Hawai'i, because they kill reef and sea life. Titanium and Zinc. Forget about cosmetically elegant. Were a big hat and cover up. I've only had a burn once in my life but have been sun exposed through windows in buses for up to 6 hours plus a day. Even if you are brown and do not burn it does not mean you are not going to get a skin cancer a decade later from incidental exposure, and if you are white, you better be covered. My very brown father lost his nose to skin cancer at age 60, and he never went in the sun, just drove to work, and he smoked, which makes it easier to get every cancer known to mankind. You can always buy a tinted BB cream made from zinc and titanium as a base....or mix it with a bit of bronzer gel. Use titanium and zinc, and use environmentally and skin healthy brands.

I've been using the Blue Lizard sunscreen for a while. It does give me a bit of white sheen and greasiness as most Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide sunscreens have those, but a little setting powder can bring them down. It feels comfortable and not drying on the skin. It's really affordable, too! I think it is actually an Australian brand, has Dr. Lim ever heard of it before?

Hello there Dr Lim, I really enjoy your informative & simple advice! I once worked for a dermatologist here in Maine and he would always recommend to use Neutrogena sunscreen with helioplex - he would stress the helioplex.....can you elaborate your thoughts on that one? What is helioplex and the importance behind it?

Hello, I am fair skinned, light coloured eyes , my skin burns very easily, I've had ms for 17+ years so I hate the heat and if I can avoid going out I will, I have BCC on my eyelid, which was removed once, but has come back, in my other eye I have a choroidial nevus which is checked every 10 weeks, surgeons have told me to apply a high factor to my skin, especially my eyelids, so my question is would a children's sunscreen be more suitable? Because I have awful allergies and fear my eyes puffing up like a puffer fish. And ( sorry) as Aussies make the best sun protection everything, any sunglasses you particularly like best? Oakley? Ray ban? Don't know any others, regards sue

I don't give a stuff about how it looks...in the seventies when I was working at pony trekking centres I used coloured zinc sun block all over the place and like I keep telling everyone that is why I am sixty and have no wrinkles! Total sun avoidance!

Isn't it concerning that La Rochey-Posay suncreen has denatured alcohol very high up in the ingredients list as that is very bad for people with skin of colour 😟

Should you stick to factor 30 for your whole holiday (7-10 days) or go down to a factor 15 when you “tan” starts to develop ? Many thanks

Are there particular brands that are more "cosmetically elegant"? I don't currently own any sunscreens so I don't want to spend a lot of money "experimenting". I'm not an outdoors type person. I'm outside because I'm going to my vehicle to go to work, the store, church, etc.. Thank you in advance for your assistance!!

I use Paulas Choice Mineral Sunscreen which is rated an SPF 15 Aus and an SPF 30 in the US. It does leave a white cast and I am of Indian desent but I dont really mind it it sorta absorbs in and I believe the white cast goes away for the most part. I tried using the cetaphil sunscreen and it just really irritated my skin but I don't have any problems with the mineral sunscreens. Living in Aus as serious as our skin cancer issue is people still don't understand or really use sunscreen on daily basis sometimes I think telling people the sun gives you wrinkles makes them more likely to use sunscreen haha

Hi howva - Have you tried Paula's Choice Resist Super-Light Daily Wrinkle Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 30? It is a moisturiser but I use it as a sunscreen. It has a tint which gets rid of the white cast. It uses zinc oxide (at 13% I believe) which I have found is great for my sensitive skin.

Personal experience, spf30 I still burn in no time, spf50 whole day out in the sun, and my skin wouldn’t even start to tan.. so it does matter a lot.

Hi @ Dr Davin Lim, Many Japanese and Korean beauty brands have came up with sunscreens that are watery and targeted for users in warm and humid climate. Are they watered down products, how much product do we need for these kind of consistency? I really like how light they are and the ease of use but I am not sure if they are just diluted products and if they give enough protection? -> Biore, Anessa, Innisfree etc. Would you like to share with us your thoughts on this? :D
