Wonderful video. As someone that has recently had 3 moles removed and 2 for biopsies it was a very scary experience. I think the importance of sunscreen is one of the most important things we can do for our faces daily. Its estimated that we need 1.3ml of product (sunscreen) so using just an SPF foundation as a protective measure would mean you would go through a standard 30ml bottle before the mouth is out. Its also a HUGE amount of product on ones face. Personally speaking i cover up with SPF30-50 daily (mineral based as the chemical ones make my face burn), face, neck, chest hands etc... this experience has really taught me the importance of not just using it to look younger, but for the sake of your skins health. Again, wonderful video Lisa.

If people can get their hands on Japanese sunscreen, I recommend them the most! Allie, Biore, Nivea and some other brands are amazing. Sunscreens are so in demand in Japan that they're constantly updating their formulations to beat the competition. The textures and protection are the best and they make a bunch for different needs. Mattifying ones, moisturizing/dewy ones, outdoor, indoor, and most will not leave the skin ashy. They're also very cheap! Even the compact and loose powder ones. One thing that amazes me is how almost all of them are SPF 50+ PA++++, including powder ones without being chalky while still being around $10 a pop. And I'm extremely grateful that Japanese sunscreens have government regulated UVA rating (the PA thing).
@LittleAmyHe9 жыл бұрын
Oh and if you think Shiseido sunscreen is good (and I do like it), the ones you get at drugstores in Japan is even better. I guess it has something to do with the USA restriction thing, but I've heard from sunscreen fiends that the formulation in Japan doesn't feel that great either compared to many others. This site is a great resource for Japanese sunscreen: www.ratzillacosme.com/reviews/my-top-5-spf50-japanese-sunscreens-for-2015/ And if you need a package forwarding service, I really like Tenso. If you're not shipping to your address for the first order, you can also ask them to ship a postcard with a confirmation code. All Japanese forwarding companies need to confirm your address first.

What frustrates me in particular is that companies almost never state the UVA (PPD) coverage protection on their product. A SPF can say broad spectrum on the box but you as a consumer still have no grasp of how high the exact PPD value is, which is very important to know (it has to be high e.g 30 and up). Also most people don't even apply nearly enough SPF so the vitamin d issue is no big deal and you can easily incorporate a vitamin d supplement into your diet. Thank for this video and making people aware of daily SPF usage, dear Lisa! :)
@dsmgl9 жыл бұрын
I always wonder why people worry about vitamin D - as if their face and neck are the only areas capable of producing it! Sun rays go through most clothing, and most don't wear sunscreen on their whole body - so there is lots of skin exposed to the sun to get enough vitamin D! PS: Love your channel!
@geekNchic9 жыл бұрын
+dsmgl Exactly! And there a still way too many people propagating this vitamin d issue like there's no tomorrow while still most people not even using enough SPF and thinking foundation / make up is plenty to be thoroughly protected against UV rays. Oh well, reading some comments here, there are too many misconceptions about sun protection out. Hopefully that'll change in the future! I'm super happy you do, thanks! :)
@MiZzThANGz219 жыл бұрын
dsmgl i have learned recently (after finding out I had low vitamin D levels) that the body needs to be bare skin in order for it to produce vitamin D from the sun. Wearing clothes doesnt accomplish this. It has to be direct sun to bare skin.
@rachellawrence34159 жыл бұрын
***** Thats correct I stay out of the sun and as a result my vitamin D levels were found to be too low after a routine blood test. My doctor said I need about 20 minutes a day of sunlight on my arms with out sun screen that is enough to get you required Vit D most people in the UK are deficient in vitamin D and the summer time is naturally the time to top up on vit d you do not get enough vit d via diet it has to be sunlight that advice comes from an excellent doctor

Super random comment, but ladies, putting sunblock on your hands is actually pretty beneficial too! I know hands don't seem like such an important thing when compared to your face, but you can REALLY tell the age of someone by their hands (i.e. sun damage, wrinkles, age spots, etc), whereas nowadays there are so many makeup products/skincare products aimed towards keeping the face + neck looking youthful (but obviously facial spf is a must still!)

I'm darker complexion and did outdoor sports for years when I was in high school through university. We weren't as knowledgeable about sunscreens back then and only the burning aspect was emphasized. As I never burn I failed to see the point of using it like my lighter skin teammates did. (Back then it was all about the thick NoAd for us.) On my longest days competing out in the sun my face would feel "leathery", and I wrongly figured it was just dehydration. (I had no idea!) Years later I can totally tell now how years of this abuse has affected my skin. On a positive note, I think that my having very oily skin has somewhat helped with countering the extent of the wrinkles, although my skin texture and coloring has still suffered. So even if you are young and on the darker side, WHERE THE SUNSCREEN! EVERYDAY. Thankfully the sunscreens today have advanced so much, and there's lots of great options. I wish I knew then what I know now.

I've always used a particular Japanese sunscreen that felt like a serum, but just as I was watching this video I tried to repurchase it and it was discontinued. Thankfully you offered a good brand recommendation who makes one that looks like it will be a perfect replacement. Thank you Lisa! Sunscreen often contains fragrance, which can irritate the skin and leave people thinking they are too sensitive to use it on their faces, so my tip is to look for one that doesn't contain fragrance and has a dewy/moisturizing texture (both the "milky" and mineral sunscreens always dry me out and don't absorb as thoroughly as the moisturizing "serum" type!) If you try a sunscreen and hate it, try again. There are so many variations that are all held to the same sun-protection standards; inevitably one will work better than the others.

Thank you for this, Lisa. For most non-Caucasians choosing a sunscreen is very tricky as most sunscreens have a white tinge and are greasy. The mattifying sun screens give an even stronger white /greyish tint when applied. The one that works for my dark olive skin is Eucerin SPF30 Mattifying Face Sun Fluid. It's neither white nor greasy and protects from both UVA and UVB.

Heba Youssef I'm Asian, have very oily skin and prefer mineral-based sunscreen as most of the chemical sunscreen ingredients are oily by nature and can also make my skin and eyes burn. The best I've found is Paula's Choice Resist Super-Light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30 which is (13%) zinc-oxide based and is tinted, so no whitish cast. The zinc oxide makes it very mattifying and can even accentuate dry areas, so some caution needs to be used in that regard.

This video is amazing! So much time and research has gone into it, well done :) Just as an aside, Australia's regulatory body the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) updated the guidelines for sunscreen in Australia. Since 2012 the baseline has been SPF 50+ and with that comes vey strict restrictions on packaging and how you can advertise the product (now labelling things like "sweat resistant" are considered misleading). Since we are about 3 metres from the sun and have incredibly high exposure to UVA and UVB the authorities decided that SPF 50 is the best protection. That isn't to say SPF 30 isn't also available, but it's not as recommended. Also, just because you have sunscreen on doesn't mean you've protected yourself in a fail safe way. All Aussie kids have been trained or conditioned to "slip slop slap" since the 80s - slip on a top, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat. Hats especially provide a clear and effective barrier and also slow the inevitable dehydration that comes with sitting in the sun for an afternoon. Hope that helps Aussies around here :) we're constantly battling the elements during summer so I thought I'd mention the differences. There's more information here if you're interested www.standards.org.au/OurOrganisation/News/Pages/Australian%20Standard%20for%20SPF%2050+%20Sunscreen.aspx (it's a link to a PDF file). I think that more attention should be put on the ingredients in sunscreen. I don't want to sound like a downer, but the problem with sunscreen is that it is extremely toxic and polluting to oceans and marine life, such as degrading coral reefs. When millions of people run down to the beach, that's thousands of tons of product swimming in the sea, essentially harming the beach. More care should be taken to how we consume our products, and which is more important between looking young and our impact on the environment. I still love your work though Lisa!

I believe the problem for the environment is physical sunscreens. I haven't heard of mineral sunscreens having a damaging impact. They are also much safer to use for the body as they do not contain nano particles, which can enter the bloodstream.

stephanie sprinkle At the risk of sounding rude... it sounds like you don't know enough about the topic to develop an informed opinion. The problem here is that the hazardous chemicals don't spread out evenly across the entire ocean-they stay concentrated in coastal regions, especially heavily populated or tourist-y areas. Coral reefs in those places play a huge role in filtering and maintaining water quality. Studies strongly suggest that octionxate and oxybenzone contribute to their destruction along with other marine life. Even if you're convinced that human lives are inherently more valuable than others, please realize that our health, our quality of life, and our very existence is made possible by the ecosystems we live in. When critical parts of those ecosystems are damaged, the potential for suffering and death is far, far greater. Besides, there are less harmful sunscreens out there to protect us from skin cancer. To my knowledge, non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide have the least negative impact on the environment.

This was so great to watch! The UV rays in Australia are CRAZY high because we don't have an ozone layer. It's ridiculous. As soon as you are in the sun, you can feel the burn. At the moment I'm using Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 30+, and it protects against UVB & UVA. I'm really liking it so far, I've only been using it for the past week, but it's got pretty much zero oily finish to it. x

I know as I have done a lot of research on them during grad school as a pharmacologist. not every formula/ molecule new under the sun is safe in the long run. the FDA is in constant touch with the EU's regulatory body on studies and adverse events of sunscreen use. the point is that some like PABA are great for short term use and extremely toxic even mutagenic or carcinogenic over the long haul!!!

Great video but when do you apply sunscreen? You must wear sunscreen everyday but I don't think I've ever seen you apply a sunscreen in your makeup videos. Do you apply it as your primer? Please make a makeup tutorial video that incorporates your sunscreen regimen. Thank you!

+Laura Neuzeth Chemical sunscreens need to be applied directly to bare skin because they work by a chemical reaction of bonding with the skin. Physical/mineral ones can be applied after moisturiser. Wow, im very impressed with this video. It so well thought. Since over 4 years Im using SPF 50 daily as I was living in Morocco and now in South France and have pale skin I thought it will be the best for me. My skin became more and more sensitive and I never had problematic skin before, even as a teenager. Im so going to the pharmacy tommorow to get Avene sunscreen. Thank you so much for your hard work researching it all for us. I feel privilaged to be able to get such a valuable information from your channel. Also you are your best advertisement, seems like you dont have a single wrinkle on your face.

Hello Lisa, I live in France and don't know if this product is available in the UK, but still it's the Bioderma Hydrabio moisturizing anti-UV mist. The mist is so thin you don't have to spread it with your fingers, so it doesn't ruin your make up. it's spf 30. 3 or 4 spray are enough for the whole face. You need to shake it well before using it. I really like it. And I think it's espacially interesting for men because many don't like to wear cream, and this is like water. (there is some oil in it, that's why you need to shake it well) .It feels just like water ont the skin. So you can protect your man, and he doesn't complain. lol I think I remember you like the brand Bioderma, and this is actually very new, it came out this year. Thank you for this very complete and interesting video. Have a lovely day. Rose

Here in Canada we get all the products you mentioned that are sold in the UK. Shoppers Drug Mart is especially useful for purchasing cosmetics from the UK and France. I have been using La Roche Posay for a few years now and couldn't be happier with the brand! Went to Hawaii and got 0 sunburn or tan, despite being on the white side. One thing I wanted to ask because I get mixed answers - does La Roche Posay test on animals? Since they are owned by Loreal, who used to or still does test on animals, does that apply to the company? Thank you.

I live in Canada and Avene and La Roche Posey are always the #1 choice of sunscreens bc we in Canada abide by the European sunscreen guidelines. The new "thing" now that we are seeing is the circle around the UVA which indicates that is approved as a full UVA block, Apparently Europe has had this for quite some time. I have been using Avene forever and I'm finally so happy someone in the cosmetic you tube world has mentioned how amazing the product is. Your awesome and I love your videos and your knowledge. your one of a kind!

Lisa Eldridge Very informative, Thank you very much. I'm interested in the SkinCeuticals UV Defense you mentioned. I know you said it doesn't leave a white cast but does that apply to black skin as sometimes ones that say they don't still show up on us. Thank you.

Skinceuticals makes a tinted version called Physical Fusion SPF 50. I'm pretty tan and this one doesn't leave a white cast at all. It's like the color of NW30. If you wear foundation though it will cover the ashy-ness that a physical sunscreen may leave behind. Hope this helps.

I have to tell you, your videos are my go-to place for skincare and beauty advice. I have tried a number of recommended products, including Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant and Glo Therapeutics Hydrating Gel Cleanser. I adore them both! I have been anguishing over finding a safe and effective sunscreen this year. With the recent exposure of Oxybenzone as the biggest offender and ingredient in American sunscreens I have been searching high and low for something both my son and I can use. I have just ordered Avène Hydrance Optimale SPF 20 (thank God for Amazon!!!) and am very excited to see how it works. While mineral sunscreens are all very well and good, I find they are difficult to apply (especially on children!) and don't have a lot of staying power without continually reapplying. This video was super helpful!! Thank you again for wonderful guidance:) xo

For a all over body sun block, there is a brand in Australia called Banana Boat - spf30 - 50 and my family and I have been using it for years and we haven't had a burn yet. The sport and waterproof ones are not suitable for the face - far too greasy - but it also means there's no dry skin on me in summer! Also, thank you for the reminder that mineral powder makeup is a sun block in it's own right - you've saved me the cost of buying the Peter Thomas Roth powdered sun block!

I am pretty serious about sunscreen, as a 38 year old woman who has had multiple carcinomas (skin cancer) removed. I use a daily sunscreen (Elta MD), and for my mid-day touch ups, I also use Brush On Block. I used the Peter Thomas Roth one years ago but they changed the pigment in it last year and it's too orange now. Brush On Block is very neutral! I even use it on my kids.

You recommended several US sunscreens for sensitive skin that contain Avobenzone... that chemical is a NO NO for sensitive skin! It BURNSSS! Does the EU ingredients Triazone/Triazine burn us sensitives like Avobenzone? Also, that Kose one you rec'd is HIGHLY fragranced. I do wear it on beach days because it does work, but I will not be repurchasing because of all the skin irritants it contains.

Thank's for this great informative video on sunscreens Lisa. I'm one of those people who don't tan much-super pale Irish skin and I'm a full time horticulture student so obviously I work outside a lot in all weathers. Trying to protect it in boiling 35 C heat in polytunnels in summer is a real challenge. I like to wear a little Josie Maran tinted moisturiser spf 30 just as a base so I have to find a separate high spf (50 in summer) mineral sunscreen as it's impractical to stop work every 2 hours to take off the JM then reapply a chemical one then put the JM on top again. So I think for people like me who work outdoors a mineral one is best-works straight away on application, much longer lasting than chemical ones so long as it's not rubbed off, plays nicely on top of my JM, no chemicals that irritate my skin, and zinc oxide has all sorts of skin benefits-tightens pores, reduces blackheads forming, heals scars and so on. Still searching for my HG mineral spf 50 for summer but I'll check out the SkinsCeuticals one.

I did a very similar video just giving some information about applying sunscreen because it's so important to me but you really give so much detail and info in regards to US vs. Europe. I live in the US so unfortunately I'm on the worser side of things, but I hope the US can eventually follow the lead of EU sunscreens and sun care. Absolutely loved this video and the information and detail you put into it.

Excellent video and very good and accurate advice. As someone who has very oily skin and cannot stand anything greasy, I prefer mineral sunscreens as the active sunscreen chemical ingredients are oily in texture by nature. Plus, some of the chemical ingredients can sting the eyes and I've also experienced skin irritation with some of them. My current favorite is Paula's Choice Resist Super Light Daily Wrinkle Defense SPF 30 which is zinc oxide-based, is tinted, so no whitish cast, and is very mattifying. It is so mattifying that it can accentuate any dry patches I have, so I have to take care to moisturize beforehand, but otherwise, it's perfect. I am never without it and always stock up during sales.

Great video,thank you for doing an update! I have very fair,sensitive skin and live in a very warm,humid climate. I was so pleased to see that my local Walgreen's was carrying the LaRoche Posay line of sunscreens! I am currently loving IT Cosmetics CC+50 Creme from Ulta Beauty. While it does claim to have an SPF 50, a TINY (and I'm talking TINY) bit of the product on a foundation brush goes a long,long way. You can also layer the coverage until your satisfied. Check with your local Ulta,right now I think you can still ask for a sample of IT Cosmetics CC 50+ for free with ANY purchase! If they don't,just ask someone to demo the product so you try it!

What to apply first a sunscreen or a moisturizer?
@anitadiaz7339 жыл бұрын
mosturizer, let it dry a minute or two, you can press a kleenex to take off the excess, then the sunscreen. and it depends of your skin type and behaviour wich textures you should preffer. nowadays there are many textures and make up even powder with sunscreen

+Anita Diaz you're the only one who suggested a moisturizer first haha most say sunscreen goes first. What I do now is mix few drops of sunscreen & moisturizer and apply them at once.
@quynhanhnguyen14979 жыл бұрын
+Bibi Blue You always apply your moisturizer first and then sunscreen. I have never heard of anyone suggest to apply sunscreen first. Sunscreens are supposed to set layer of protection on your skin, so if you apply sunscreen first then the moisturizer that is applied later can't get through the sunscreen layer and therefore can't moisturize, literally it's like you don't put any moisturizer at all
@anitadiaz7339 жыл бұрын
