Are you using E-Front Curtain Shutter? Any issues you run into? And...anyone get all five right? 😲

I now stay very very far away from EFCS for wildlife. I had great shots - or so I thought. The wings of the Egret and of the Great Blue Heron that was chasing it were smeared at 1/1600 of a second with a X-T3. Smeared not blurred. I will never use EFCS for wildlife after that happened. From what I understand ES is good for landscape. When I know that I don't need 1/1000 of a second or faster then I thoroughly enjoy using EFCS especially on the X-H1. Another place I like using ES is for focus bracketing macro shots.
@pal2tech
@pal2tech 4 жыл бұрын
@@Martin-nu6ym Hey Martin!!! DANG I totally forgot to emphasize using ES for focus bracketing!!! Oh well, you are so right about that. And yeah, I'd stay away from EFCS for wildlife, especially in cases where they are far away enough not to be scared by the shutter noise. Thanks so much for letting me know your thoughts and keep in touch!!!

@@Martin-nu6ym You wrote ES would be great for landscape. But I thought that ES is limited towards long exposure. How about that? How low can I set the exposure time with ES? I do long exposures for milky way shots (with MS) and now want to shoot a time-lapse. ES would be perfect since there would be lots of pictures to be taken without wearing down the shutter curtain.

Hi Chris! I have been commenting on your channel for quite sometime and this is again an opportunity to say thank you for your support. I 'shoot' sports with the XT-3 and have been struggling (really) for the sharpness of some photos. keeper rate way below 'acceptable'. Sports as windsurfing , kitesurfing are quite hard has we are in blowing winds over 25knots with xf100-400, so camera shake is an issue of concern. This is to say that I improved a lot since we started to exchange information and have moved from MS to ES with no distortion. Sharpness finally came in and some confidence as well. Shooting between 1\1000 and 1\1600 (pictures and metadata available if needed) Interesting points regarding BIF as the requirements (think) are similar to sports involving high SS to freeze the moment. Sure that I will give a go to ES (Front curtain). By the way this is just a personal issue. Love the sound of the MS, but that ES... Am I alone on this issue? :-))) Cheers

@juanpablorevert 3 жыл бұрын
@@pixelgenau2982 I do long exposures for the Milky Way with ES with really great results. I use the XF23 1.4, with 10", f/1.4, ISO 1250 or 1600 exposures, in quite dark skies, of course.

This is the second or third time of watching this as I’m new(ish) to Fuji at only 2 years and I have struggled with sharpness with it really, to the point I wanted to change systems but due to financial constraints that’s just not possible at the minute. I hear so many great things about Fuji and really want to learn more, I’m invested heavily financially in the system now ( for my circumstances and nowhere near a pro level type of investment ) so actually NEED to learn more. I’ve watched so many channels to try and learn things yet none have come anywhere near to your level Chris, you go into detail on each and every subject you wish to talk about rather than talking about 3/4 different ones in one video and though most goes way over my head I do get to learn some things in detail. Rather than telling people you need to do this or do that you explain why we need to do it or giving other options if available. Thank You❗️

I found out about electronic shutter distortion the day I went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed here in the UK. I was taking panning shots of cars going up the 'hill' and on review I saw to my horror that while the cars were nice and sharp the background was all leaning over and distorted. Lesson learnt!

Hey Chris, it's always a pleasure to watch your videos. It's incredible the depth in which you explain things. Your expertise is sensational, but it is only fantastic because you can pass on your knowledge so that an interested layman like me can understand everything. Great review! If I want wide open aperture in daylight e.g. for weddings or portraiture, I use the combined mechanical/ES. This uses mechanical for shutter speeds up to 4,000 then automatically uses ES for high shutter speeds on very bright days. I don’t have to think. I never understood ESFront curtain. But thanks to your (excellent) review I shall use the combined mechanical/esf which will allow flash at all speeds. During wedding shoots I don’t use flash until night time -then I switch to manual shutter speed on pure mechanical. But following your review I shall experiment with leaving it on mechanical/esf setting all the time. GREAT review.

I will advocate for electronic shutter as a default and then changing to mechanical when needed. That’s what I do and I think I ran into light banding issues maybe two or three times in a year. You have to be shooting at fast shutter speeds indoors for it to be an issue, and that’s often not the case for me. I do understand some people are attached to the aesthetics of the mechanical shutter noise though. Personally I prefer a completely silent shutter that sets my subjects more at ease. To each his or her own.

LOL, there's another that didn't quite make in there. I was pissed because my kids were thumping on the floor above and the Rode mic was picking up EVERYTHING. Maybe all save that one for a best of bloopers reel one day. I'll tell you these mics just pick up stuff you'd never imagine. I sit and watch the waveform in Audacity as it jumps up with each foot thomp above me!

@@pal2tech it's easy: in a Fujifilm Facebook group a member asked "What shutter should I use....? I am confused" - so I posted a link to your video here. If he is interested in watching, solving his problem, he has to wait ... until the 'hard facts', the instructional part begins. The intro does not help ;-)

@@pal2tech I also did not appreciate the unrelated segment at the start of the video, but since there is only one comment mentioning it I'll assume that others didn't mind. To keep everyone happy perhaps you could either move it to the end (and just mention it at the start), or put a timestamp on screen for when the main content starts. In terms of the main content, very well done (although I would have liked to know why those limitations apply to the electronic shutter, e.g. no flash).

Such a helpful video! Just curious, which would you recommend for bird photography with the fujinon 100-400? Although it's not a prime, when you're fully zoomed in to 400 mm and shooting around 1/1000, I wonder whether the EFC would turn out. I guess I'll have to try it...

LOL, ok, for the intro I used the 23mm prime at f/2. It really has that nice shallow almost full-frame look for video. I did eye tracking for the video since I wasn't able to be behind the camera pulling focus. It's a great lens!

My X-T3 is set E mode when I use it for macro. Especially “static” object only for outdoor conditions. Flying insects or indoor condition, I prefer to use mechanical mode. If the luminosity is too high E mode helps a lot to avoid ND filter for outdoor macros. Sometimes I use E mode if I photograph outdoor portraits in a sunny day. Unfortunately I could not find an economic friendly ND filter that satisfies my expectations. So, E shutter mode bridges the high luminosité with f1.2.
@pal2tech
@pal2tech 4 жыл бұрын
YES, exactly. What's crazy is that you can use it for those high shutter speeds to avoid the ND filters --- but of course the higher the shutter speed, the more careful you need to be to avoid issues like rolling shutter or background exposure consistency. And, yeah, ND filters can be WAAAYYY overpriced!!!! You've got the perfect situation though where I'd definitely recommend E mode. And great to see ya again Laszlo!!!!
