Never again would the world see a knight as formidable as sir Barristan Selmy". in the show: "AAAAH HELP ME GREY WORM, THEY HAVE DAGGERS AND MASKS :*C"

I think the show was generous with Barristan Selmy. Yes, he was one of the greatest swordsmen ever, but at this point in the timeline, he's nearly 80. Realistically, an 80 year old probably wouldn't be able to even pick up a sword so making him as effective as he was a stretch.
@BosesBjorn
@BosesBjorn 8 жыл бұрын
Barristan would have been about 64 in the books and fighting in the kingsguard since he has been 23. Now a fit 64 year old would still get worn out more easily yes, but he would still be a formidable fighter.

The reason why Jorah is the best (HEMA wise) is because the actor iain glen actually trains in fencing and does some HEMA fighting. Hence the good technique and footwork

Vandy Sagina That whole fight was bullshit though. I try to forget it ever occurred. The Head of State's head bodyguard shows up to work without armor in the middle of a civil war? A group of Hoplite soldiers break formation, scatter and charge at their enemies, without checking their backs? A small group of guerillas (Who judging by their costumes are nobility) are able to overpower a group of warriors who were previously established as the best in the world with small knives and no armor?

DoctorWeeTodd Yea they got really slack under Dany. I don't think they ever were best in the world though. Thats just a marketing strategy to get them sold, think about it. Barristan might have been decent in his golden days. But after he was retired by Joffrey he just ran of after Dany so he could get a soldiers death really.

@TylerAlbers01 8 жыл бұрын
You said, "so it's more of a who choreographed the better fight scenes than who is the better swordsman." By saying that, it is obvious that you assumed that the title of "best swordsman" was being applied to the actors. This is the only way your comment makes sense. You thought the video was judging which actor was the best swordsman, and you brought up the point that the show is fake, therefore we aren't judging the actors, we are actually judging the choreography. You're logic here is on point. The fault in your comment is the fact that the video was never judging the actors, making your "it's not the swordsmanship, its the choreography" argument pointless. When the video was judging who the best "swordsman" was, they were judging the fake characters, and the fake fighting that those characters used. In other words, the video was ALREADY judging the choreography. In this context, your comment is trivial.
@rei_cirith
@rei_cirith 8 жыл бұрын
Tyler Albers Regardless, the characters are portrayed by the actors, so how good the actors are performing would equate to how good the characters are. I mean, it's fake fighting, it's obviously not realistic. He's judging them in terms of how effective the fight style would be in real life when this is not real life. The aim of real-life sword fights is to hurt the opponent, and these are choreographed to look cool whilst not getting anyone hurt. The whole point of this video makes no sense.

You know what... Realistic swordsmanship looks far more promising in terms of cinematic appeal; because an obviously good swordsman on screen would show much more fluidity and technique and the fights would be more natural to watch. There would be kills that could happen so fast in these scenarios that instead of drawn out "let's play helicopter" with our "swords" it would have more of a jaw dropping effect. And I don't know why movie directors hate shields. Fuck you, shields are amazing. Also half-swording looks so fucking badass, and the legendary murder-stroke is phenomenal to watch.
@Outland9000
@Outland9000 8 жыл бұрын
But, if your wearing full plate armor why would you also carry a shield? Did this actually happen in medieval times?
@benevolentworldexploder5395
@benevolentworldexploder5395 8 жыл бұрын
tomcornwall83 Some people couldn't afford plate. Shields are affordable protection with a great deal of strategic implementation as well. And yes, carrying shields did happen quite a bit. A shield is just as much a weapon as it is a defense, and let's not forget that many weapons were developed for the destruction of plate mail. There is actually a full hour English documentary on the evolution of armor and weapons, and compares the war between Britain and France as a powder keg for what they loving refer to as "An arms race". What is dumb is that these fights never implement maces or warhammers, the common antithesis to plate.
@Outland9000
@Outland9000 8 жыл бұрын
Damon Olsen What I mean is would someone wearing full plate armor ALSO carry a shield?
@benevolentworldexploder5395
@benevolentworldexploder5395 8 жыл бұрын
tomcornwall83 How about I pose this in question that at first seems like it's some brainwork, but is more rhetorical than you may first realize. Go to your garage and take a sledgehammer with you. Hit steel with it. Now take that sledgehammer and hit a tree with it. Does that answer your question? Metal is highly malliable. All it takes is the right tool to either hammer it in or wedge a hole in it. Many weapons were designed to destroy armored opponents. There are wedge-like daggers designed to finish fallen opponents who are in plate. The murder-stroke is a commonly practiced technique for swordsmen to dispatch armored foes, favoring the hilt as a weapon while half-swording the blade in your hands instead. Maces, Warhammers; each designed for the purpose of death to armored foes. When any defense is developed, there is a shift to build offensive weapons to take it out. But shields are a whole other beast. Simple choices like making the material out sturdy wood can take away the impact of a mace, and the design of a shield can relate to it's uses as well. The choice between wood and metal is a significant one. Wood can be cut, but hitting it with a wedge disables your weapon if you can't draw it out and hitting a shield with your hammer can be unproductive, instead providing an opening for your opponent. Bucklers may seem stupid and small, but they are amazing in their uses on the battlefield, this is because of the size and the shape. Shields were not made obsolete from plate, they were reinvented in ways to deal with this ever-changing arms race... and also kite shields are specifically designed for horseback. If you've never seen depictions of fully plated knights on horses using kite shields... then I think you should probably reevaluate this discussion entirely.
@Outland9000
@Outland9000 8 жыл бұрын
Damon Olsen So basically, yes. Someone wearing full plate might also use a shield. Thanks for the reply even if it did come across as a little condescending.

Robert R Well it is a show, it just would not be interesting to watch how Bronn hits he`s opponent like 20 times in the hand, instead we have a smart character, who avoids direct battle with stronger fighter, makes him tired from moving in heavy equipment, and then finishes him in one move. On the place of Bronn i would do the same.

For almost everyone that he took into account, he didn't have enough footage. So why make a video? This whole video looks stupid. Even I don't want to see crazy spinning stuff, but criticising the choreography isn't helping anyone right? If this guy was that good, then why isn't he choreographing for GOT? GOT producers sure have enough money to give to this guy. At the end, saying Ser Jorah was the best because he found footage that showed he was good?
@WreckNRepeat
@WreckNRepeat 8 жыл бұрын
Saikat Kar Fight choreographers don't usually aim for realism. The GoT producers are well aware that they can hire people who know a lot about historical sword fighting techniques, but they choose not to because they want their fights to be more cinematic and exciting. And I don't think the guy who made this vid is criticizing them for that. I think he's just having a bit of fun by pointing it out.

WreckNRepeat I found the video more negative than it was funny. They tend to do more cinematic and exciting stuff probably because that's what the viewer wants. The actors have learned quite a bit of Sword fighting for their roles. They aren't perfect, the choreographers aren't perfect, but at the end the scenes are decent to good. Whats the point in pointing out that the sword had slipped beyond the gauntlet or something? Every classic movie also has some faults. He could have displayed it in a more fun way.

Unfortunately, there's Stage Fighting, and then there's bad choreography. The Kings Landing fights all have pretty poor fight choreography, but if you compare it to the scenes in the North and the scenes in Meereen, the fights are much more entertaining to watch than Ned vs Jaime.

thekillers1stfan what?where not talking in their history here and I'm only going off of what the guy who made the video said in the video. In THE SHOW that we are watching on HBO jon has seen probably the most action and it's really not even close. Jon fought or killed - He fought and killed the white that was trying to kill the Lord commander in his chamber Jon fought and killed that knights watchman to gain the wildlings trust. Jon then deserted the wildlings killing a couple of them while fighting and also killed the warg before running off on his horse. Jon then led the mission to kasters keep to try and bring justice to the Lord commander after his own men killed him and jon went head up with the knife wielding former nights watchman and killed him (with gillys help lol) Jon then took command of the wall when the wildlings attacked and even went down to lead the fight vs the thins and wildlings got over the other side of the wall and after killing several wildlings he went toe to toe with the leader of the wildlings and killed him with a hammer to his head. Then jon again fought in another battle at hardhome against the whites and white walkers and after killing several whites he went toe to toe with a WHITE WALKER and killed him in one on one combat basically. Then jon fought in this last battle in the battle of bastards and unlike Ramsey john led the attack and was prepared to take on an entire army by himself ,oh yea and then went and killed the leader of that army in Ramsey in one on one combat. Oh yea it's not a fight but he was shakes 47 lol times by his own brothers and went to the after life and was BROUGHT back to life..That's just off the top of my head and thinking about it now,jon snow has definitely seen the most action and has all the experience in the world for what he went through lol

There are HEMA techniques that *do* directly attack a weapon. Many of the masterstrikes are offline cuts that both parry and strike in the same blow, and there are krumphau and other suppressing techniques for opening a line for a short edge strike to the head, or zornort, which uses a cut to suppress and then follows with a wind and thrust to cover the line and attack.

I just wanted someone to explain one single thing: how come Jaimie Lannister, a so skillful and dedicated swordsman, never thought on reinforcing his *left hand*? How come never occurred to him, or his instructors, that both hands must be at least competent, even if not equally skilled?
@KnightSquire
@KnightSquire 7 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, Jamie Lannister is a prime example of hype in the game of thrones world, just like in our own world things get exaggerated and blown out of proportion. From what I can gather Jamie holds very few war time accomplishments, leaving most of his abilities to be rated on the tournament grounds... I'm not saying he isn't an accomplished swordsman simply that you cannot trust one characters opinion over any others. With that in mind, Jamie is a wealthy man, clearly arrogant, he fought mainly in the safety of tournaments and his most notable feat was stabbing an unarmed man in the back. So to answer your question, (in my opinion) he probably never, ever, EVER saw any real chance of being hurt so badly... he probably believes his own hype. Plus you can practice writing with your left hand, but you will probably still suck at it by comparison to your right. XD

Spoilers I think his main focus is people alive in the series (hence why he brushed over Ned). Syrio's apparent death wouldn't land him on this list. That being said, his footwork is fairly well done, if I remember correctly, he does telegraph some (pulling back the sword before striking), but overall I think his technique was pretty well done.

I dunno, the foot soldiers were just grunts, it's conceivable that Syrio could have manhandled them the way he did. When he faces off against Meryn Trant his wooden sword gets cut instantly, so that's kind of telling (that Meryn is prob not going to fall for his tricks).

This assessment grinds my gears, other than the facts we're talking about a television drama. Right form the point he's pointing out pummel striking between Ned Stark and Jamie Lannister, you have 2 truly seasoned swordsmen considered among some of the best and you think when they are sword locked that pummel striking is not foreseeable? Maybe you should go study Eskrima or Kali Stick Fighting and see how well that works out for you when sticks are locked? I mean other than play with and talk about swords do you actually do any kind of fighting? Also there ain't nothing wrong with hitting hard, other than the fact you can't hit hard so you have a beef with it. I hear this shit in Boxing all the time, lightweights are more skilled boxers bullshit. You don't get to dismiss somebody as 'buffeling' (never heard this shit term) simply because they hit hard, you must examine the broader fighter. Go ahead and dismiss people as not being able to fight simply because they hit hard to your own peril. As far as Bron is concerned you selectively pick a piece but to address it the best defense against any attack is not to be standing in its way in the first place. If you have the option of stepping aside from an attack or go with an 80% chance of block, then you're not that bright. Unless the potential block offers a high chance of successful counter strike then Evading > Blocking and always will be. Yes ultimately its a television series and none of them are swordsmen and their choreographers, if they were ever swordsmen, have lost their focus, but your logic throughout is is utter shit and is nothing but a reflection on your small man syndrome psych'e. Sorry but thems the facts. Big hits that force the opponent to block do not then leave said opponent with jack be nimble feet after he has had to plant himself and block the oncoming blow with all he has. I spent 3yrs fighting in 76kgs divisions, 2yrs in 88kg's and then in 110kg's. I now weight 140kg's with little body fat and constantly ignoring twerps like you claiming big blokes don't actually know how to fight because we just knock opponents out one hit. As nice as it would be to rip your head off and shit down your neck, you would just cry foul because now my weight and strength is an advantage. Makes me laugh, which is it? Skill vs Strength? I guarantee you some of us have both and I bet you don't even have the strength to block a "Buffel" haha

+Sean Swisher Right. yet if you talk about REAL fighting like HEMA then that whole scene is a joke. He stabs his sword in the ground, making it duller. Both swords are of similar length, this is not advised or recommended in any sword manuals of medieval times. The excessive spins and movement with a disregard for proper footwork to avoid slipping. The bullshit of the enemies. They never attacked in sync. The one with a shield drops it after one block. The double sword block into a scissor throatcut it bull, if you block with two swords your enemy can easily control both swords. The whole situation is not real fighting. This videobwas about real fighting. HEMA, not hollywood play swords.
