We go over the basics when it comes to driving the Nissan 350Z. We cover everything from how you should start it to tricks to shifting the vehicle.
Some people think they might think all manual transmission vehicles are the same but there are a couple differences with the way the 350Z drives that need to be known to drive it correctly.

a tip for heel-toe: make sure your right heel is resting on the floor and is aligned with the accelerator. in order to brake, tilt your foot to the left and brake with the ball of your foot. in order to rev match, simply swing your right knee to the right. the action removes any possible braking error caused by trying to stretch your foot over to the accelerator. you're taking advantage of the fulcrum between the brake pedal and the ball of your foot, allowing for easy throttle blip without unwanted brake pedal articulation. in this way, you don't have to try to do two things at once with your right foot; just focus on applying the right braking pressure, and the knee action will manage the throttle. you can heel-toe down to second at as low as 20-25mph. you don't need to be braking hard in order to heel-toe.

Hi Anthony, these are some really good tips for many. I'm new to your videos and I'm glad to find you truly care about your car and know about it. Good advice on driving position, how to properly warm up the engine (drive the car, slowly, don't just let it sit forever, plus it's good to get some heat and motion into the gearbox & differential fluids before driving the car harder!), not riding the clutch, etc. I know this is an old video, but I'd like to add something that is manual transmission specific. In the beginning of the video you can be seen resting your hand on the gear lever as you drive: this is, in general, not good practice. Similarly to resting your foot on the clutch, it is very easy to unwillingly apply some pressure to the selector forks and prematurely wear out the collars. It might look/feel cool to drive like that, but it isn't recommended. All the best and thanks for these videos! I'd like to get myself a used 350 or 370 at some point, but I really need to see if I can afford the pricey insurance for them in my country in the coming years.

I've been driving my G for a couple months now, and I have developed identical habits when it comes to warming up, shifting, etc. I find that when you try to rush a shift, the shift action doesn't seem to be very fluid. If you time your cluck engagement and shift correctly, it feels very fluid. Definitely not the easiest car to learn stick on, but lots of fun when everything clicks. Great video!

And yeah sure, make a heel-toe vid for dummies bc i'm not real good at it. I can confirm that your 350z is the same like my 2010 Corolla XRS when I do Heel Toe at a dead stop I'm able to accelerate smoother at the end when the clutch pedal is almost all the way up if I accelerate with the clutch pedal still half way down my car will be jerky also if I'm upshifting at 3,000rpm my shift isn't that smooth compare to when I upshift at 2,700-2,800rpm and I shift slow rather then fast it's smooth so you are right and every manual car is different with my Accord I can shift with the clutch half way up in my Corolla XRS I have to shift when the clutch is almost all the way up that's basically the sweet spot for a smoother shift from a dead stop I actually thought it was me not driving manual right but now that you mentioned a few things in this video I go through these same issues

Just a tip, the protrusions on the upper half of the steering wheel are where you are suppose to grab the wheel. That's why they are located at 10 and 2, because that has always been the proper hand positioning for driving all vehicles. Surprisingly the Z's are so well engineered that that is by far the most comfortable position to drive the cars.

I have been driving a manual shift 350Z and Infiniti Q60S for over 10 years now and I find that the 10:00 and 3:00 position works best. But this is just for manual shift cars. As for starting, due to the fact that old 350Z's have the classic start up rattle (due to how slow the timing chain tensioner pumps up) I find it better to start cranking right away before the fuel pump primes the system. It lets the engine crank a few turns before taking off. This reduces that start up chain rattle by a good 50%. As for warming up, it depends on what speed limit the road you will be driving on has. If it is like where I am and you are plodding along at 25 - 30 mph for a mile and a half, I just wait till the engine idles down then I go. But if I were to pull out onto the main road my road dumps into, I would want that engine warmed up a lot more before pushing it to 60+ mph. Look at your oil pressure gauge. When my car is cold, it will be pushing 90+ lbs when the engine is not warmed up and I am pushing 2000 rpm. Once the engine is fully warmed up, the oil pressure is at around 60 lbs at 2500 rpm. As for syncros, the 2004 I have has never shifted well from 5th to 6th. When cold, shifts from first to second can be a bit slow as well. I have found that OEM Nissan manual transmission fluid works the best in both my Q60S and my old 350Z. If you change it once every year or so, that seems to help. It is easy to change. Nissan has both a fill hole and drain hole so all you need is a filler pump to fill it and to drain it you just remove both the drain and fill plugs. The differential is just as easy to change fluid in.
@AnthonyJ350
@AnthonyJ350 4 жыл бұрын
I would try Redline specified for Nissan, that's what The Z Shop recommends and Dan works and knows Nissans more than most people. But the older 350Z transmissions aren't as good as the newer CD-009. Most professional driving schools will recommend 9 and 3 hand position, this is how I was taught for the track kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIS5k4OdZdiojZI I don't have that timing chain tensioner noise initially, it will come on the driver's side if you let it idle for a bit but then goes away pretty quick once pressurized.

@AnthonyJ350
@AnthonyJ350 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I would call it an "issue" since the the noises don't lead to any failure. I think it's just a quirk of the car. GTRs make funny noises too. Just put a quality fluid in like Redline for Nissan and you'll be fine.

i thought that the small modulation was a sign of a clutch that was going out. The space i have to work with is very small. i have been having a heck of a time trying to get it right. Being at a light and unable to smoothly get going makes it look )and sound) like i don't know how to drive.

I just simply put the contact, listen to the fuel pump and then wait for all the lights to shut down (in all cars) , then after a few moments I turn it on and wait for the oil to make its way in the engine for a minute. A lot of people just skip all the key steps (some cars even have 3 levels where your key cliks before ignition), turn it on and run after 1 second. That's awful for the engine. And in turbos you have to wait before turning off the engine a while so the turbo cools down. I know for most of you can sound pretty obvious but where I live I see like 90% of the people skipping what I'm saying.

I’ve had my 370z for over a year now, but the rev matching is a pain for me to get right. My biggest issue is the pas pedal. Sometimes it responds to the blips, sometimes it take a few seconds to register before blipping up, and sometimes nothing happens and then when it does it goes to high. The gas pedals on the 370z are bracketed to the floor facing straight up vs the 350 and most other cars that hang down.

I'm sorry, I couldn't even make it 5 minutes in watching at 1.5x speed. These are general driving tips. They might be good, but this is not special or specific to the 350Z in any way.. I enjoy my 350Z and I hope you do too.
