Definitely the best choices for z5-7 trunking Palms and I would also add the Chamaerops humilis to that list. Their not fast growers but if you can get one with a good sized trunk you'll be ahead of the game.

You’re spot on!! I keep my washies covered from December till first week of March. I think they are a little harder to kill then what people think. I just recently got some sabal mccurtain seeds from a fella down in Chattanooga from his mother plant. Excited to see those grow. I was talking to someone the other day about sabal minors in Tennessee. They grow like weeds around my property even have them germinate during our winters. Pretty sure they could be native to our area if given the chance.

Washies are probably the best looking of the bunch.

You pretty much nailed it man. In my zone 5. It’s just Trachys and needles for me. Easy to grow, only need minimal protection, protected for a few months. Regardless of our Spring, Summer or Fall weather, they do awesome.

Well in zone 5 I think we'll count a needle as a trunker. They do get a few feet of trunk.

@@tntropics yeah. Not really a trunking Palm, but a good choice for a an easy grow/protect palm.

hey i’m out in atlanta. do you thinking i could do the washy without protection? i’m also looking at the european fan palm. i’ve got a trachey already looking for something different. I would really love your input if you find time. thank you so much!

If you're in 8A A trunked Sabal palmetto or Butia would be safest. A washy could be killed. A european fan would probably be ok.

There’s a place in the Atlanta area that grows washies outside without protection but only a few of them make it. They’re very marginal. I’m growing some as well but I give mine a little help.
