Great Tech Ben, you're absolutely correct about the importance of breaking and engine. Acceleration and deceleration is important. Pushing the rings out against the cylinders. Thanks for sharing. Hope that you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 🙏
@benalamedaracing2765Күн бұрын
Yes without decelerating it is hard to really seat in the rings and if it does not? It will not really put out all the power it can make!

I put new rings in a Civic, first time for installing rings, and read somewhere to accelerate and decelerate 10 times. The engine was in the car, so it did not get honed, but still had cross hatch. I put it in second gear and accelerated from 20mph to 50mph and coasted back down to 20. It smoked like a smokehouse, and I was scared I did something wrong....but after the 4th pass the smoke was decreasing...and after the 8th pass, it quit smoking. I was very relieved. I put 150,000 miles on that car before someone stole it, lol.

Only on engines with 4 valve relief eyebrows on the pistons. Otherwise you need to order a set with an offset pin to one side to take advantage of the benefits.

I feel like you could even do this on a broken in engine to "service it" and gain some benefit. But i would follow up with a decent smooth cruise for a while to smooth things out. Just my opinion.
@benalamedaracing2765Күн бұрын
Best to quickly break in the rings as fast as possible because an engine with rings not fully seated, pistons will actually run hotter than what it was designed to run on! Remember, this is even more critical with thinner rings and the transfer of heat to the cylinder wall and eventually to the coolant is not as good compared to a thicker 1/16 or 5/16 ring sets.

Would I be able to use a stock bore forged piston and forged rod with factory Windsor crank without using a machine shop for anything other than balancing?
@benalamedaracing2765Күн бұрын
Well that all depends specially on mains/rods bearing clearances and side to side clearance between both rods on the crank throws. Everything has to be right on or else you are destined for a poor performing engine which might not even last very long.

Great Video. I have been in the Mustang craze since the late 80s. Brings back so many memories of the Buick versus the Ford stuff in the early days. I myself still drag race an 83 fox body. I noticed somebody commented on a Mopar, Would love for you to post a little information on that. My brother has been drag racing a Dodge dart since the late 80s. His combination now is a B1 headed aluminum BILL Mitchell 572. The combination is tapped out in naturally aspirated form, we’ve been talking about doing a turbo or 2,but just don’t see how it all fit. Would love if you could share some photos and information on it. Anyways, I thoroughly enjoy your videos, knowledge, and experience. Waiting for the next one. Happy holidays !

Thank you for this awesome You Tube video Mr. Alameda 👍 Is it a good idea to change the oil and oil filter after the breaking? 🤔
@benalamedaracing2765Күн бұрын
With the old flat tappets I did change oil and filter after I break in the cam. Nowadays with roller cam hydraulic or solids, I just spin out the filter, open it up to look for debris and install a new one and top it off and off to the track!

My Dilemma is mine needs to be turned/ Adjusted. Before I could do this. But I'm not capable of making the Adjustments. By the time my brain could get a handle on how to do that, The car would rust to the ground. I guess I'm going to have to Have it tuned and broke in on an engine dino. Then take it back after it installed to Adjust for load/ Weight/ gears/ect ect.
@benalamedaracing2765Күн бұрын
As long as your combination is not an odd ball engine, most tune can be achieved without much serious screw ups.

Hey Ben, I love your channel and the wealth of knowledge that you have to offer. I have a question, specifically for the 8.2 Deck guys out here. As anyone can do the math and has likely figured it out, there are 2 ways to build a 347. Obviously the main point is, *whether you buying or re-using an existing 8.2 block* . My question is, *if you were buying a Block and Crankshaft BRAND NEW* , would you ALWAYS go *Big Bore 347* (4.125 x 3.250) ? or are there scenarios where you would go *Longer Stroke 347* (4.030 x 3.400) ?

I've never broken in a race engine. I figure that once you get it running good enough to do a burn out it's good to go. Never had any ring or piston issues that I couldn't attribute to something else. The way I think of it is anything making a thousand or more HP has a limited lifetime anyhow and I don't want to waste any of that time on breaking it in .
@benalamedaracing2765Күн бұрын
To make maximum power you have to have an excellent to very good ring seal or else you will be down on power! One indication would be the catch can from the vacuum pump fills up more than the usual amount after every pass.
@petemcpeterson6205Күн бұрын
@benalamedaracing2765 well when I leak down my 632s they always test well even after 500 passes in one case . Not only that there's just no possible way to break in a race engine that the way you describe at the level that I'm running at . The cars aren't street legal and are usually only ran for about a minute and a half before we're pushing it back to the pits .
@benalamedaracing2765Күн бұрын
@@petemcpeterson6205 I have never met a good dyno/engine shop knowing the engine is fresh and go about going max pull immediately knowing the rings perhaps pistons or build just new or just got done! I am sure there are perhaps others who, do not care to break it in whatsoever but to tell you the truth I would stay as far from them as much as possible... Perhaps we are talking different scenarios here because a lot of my engines built for racing or even serious builds will not make 500 passes. Perhaps if it is a lot slower it may last very long but not at our level!
@petemcpeterson6205Күн бұрын
@@benalamedaracing2765 well I'm making over 1200 HP and it's gone 500 passes n/a. Besides it's not a Ford so I don't have to spin the things 10000 rpm to make power so it's going to be more reliable. 500 passes is the exception though ( and a personal record by a long shot) My engines probably have an hour or so run time on them before they hit the track but it's not any type of a loaded scenario just run time .
@benalamedaracing2765Күн бұрын
@@petemcpeterson6205 you are way better than I have accomplished with my BBC @ 540 wt. non- symmetrical heads (Brodix) making same amount of power runs 8.30's @ 3400# NA 1/4 mile. Your 632 will need more cam than probably what I run in it, and there is no way I can make even close to that many 1/8 runs without freshening it up! I can make many passes if I slowed it down big time and still not 500 runs! Obtw, "ALL" NHRA/IHRA Pro-Stock GM, Mopar and of course Ford runs a derivative of the 429 Boss semi-hemi and you will not even get anywhere close to winning with a canted valve/inline heads even with symmetrical ports of any type! And on T/F F/C Nitro of course it is a true Hemi version of the 426!
