I bought a new 1983 Honda XL600R in Sydney Australia. It was powerful and a joy to ride. After it's first service at the Honda dealer where I bought it, the bike would never idle for long without stalling. The Honda dealer could not fix it and Honda Australia ignored the problem back in those days. So after taking it to other Honda dealers and to a carburettor expert, no one could fix it. After months of misery, I sold the bike at a loss and never bought another Honda again. 😊

I have a couple things I want to share. One might still be relevant. One might give off the vibe I once were a complete idiot (hopefully I improved since). I had a Yamaha XT 350. Easy to start. Except...The automatic decompression cable linked to the kick starter got misajusted over time. Unlike the XL 600 (I think), the cable pulled up one of the two exhaust valves. That valve kept being slightly opened at all time. Said valve over heated, valve seal no longer sealed. Minimal amount of oil seeping down transformed the bike into a fumigating device. All this to say that disconnecting the cable as is recommended in the video might be a good advice.

I have a 1999 NX650 Dominator, but it has an electric starter. Always starts on first stroke of piston, no choke when it is on the hottest summerdays here in Norway and when I use it is is only halfway. Sometimes I just touch the starter-button and then it is running. I had a 2000 Yamaha TT600R with a faulty decompression mechanism. The trick there was to step on the kick-starter until the compression was out and the piston just had passed TDC. Then you could get the kickstarter all the way to the top again and then step down hard. Then all the internal had so much speed/momentum and it started up on the next compression stroke.

I don't know much about the earlier system. But it was some kind of decompression system
@manic_tinkerer5 жыл бұрын
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Its the secondary chamber for the decompressor on the early years, the 5th valve opens this chamber to the combustion chamber, dropping the compression ratio by the extra volume in the side chamber so you could kick it over easier. Theyre a pain in the arse with the seats breaking and sticking causing low compression so even early bikes you often find with a welded plug instead of the valve by now. I've been fighting my '87 for over a year now. It already broke my ankle last year, and I'm back at it. I have no idea what is going on, no one seems to. Everyone is telling me the same ol every possible problem it could be, I have heard it all, done most of it. Tried 3 different spark plugs, 2 dfferent coils, replaced the head on one of the coils, pulled the carb and cleaned it out, re inspected it 11 times now, drained out the oil to look inside the case 4 times now, did the valves 4 times due to multiple different people giving different gap information, or not being clear, I have gone over electrical, replaced connectors, I just can't win, it refuses to start. Has compression, spark and good fuel, and we did get it running last month, then it just stopped again. I used carb cleaner to start it today, it backfired, and caught my airbox on fire. @NoNonsenseKnowHow7 жыл бұрын
colt ACP that's pretty uncommon for these engines to burn or break a valve. What year is your bike? The earlier ones had a 5th valve in the head that was used for decompression. And I haven't personally seen somebody put a 650 motor in this bike. But I'm sure it could be done as they are extremely similar. I would personally just pick yourself up and XR650L since you can get them pretty cheap. And then you already have the upgraded suspension and brakes. I upgraded my xl600r with suspension and wheels from an XR650L.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow7 жыл бұрын
colt ACP you should also check your timing marks and make sure it didn't jump time or anything like that as well. Stray some oil in the cylinder and see if that helps build any compression as well
@NoNonsenseKnowHow7 жыл бұрын
colt ACP oops I just mistakenly removed your last comment. LOL. I would start by pulling the valve adjusting caps and checking the valve clearance/valve operation. And yeah since yours is an early model, I think you have the fifth valve in the head. I've heard of problems with those and that's why they got rid of them. Keep me updated as to what you find. I'm very curious
@coltacp84517 жыл бұрын
i did check the valve clearances and the intake side is a little loose i can fit the .004 feeler into the intake side but loose wouldn't create compression loss tight would right. yes i just figured out mine has the fifth valve in it and they say mine has a reed valve also...according to my Clymer it says only XR models had the reed valve WTF lol crazy

Starting cold has never been the problem ....To be honest when hot? A lot of (MOST) times? You are just SCREWED....for ME? was an impossible bike to live with on a daily basis ... I did commute on one for a while and it was fine ...was cold in the AM leaving for work and cold in the PM leaving for home ...started right up no trouble ...but DAMN I could not stop anywhere once warmed up and have ANY confidence I could restart the damned thing! And too much engine to even think about push starting alone....these bikes should have had an E start button from day one ..PERIOD...from DAY ONE ...IMHO....btw other than the hot start debacle? I LOVED my old eighty three XL! When did Honda put the E-button on them? I feel like the starting issue was likely the reason they went to two carbs?? BTW other than the starting issue? Was one of my all time favorite commuter/play motorcycles! Whoever designed this bike just NAILED it for wheelies and fire roads antics ....I looked like a pro wheelie King on this bike! I could just hold indefinitely and even shift gears lofted! phenomenal! I'd almost like to buy a nice used one and convert it to Estart....maybe upgrade the suspension and front brake
@dougiequick15 жыл бұрын
Fool proof all temperature starter fix! Involves one assmeply and less than a minute to install. Step one unscrew fuel tank cap and dislodge breather tube. Roll the kick-start only version out from under hoisted cap ...Now? Simple just roll a complete (minus cap) XR650L assembly, lower the cap screw down to torque setting of 8.5 ft pounds and now just insert the breather tube into fork yoke stem hole ....VIOLA! Bike FIXED! Now it will start cold or hot

@NoNonsenseKnowHow5 жыл бұрын
If you remove the fuel bowl on the left side carb. (port in boating terms) lol. Then you will see a small jet toward the bottom of the fuel bowl. That's your choke circuit jet. They are notorious for getting clogged up. That's the one I drilled out a little bit
@octavehiblot24625 жыл бұрын
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Port haha! I got you!;) Primary carb so, that's ok! I'm not sure I got it though, it's neither the main jet(1.08mm) or the slow jet(0.65mm) you drilled? @NoNonsenseKnowHow8 жыл бұрын
we1dont7die well if you listen closely when I shut the choke off there is a noticeable difference. But to answer your question, I went up one size on the slow jet in the left carburetor. these bikes were getting very lean from the factory to meet regulations and that's part of the reason they were problematic to start for consumers.

@NoNonsenseKnowHow6 жыл бұрын
Grahm Dettling to be honest with you it was many years ago. But if I remember right I basically doubled its size. Get yourself a micro set of drill bits and step it up a few sizes at a time would be my suggestion.

I added a link in the description to the drill bit kit I used. Let me know what size you end up using and how it works out. Sorry I didn't have the size I used documented.
@GrahmDettling6 жыл бұрын
NoNonsenseKnowHow hey man I found out that it's actually getting too much fuel at first and flooding out so I just don't use the choke at all but it's still massively hard to get to start. Once it starts it runs great. I think it may be a compression issue because if I spray a little oil in the cylinder it seems to start after a few kicks. I just recently did a bore and new 101mm piston and new valves have been lapped in. I have spark as well. Not sure what could be the issue at this point
@GrahmDettling6 жыл бұрын
Also is it possible for you to kick your bike over without pulling the decompression lever. I can stand on mine and bounce and it won't budge without the lever pulled in.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow6 жыл бұрын
Grahm Dettling have you done a compression check on it and then after putting oil in it as well?

My XR 600R kicked back an broke my ankle. What would cause that? I've been told a ton of things. Miswired headlight, CDI, Stator, bad coil, timing is off... How do I track this down, I'm not giving up. I broke my ankle in 2 places and have been down for over a month now. And with everything I have been through, I haven't even gotten to ride it =(
@NoNonsenseKnowHow6 жыл бұрын
Eric Ek damn man I'm really sorry to hear that! Yes it could really be so many things causing the kickback. Even something as simple as not giving it a really solid firm kick following through with it. If you give it a pussyfoot kick, sometimes they can kick back. Without looking at it, it's really hard to take guesses as to what the problem could be
@NoNonsenseKnowHow6 жыл бұрын
Eric Ek I will say that the hardest kick back I ever had and one that almost broke my ankle was on my 1995 KLR 250. The problem ended up being a worn out intake camshaft lobe. So the intake valve was closing too soon, and for some reason cause the really nasty kick back. I finally did get it started, but I could hear all the tapping in the top end period after repairing the camshaft never had the problem again
@NoNonsenseKnowHow6 жыл бұрын
Eric Ek I would start by verifying your camshaft timing. And do a Google search to find out if other people have had similar problems
@skarekr0w36 жыл бұрын
I've googled the crap out of it. There is very little information. KZbin was where I heard the Headlight was a thing,someone was having kick back problems and said it was the headlight. The Headlight was something I did, as the headlight was disconnected when I got it. I didn't think you could get the wires wrong, nor did I think Honda would make a very very dangerous situation for anyone who takes the light off... The thing is it does fight you to start. I can't tell if it's electrical or mechanical.

Why in the world would you remove an automatic decompression lever that works perfectly? Not like you're saving weight removing the cable. Having to judge just how far past compression you're kicking and how much are pulling in the manual release seem like a lot of extra unnecessary nonsense. The only reason that manual is there according to my owner's manual was if you dumped the bike you can pull in the lever and kick it a few times to clear the bike out
