Sometimes I was at the front of And of course when I got back to my father, I was dirty like hell. But I loved it. It was a experience that I never will get back. Diesels were worse. Hope the Greta brigade don't start banging on about steam loco's, the output of CO2 is miniscule from engines on heritage lines and main line in comparison to the stuff spewed out from other forms of transport world wide

its not environmental factors. Diesels are far cheaper to operate unless you happen to be the Norfolk and Western, and even they had to switch due to peer pressure basically.

@@richardcummins5465 Agreed, but even the only railway that technically saved money by using steam, the Norfolk & Western, was eventually forced by (basically) peer pressure. its just too tempting to be able to take off broken part, and bolt in a new one (like power assemblies), instead of making a new part from scratch.
