Man here who does not wear make-up but wanted to give my 2 cents on sunscreens. :) A couple that are worth checking out are Burnout sunscreens (both Clean and Clear and Ocean Tested) and BWC-Beauty Without Cruelty SPF 30. Burnout sunscreens have been super popular on a couple of the more popular skin forums over the years.I've tried MANY zinc oxide sunscreens over the last 7 years or so and they almost always let me down. Too greasy or too white. I like mine to have at least 18% zinc. These sunscreens are also generally much less costly per ounce than the ones on this videos list. It's also not just about putting on sunscreen. You have to put it on in the correct amount or your getting much less protection than you think. Something almost everyone does. The dose used in FDA sunscreen testing is 2 mg/cm2 of exposed skin. That translates to 1/4 tsp for the face alone. Same amount for the neck as well. 1/3 tsp for large faces.

Thanks for doing all the hard work for us! I have redness on cheeks and chin. My favorite product for years has been Clinique City Block Sheer SPF 25. 7.3% titanium dioxide, 6.9% zinc oxide, tinted beige. 1.4 oz for $23. I stock up when Clinique runs a gift with purchase offer. I can't justify spending $40+ on sunscreen. I will try the Neutrogena Healthy Defense Purescreen that you recommended since the price is right. No one needs to toss out what they already have though. Save it for your neck, hands and arms and keep a tube in your car. My dermatologist said SPF15 blocks 94% of sun, SPF 30 blocks 97%, SPF 45 blocks 98%. Reapplying is more important than SPF#.

Thank you Angie! So comprehensive and easy to understand. I've commented before on the issue of sunscreen and HOW frustrating they are. I can not tolerate pilling nor having to add a sunscreen along with my anit aging products AND a moisturizer. But, I have got a few notes from your vid to try, thank you. Right now I'm using Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer with SPF of 47. The sunscreen ingredients are Zinc Oxide 6.4% and titanium dioxide 5.1% and I'm loving it so far. I use no primer and I'm not a powder foundation kind of girl. I use a CC cream or my ESDW and it works beautifully, no white cast. It is a little shiny, but drys down. I've mentioned it before but am compelled to tell you again, your skin looks flawless especially in this vid. Whatever combo of makeup your wearing...IT"S WORKING. You look amazing. Thanks for all the wonderful info and all the work you put into doing these videos.

You are not applying enough sunscreen on your face. Hence if you apply enough amount, they can even be more shiny or leave a whiter cast.

While the Anthelios 50 Tinted sunscreen contains only titanium dioxide, the untinted Anthelios 50 contains both titanium dioxide and zinc. Please give this one a try as the liquid is lovely, the finish is almost invisible, and it works well for sensitive and acne prone skins. I have skin similar to yours in tone and texture and have never found a better sunscreen.

What a terrific review, Angie. I know this took much time to prepare for us, so THANK YOU! I've mentioned it before, but for your viewers' sake, I will say it again. PLEASE wear sunscreen for ANY extended exposure, and do not fail to reapply according to the directions. I had skin cancer on my face last year. It grew directly on the edge of my lower eyelid (where one would line the rim with eye liner). It was no larger than a pimple, but the plastic surgeon calls skin cancers "the tip of the iceburg" because they know a much larger mass is often found UNDER the skin. Such was my case. A 2.5 cm x 3 cm area of flesh was *removed* from my under eye, and plastic surgery was then required to "fix" it. One is *awake* for the multi-stage removal process, which grossly involves cauterizing with each stage. Folks, this is NOT something you want to go through, not to mention the life threatening nature of skin cancer, especially melanoma. Take Angie's information, here, and RUN with it. Wear DAILY sunscreen, all.

Woohoo!! Thank you fir the awesome review! As a 2-time Stage 4 Melanoma survivor, you can imagine sunscreen is über important to me and I'm forever on the search for the Holy Frail sunscreen. You provided great information on several I've not tried...yet. Those of us ex-CancerChicks are now looking more for a mineral product with a higher zinc oxide percentage (as close to 20% as possible) as we feel this is much more of a true protection rather than the old SPF numbers. A few high "zinc-ers" I have tested and like are SuperGoop, Suntegrity, Drunk Elephant (my current fave plus, they donate to elephant causes) and CyberDerm, only in Canada so far, but they have super-duper customer servuce and love to send full-size samples. Thank you again for another fantastic video!!

I swear by Obagi Nu-Derm Sun Shield SPF 50 PA+++. It's broad spectrum with 10.5% Zinc Oxide. Been using it for years and have not gone a day without it. It's seriously the best. I get the opportunity to try countless, and I mean countless, sunscreens and other skincare products for free because I have a board certified dermatologist in my family, so it says a lot when I have a specific product that I continue to use and purchase with my own money!

I use the Coola Bare Republic Sport. It does make a bit of a white cast but not as bad a some other companies. The trick I use to eliminate the white cast (for body and face) is to take some of my natural moisturizer (for face) or body lotion (for body) (I use Shea Moisture brand) and mix the sunscreen with a bit of the lotion and some rose water. I will do this in the morning just in the palm of my hand for my face and apply, and if I know I'll be out in the sun for the day, I use one of those travel squeezy bottles and mix them together and bring it with. I find rubbing it in pretty well and with it being mixed with the lotions and rose water, it helps to eliminate the cast. Not sure about this working with other brands but the Coola brands are great :)

Hi Angie, what a great round-up!! Another thing that I'll add is that, you need a full TEASPOON to apply both to face and neck (maybe you already mentioned this somewhere in the video) to give the SPF rating that it stated, not to mention it has to be reapplied every two hours. Many do not realize, but 5 mL is quite a lot. This is, bar none, the biggest problem I have with all physical sunscreen, almost everything that I've tried out there will inevitably leave a white cast if you apply a full teaspoon on the face, much less topping it off with liquid foundation etc. (and I do have dry skin).
@geekNchic8 жыл бұрын
How much SPF are you using daily? It doesn't look like a 1/4 of a teaspoon at all.

I really enjoyed this video. I am always on the search for a good, cruelty free, sunscreen with enough anti-age ingredients so I don't have to invest in an expensive serum. I don't really care what I pay for it as long as it is SPF 30 or higher, is hydrating, has the above mentioned attributes and can be worn alone with a little powder or under make-up. As you see, it is a very tall order. I have found two products that you may want to try. One is the Peter Thomas Roth CC Cream, SPF 30 with vitamin C. It is tinted and doesn't make your face very shiny. It's matte finish, which comes in, I believe, three shades, is great for oilier skin types but I find that I need to add something with it since my skin is on the drier side. I use the Josie Muran Pure Argon Oil. The drawback to this sunscreen is that it does leave a white cast. The other sunscreen I have that I like is the First Aid Beauty Sunscreen Moisturizer SPF 30. It has anti-aging ingredients, great moisture and doesn't leave a white cast. It looks great on its own with powder, or under make-up. For my powder I use the Bare Minerals Hydrating Moisture Veil SPF 15. I am still on the look-out for a great foundation with all the aforementioned ingredients so I don't need a sunscreen after all. I know this is long but maybe these are some products that you may have never thought of trying. Cheers!

Clinique makes a physical sun screen too. It's the city block 25. I quite like it, although I believe that the product does not have strong UVA protection because it doesn't have the UVA symbol that products in the EU have to carry if they protect sufficiently, although the packaging says broad spectrum. It's not water proof, but behaves well in 'normal' situations. It has a tint and I use it like a BB cream. It makes skin look very perfected, which I like. This video is fab though. You do the best comparison videos!

Thanks for the great video! I have very sensitive skin, and most "normal" sunscreens feel (and look) like an acid peel. Being a fair-skinned redhead, I do not have the luxury of being able to wear a moisturizer with spf throughout the non-summer months, it's just not enough. Recently, I have been using Cerave, and I completely agree with you when it comes to the liquid foundation. I have even started to carry a small makeup bag around because of the smearing throughout the day. If I need to go out immediately after work I run into the bathroom, wipe off my make-up (except for my eyes), and totally reapply. I know you somewhat brought up the water-resistance for some of these products, but I do wish you would have spoken more about that. Not just for going to the pool factor (even though that is a must as well), but here in the South we tend to "glisten" heavily, with our 100 degree heat and 95+% humidity. So having a true water-resistant or waterproof spf is extremely important, otherwise our faces are dripping down the front of our outfits. If you could maybe post the water resistance of each of the products in the description above, for future reference, that would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

I really liked the Coola, but could not get over the scent - it stuck around. I've tried a different Cotz - Cotz FACE. The tint actually provides a little coverage, and it has a very matte finish. It was drying for me, but I can see where oily complexions would really like it. Currently I'm using Avene High Protection Mineral Cream SPF 50. The tint is more pink toned, not too shiny, but quite thick (I have to do my face in zones, doesn't smooth over skin well). I like it so far. Wearable on its own, but I prefer to dust the Milani powder foundation + Wet n Wild Reserve your Cabana over it (I like a little glow).

Angieeee! I can't believe you didn't include the mineral sunscreen I suggested to you months ago! Please try the Live Live Sunscreen. Two other options: Chanel SPF 50 has 18% zinc oxide and 4% to 7% one chemical sunblock. Works well under make up or by itself disappears on the skin beautifully. I also just started using Paulas resist sunblock 30 SPF not sure of the name but has a high 13% zinc oxide slightly tinted but disappears on my skin and seems to wear well. I have not tried it under make up yet.

Simply wanted to send a huge thank you for your wonderfully informative piece. Without your recommendation, I would have never discovered the Neutrogena purescreen products. I recently developed an allergy to normal sun protection and, having extremely fair skin, was spending a lot of time and money trying different anti-allergy creams and lotions in a desperate search for something that didn't make me break out in red lumps and itch crazily! Not only does the facial product offer me great protection from the fierce, English sun (LOL), but it acts as a great base for my make-up, minimizing pores and covering mild blemishes. Once again, thank you so much!!!!!

So very helpful to hear your opening comments on sunscreen general info, and also your fdn experiences. And to have just the mineral sunscreens. For lots of us, chemical sunscreens don't cut it for the face bc they burn our eyes when perspiration drips off forehead onto eyelids and into eyes. Also happens with surfing or swimming. A brand I found easy to apply, feels silky, sinks in, and works with foundation is Biore UV Aqua Rich 50+ PA+++, but it's from Japan and expensive. It is on Amazon though.

I subscribed finally! :-) ANGIE, Did you know that your video of Retin-A was my motivation last year to go to my GP and have it prescribed? I've been using it eversince. All your tips on it were very useful, since I had a shock when I started itching and saw the flaky skin (I've never had dry skin) so you, telling us all the Tip&Tricks really REALLY helped. I did slow down with it, then I even took a few weeks break and now I am using it (without flaking or irritation) twice or three times a week. You're absolutely right that when it comes to Tretinoine there is no such thing as 'quick usage or results'. It really has to be built up sloooowly. ~ Thank you for all you do!!! xx

Thank you for this informative video!! I'm a 2-time Melanoma survivor (last time Stage 4 in lung & brain) and have been on the mineral sunscreen bandwagon for quite some time. I wish you had reviewed the non-tinted La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Mineral Sunscreen, as it has both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, is a gorgeous product and my personal favorite. I feel the company got a bad wrap because you opted for the tinted version. As a general rule, I find the tinted sunscreens usually only have titanium dioxide. The tint and zinc must not play well together. Thank you again for your great videos and info on the need for daily sunscreen!!

Thank you for the very thorough review; I appreciate the in-depth testing very much! Now, I'm intrigued by Hydropeptide Solar Defense. Currently, I alternate between the Paula's Choice Resist Super-Light Daily Defense SFP 30, which is a tinted zinc oxide base, and a 50/50 blend of the CoTZ Face Natural Skin Tone SPF 40 and the Lighter Skin Tone SPF 40, which unlike the CoTZ that you tested, goes on quite matte. However, if you don't like a lot of silicone, you won't like the CoTZ Face because it's basically all silicones, but the Natural Skin Tone is tinted, but I find it a tad too dark for my light medium skin, so I work in some of the Lighter Skin Tone (which is untinted) to lighten it up. On the plus side, all those silicones keep my very oily face very matte, sticks to my face like glue, and both formulations work quite well under makeup.

I don't know which Cotz formula you used in this video? The one with the natural skin tone tint is the best and it works like a primer!! It keeps my makeup on all day and blurs imperfections just like Loreal and any of those type of primers. Also it keeps my oily skin in check all day. It's my holy grail sunscreen.

I picked it up from Walmart and you get a .5 oz tub and .45 oz tube for $5.88. At 57 I still have oily skin. First time I used it I thought I hated it because of shine and foundation gliding as I applied it. The trick is to let it set for about 5 minutes and shine and glide almost disappear. I just spent a week in the intense Santa Fe, NM sun and it certainly protects! After spending big bucks finding the perfect ss, I can't believe I like this cheap one best - it's not perfect but I've yet to find one that is!

Leslie D AND..... I just realized it contains octinoxate and octsialate so it isn't 100% mineral - sorry! Since using retin A (thanks to you, Angie) I haven't been able to use chemical ss without irritation. This one does not irritate me at all, so it may be worth a try to those who don't worry about octinoxate or octsialate.

Great video! You should give Paula's Choice another try..... I use the Resist Super Light Daily Defense Mineral sunscreen and I love it. It has a tint to it and works beautifully under makeup.

Watching in HK and I've tried so many sunscreens including La Roche-Posay (mine is chemical) but I don't think it offers adequate protection and I'm going back to Bioderma which is good, but whiter. I found your video really helpful. I haven't watched for a while and you look great-you look younger and fresher. Liz

My skin has turned sensitive, and I had to switch to mineral too. I also have to use fragrance free. However, I liked the PC Hydralight better than the Neutrogena Healthy Defense. The Neutrogena was too greasy on my combination skin. My current favorite is the Neutrogena Pure & Free, which works wonderfully at minimizing my large pores with my Maybelline Matte and Poreless Fit Me Foundation, and my CG Aquasmooth foundation. I wish all the companies were cruelty free, then it would be perfect! I'd love to try your winner, the Exuviance, but it's out of my budget, unfortunately. Thanks for the reviews, they are always interesting.

Did you ever consider something like a primer to get rid of some of the issues? Some definitely didn't seem fixable, but, it would definitely add even more setting time and layers, something like Too Faced's Primed & Poreless could always help if you want to use some of those extra bottles. Thanks for the great info! I am glad you are so dedicated! I have such sensitive skin (and skin cancer runs in my family). As I near 30, my skin is getting drier, which slows down my make up, since I had been using a powder foundation. I always carry a huge hat and glasses, but I want to make sure that I'm using the best products possible!

Thanks, Angie! I just got home from shopping for sunscreen and was so happy to see your video! Target was out of my favorite one--Neutrogena Sensitive Skin. It does look a little white when I put it on, but I get no pilling under liquid foundation. I so appreciate your thorough reviews!

Angie, I've been waiting for this one, and it was worth the wait; thank you! I'm going to try the Neutrogena one first, since your other winners are more than I want to spend. Thanks too for testing drugstore as well as high-end sunscreens.

I love your videos! Great information and visible results of each product! I wonder if you have changed to CeraVe day moisturizer with sunscreen or do you just use the CeraVe PM?

As always Thanks for the video Angie.... Is the Exuviance more runny than the skinceuticals? There are a couple which would be nice to compare as well like ELTA MD physical and Replenix physical..... Cheers

Thanks for the reviews! Too bad none were perfect. I guess I'll stick with my favorite, Clinique's City Block Sheer SPF 25. I have used it for over a decade! (They have it in SPF 40 too, but it has a chemical screen that irritates my eyelids.) It is slightly tinted so there is no white cast, and it's not shiny once it sinks in. On me, it looks fine by itself, but it isn't silicone-y, so it plays well with other makeup. Just wish it was a higher SPF!

Hi Cecilia~ Thanks for subbing!! I just got a couple new sunscreens that I really like. One is Skinceuticals Physical Matte UV Defense spf 50, and Obagi Sunsheild Matte spf 50 (not all mineral). So happy to hear there's someone else out there who loves sunscreen as much as me!! xo ~angie

My dermatologist told me to use at least a 30 SPF. My basic BB cream has an SPF of 20, Garnier UPlift Transformer, and I use a bare minerals powder on top. And I always wear a brimmed hat. Any of the chemical sun screens make my eyes burn. The bare minerals probably has an SPF of 10, so I figure I get above 50 with the hat on. I can use regular chemical sun screens on my neck and decollage.

Hi me too i have burns in my skin with all chemicals protection ingredients. One more think that is very important that in mineral sunscreens have no resurch show that you got to applay every 2h like the chemical ones.Because they reflect the light and do not absorb the light. If you don't sweat the minerals stay in to the skin and work without reapplay every 2h.Have a good day

Whew ... that is a lot of testing... Thanks for all the hard work! My skin is just so pissed off from the Retin A right now who knows how it would react.. although I will say its so much smoother already ... so I'm trying to hang in there...

Great info, Angie! Thanks for all your work on this. I've been using CeraVe facial moisturizing lotion with spf30. I'm looking for more protection for the summer so will definitely give your winner a try. My question is this: The CeraVe moisturizing lotion says to reapply every 2 hours. That is so impractical. Do these products you've mention have a longer life than 2 hours?
@AngieHotandFlashy9 жыл бұрын
Bonnie Carron The reapply every 2 hours language is universal to all sunscreen products and is mandated by the US FDA. I'm not a chemist or an expert so I can't argue with the labeling. It's on there for people's safety. That said, I'm not one to reapply every 2 hours unless I'm at the beach, and as far as reapplying over makeup.... that one's still got me stumped!

I'm surprised Paula's made the worst list. Paula's Hydralyte is the first sunscreen I like and doesn't hurt my sensitive rosacea skin. I don't feel the need to wear foundation with it. I use a bare minerals blush and that's it. Have you tried Paula's new moisturizers for redness relief? I am using the one for dry skin at night with Retin A and I like it. I just discovered your channel today. Great videos!!!

Thanks for the great research Angie! In the last year or two, my skin became sensitive to Neutrogena sunblocks that it caused allergic reactions. I was disappointed because my skin was happy with it for quite some time. I switched to Anthelios SPF 50 and have had no skin problems since but after this video, I am going to switch to Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector PA 50++++.

bella4644 Check the ingredients on your Anthelios… the untinted version just changed the formula to include zinc oxide! It's on the shelves now but wasn't when I bought the tinted one back in the fall.

Hi Angie, I'm in your age group. I just started my retain-a treatment? Your suggestion. 1x a week and next month 2x. However, I have a dilemma. I plan to ski end of month which brings me to a 4x use of retin-a for February. Should I stop using Retin-a and restart in March? I will be using a helmet, sunglasses and of course my mineral base 50spf sunscreen. I am using cumlaude brand and am loving it! I don't use it with anything. Please let me know, your opinion. I am sor afraid I will really reverse the effects of Retin-a, the good thing is that I just started and am 1 wk in. I am due for my second application this Wednesday. please, anyone....should I continue use for my week ski adventure. FYI, I ski 3-4hrs a day.

Thank you for your review. I love working new workout programmes outside and therefore I use a sfp 30 on winter days and sfp 50 on summer days. My best experience up to now is the 'Dry touch for oily skin' from the French distributor Vichy. Really absorbed and pretty results with no shiny troubleshoot ;)

Hi Angie, in one of your other reviews - sorry, can't remember which one - maybe it was the one where you explained your daytime routine - you mentioned La Roche-Posay 60 and said it did provide UVA coverage even though zinc is not listed in the ingredients - do you have any other feedback on that? My derm recommended this to me so I was just wondering what your thoughts were. Below is the description from Amazon: This non-greasy, fast absorbing sunscreen milk provides SPF 60 and broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with the breakthrough Cell-Ox ShieldTM, to protect your skin, even at the cellular level.Consumer Reports' highest rated sunscreen with a perfect score!Anthelios 60 also uses a powerful anti-oxidant complex called Senna Alata, a tropical leaf extract known to defend skin cells.Water-resistant, fragrance-free, PABA-free. +Lisette Ruiz This sunscreen was highly recommended to me as well so I want to educate myself more before I use it. I was at Ulta today and they highly recommended it as well when I as looking for another alternative. Apparently it was tested and proven to be the best out of all the sunscreens they carry currently. (This is what the Ulta girl told me, not based on my own research.) I was looking at and asking questions about Exuviance and she asked me if I have used LaRoche Posay and told me how wonderful it is. I'm hoping Angie will elaborate on her findings and let us know where she got the information as well. Inquiring minds want to know. haha :)

I went to CVS today and on a different note I saved 57 percent. But, anyway I saw the Anthelios 50 mineral on sale for 19.99 for 1.7 oz. As I was having a look at the ingredients I noticed this one does have both Tianium dioxide 6% and zinc oxide 5 % it says ultra light. It is not tinted however. I haven't tried it yet but I thought for half the price I'd give it a whirl. You probably already know about this one, but I thought I would mention just in case, since you loved it so much till you found out about it missing one of the ingredients. Which at the moment escapes my old brain. I wish you'd find us old brains some concoction to help with brain freeze. I tried Ginko but then read up and it only helps if you have dementia and then it is not guaranteed.

I always love you and your videos! BUT I love MD Solarsciences sunscreens! I use the one you tested, an untinted spf 30 one and their mineral bb cream spf 50 and I LOVE all their products. I don't buff the powder on though, I press powder foundation on with a kabuki and it looks flawless. Also, instead of rubbing foundation on, if you PAT it on to blend it is flawless all day. I can see how this brand is more for dry skin types, though, because it does feel slick. A gentle pat with a tissue takes it away. Also, if you put a water based foundation on a silicone product it will pill up. In spite of your experience, people with dry, super sensitive skin may love it.

Such a great review. What is a bummer for me is that titanium dioxide causes me to break out when it is in liquid form. It must clog my pores. I have to use zinc oxide only. And, algae, causes breakouts which is in a lot of these " healthy" sunscreens. There are like 2 brands I can use...I keep hoping the technology for these will improve and zinc oxide options will increase.
