The History of Galaxyland at West Edmonton Mall begins over 35 years ago, when the park first opened as Fantasyland in 1983. It was part of the Phase II expansion of what was the world's largest mall. Originally planned as a single phase amusement park, it was a well-rounded, universally themed, and was the world's largest indoor amusement park.

Did you know? At Entrance 12 on the outside, near the Mindbender, there is a remenant of Fantasyland. Despite the fact that WEM covered it up with concrete and slapped the name of the mall onto it, you can still see the sides of the logo, and where the letters were on the bottom.

This is the best vintage Fantasyland/Galaxyland vid by far as it unlocks so many memories. The mountain and haunted cavern(Merlin's Lab) were my top favourites. But by far my second most favourite was the oversized building blocks which were actually a ground level maze with mirrors and carpet on the walls(you didn't actually climb up it) I lost count how many times I got lost crawling around in there. One time I remember it took a whole hour to find the exit but tons of fun all the same. I miss the old Fantasyland, it had a certain charm and character that i've never seen with Galaxyland today.

My most memorable childhood birthday was at West Edmonton Mall. We ate at McD's, then spent the afternoon in Fantasyland. I believe it was 1984 but this video is just how I remember it. My family lived in West Edmonton Village also developed by the 5 brothers, so we often got free passes for mall attractions... those were the days. :)

Another banger video man! I remember that balloon in the kids area, and riding that all the time. Those tunnels were so fun, going from level to level. My father and i we used to go almost every weekend, he liked that there was much to do and his favorite used to be the food court Harveys. Awes seeing those videos and pics makes me miss what it used to be. A Memory, a great memory. Again great video! Keep up the great work.

I worked there as a wallgamer/ride operator when I was 15, then maintenance in my 20's I'll be 45, I was one of the many ( MALL RATS) lol in my early teens. Awesome. Being born in 1983 I spent many years going to Fantasyland. I only remember the park once the expansion was completed. I loved the play area with the tunnels, rope bridges, slides and ball pits. So many good memories seeing this. Personally I feel like the Fantasyland park was so much better designed and cohesive than Galaxyland is. I don’t remember that balloon ride in the middle of the playcenter ever being a ride. What year did that close? Can’t wait for part II!

I totally forgot about the balloon ride in the middle of the kids area till I saw it again at the 7:19 mark, wow! My parents used to dump my two sisters and I in the play area and go watch a movie (a great idea at the time). I also remember, half way up the 'mountain' there was a small cave with a pot of gold in it. When you reached in to grab the pot of gold it would change into a scary face...I wonder if it's entombed into the mountain with renovations...or if it even exists at all anymore!

December 20th, 1985: A big day for the park as they opened the mindbender roller coaster consisting of 3 loops and many twists and turns and the parks most thrilling ride! June 14th 1986: during a concert the ride was running fine and all of that until the back car of the yellow train wheel axel came off and when it hit the 3rd loop the ride derailed killing 3 and only 1 person survived he still remembers that moment with his friends to this day

I have never gone to west Edmonton mall. However it was always a dream of mine. Well it started off with me wanting to go to Disneyland, being a kid of course I would. But my parents told me I would have to save up for it. However soon I met up with someone, and they said that west Edmonton mall was better. They had themed rooms, an amusement park, well you know it all. Well, I have finally saved up enough, but I'm going to have to wait until after covid to go. It's been a dream of mine and when I go, it will be amazing. I can't wait!!

Let me tell you I went to "Galaxyland" yesterday and It was an absolute ghost town. Not only do I think it has to do with the closing of the mindbender but also the soulless rebrand of the theme park. They even have the nerve to still call it Galaxyland powered by Hasbro. At this point, calling it Galaxyland would be a huge insult to its legacy. I'd hate to say it but the galaxyland I knew is dying just as the dinosaurs did. Seeing this video tells me just how far this park has fallen. I'd imagine it was probably even better in its early days. I was born in 2004 so I unfortunately did not experience it at the best time. Oh well.

If you pause at various moments from 6:21- 6:25, look at the right hand corner of the footage and you'll find some sort of statue's hand and what might be part of the Wizard's black robe. Yes I tripped and slipped on those floors more than a few times in my youth. I believe it was to give the feeling of going underground to the centre of the earth after entering the cave (Haunted Cavern) as there was also an illuminated orb on the wall across from Merlin's Lab (behind glass) which simulated orange and red lava flowing through it. Also who can forget that creepy soundtrack of Merlin casting his spells from his book as the bats from the bookshelves looked on. Best years of my life back then.
