Hey KZbinrs! This is a video you do not want to miss! It's both informative and entertaining. Seven motorcyclist arrived at the practice parking lot to improve their slow riding skills and we not only had a blast, but every rider left riding a little bit better than when they arrived. It's not rocket science. Like anything else in this world, the more you practice, the more proficient you will be. The main goal is to increase riders confidence in their slow riding abilities, because a confident rider is a safer rider.
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

Love this! Brand new rider here passed the MSF waiver test (I’m still shocked) and struggled mightily with the slow maneuvers. When it came test time though, I unexpectedly aced it. I dropped the bike twice doing U turns in the morning drill practice. I was about to pack it in, I really didn’t know why I struggled. Just before the test, I spoke to one of the coaches and asked him why I fell. He saw me the first drop, not the 2nd but said I probably didn’t have enough momentum to get me out of trouble when I needed it. He suggested I roll the throttle a bit and use the clutch to give me power when I need it. It wasn’t until then that I realized I was just using the bikes natural 1st gear idling speed throughout the morning, and that just wasn’t enough power for my 230 lb body. Came test time, I throttled up a bit, and went through the different evaluations with zero points taking off. I had a perfect score but don’t feel like I earned it and it was more blind luck than skill thst saw me through. I don’t have the confidence. I had my first ride over the weekend with my son. Went out for about an hour on my “new” used bike, a 2002 Vulcan 1500 classic. I bought it before my training because I liked how it looked and wanted it. After my 2 day MSF course, I fully realized that bike is not for a new, inexperienced rider. It’s a beast of a bike. When I took it out for the first time the other day, my goal wAs just to get familiar with it. Learn the friction zone, where to put my feet, etc. it has floor boards and a heel/toe shifter. I was in a Yamaha 250 during the course, two totally different bikes. My first time out, was very intimidating. I live in Brooklyn, where there are cars going every which way, stop signs, traffic signs, busses, pedestrians. Holy cow, it was intense. I achieved my goal, gained some confidence, but man do I have a long way to go. I’m really surprised to see and hear from your riders that they’ve been riding for a while now, experienced riders who don’t like the slow stuff either. I’m a new rider, but not alone. It’s not just me and there’s some comfort in that. I’m looking forward to watching more of your videos, I like the way you teach.

I just recently found your channel and I am impressed with your teaching technique. I rode my first motorcycle in 1969 and have never been through a training class. Thanks so much for all you do.

Hello Robert, My name is Darryl and I live in the vacation state of Maine. I have been riding for over 40 years now and I thought I knew all there is to know about riding and controlling a motorcycle. One wet weekend I was missing riding when I first came across your sessions and instructional videos. And like any seasoned rider I thought oh that is easy. I can do that. Well was I ever wrong. The very next weekend I took my 2011 Street Glide to a large parking lot and I quickly found out that my skills in slow maneuvers was far from being what they should be as I quickly dropped the bike. Ok pay attention to what Robert instructed and keep the throttle up and trust in the fact that I can do a slow speed turn. Long story short. I have been practicing my slow speed skills and preloading now for a few months now, and I will go and practice before going on long rides. You Sir have inspired me and your instructions far surpass other instructional videos I have watched. I will continue to watch your instructions and look forward to further enhancing my slow speed skills with your help. Again thank you.

I was consciously preloading for the first time today!!! Thank You, Great technique. I've been riding bikes on and off for over 40 years. Never took any classes back in the 70s, 80s or 90s. When my son wanted to ride, I made him take the Harley Riders Edge coarse, and I took it with him. I actually learned that you can teach an old dog new tricks. about 10 years ago, I went to another Motocop show at a bike event and learned a lot from his videos. I discovered your channel last week and subscribed.... I learned your technique of preloading to get out of a tight spot in another video. Today, I found myself in the same situation, and remembered your video. I did it, and it worked flawlessly. All the way home when stopped at a light, I put one foot down, one on the brake, preloaded and when green, just let out the clutch and raised my left foot. WOW! All these years I've been keeping both feet on the ground. Im looking forward to trying this doing UTURNs from a stop. I'm just going to have to get some pillows like your friend. He was hysterical in this video. That man should be in Hollywood! Anyway, Thank You, and looking forward to watching all your videos. Thank You for your service.

I actually thought you had mentioned you got it and I could see you were far from the camera, which Mrs. Simmons was shooting the video with yet your voice was audible although there was wind noise for a couple of seconds and then a jet passed above the area as that was loud. Great video and I will definitely be doing this once I'm on my bike as it needs repairs. It has been vandalized and a lot of parts been stolen some replaced with broken beat up stuff some missing altogether. The blinkers have also been stolen and I was happy to find the on Quikr but the person who has them quoted an asttonomical price for them. He asked for ₹12000 which is approximately $160 for something that costs less than $36 for a set of four.

Beautiful motorcycle Robert! I too was a riding lieutenant but on the opposite coast in California for 30 years. Seventeen of my years were on motors including motor officer, motor trainer, sergeant, and riding lieutenant. I still can't believe I got paid for doing something I loved for so many years. I couldn't believe when I saw none of the students beautiful (high dollar) bikes had bag protectors or pieces of hose zip tied to their front crash bars. I had to watch the video all the way through just to see how they performed. I lol when Junior brought out his pillows from his saddlebags. That was hilarious. I owned a M109R at one time in blue and white. It was a fun bike. Our city never had Harley Davidsons, but I did get the opportunity to ride the KZ900, KZ1000, BMW 1150 RT-P, BMW 1200, and the Honda ST1300P. Today I do cross country trips on a 2012 Honda ST1300A. It looks like you guys had a blast. Keep up the good work and God speed in all you do.

Thank you for your service! Always good to converse with a fellow motor officer. Especially one that shared the rank of Lieutenant. It's a kind of laid back way of teaching. But he still maintains the push to be mentally disciplined, I think it's where the push ups go concerning the front brake usage. That's what the army used (still uses?) on us so we could remember drills & ceremonies, customs & courtesies, rules of engagement, etc. If the students accept that discipline, they will get better and accomplish their goals. Jerry Pallegrino was actually a motorcycle cop as well but he's just a bit older, different approaches.

Outstanding stuff. The right teacher makes all the difference. Both the man and woman that did my 2-day basic riding course group for getting a license were....awful. I'm an older guy who went a lot of years without riding and got back into it. Came home after my first day and told my wife they were preparing people to get hurt or killed the way they taught. Yep. It's pucker time when you first hear it. First time for me was on a Yamaha Road Star 1700, country road I knew but forgot how sharp one of the curves was. Not going fast, but heard the scrape, reflexively straightened up a bit, leaned again and scraped again. Kept it on the pavement but darned lucky there wasn't a car coming the other way. That was a great bike, but low and set-wide boards. It would scrape doing a slow right-angle turn at an intersection.

Same here. My group instructors were awful. Almost no practice for any element then do the graded run. Everybody passed, but incredibly dangerous to approve getting a license after that little bit of instruction. I was an older guy that hadn't rode in a long time and getting back into it. I despised the 2-day course and the instructors, and came away thinking the curriculum was created by idiots and with little proper certification of how the "teachers" did it.

I've been riding for about 35 years. I've always ridden "standard", sport, and sport-touring style bikes, but I've recently been thinking about getting a Harley Street Glide. I've never had a bike that heavy before, and with the cost of Harleys, I would be VERY nervous about dropping it. Would you recommend getting a less expensive Japanese bike to learn the low speed skills on? If so, any ideas for what would be good brand/model to transition to a Harley later (roughly same size and handling characteristics as a harley).

But, I'll definitely be looking out for your next video! #KeepItShineySideUp #CatchMeOnAhighwayNearYou 💯
