They were huge in the 90s. I am a child of the 70s, but I ultimately have come down on the 90s as the best musical decade. I went out to Silicon Valley for the internet gold rush. I wasn't that aware of what was going on musically. One of the guys there and I exchanged a couple CDs. He gave me Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Tragic Kingdom, which really kicked me musically into the 90s. I still have both of them in my collection. There's a great video here on KZbin of her back when they were first starting out, and she's back stage all innocent and glue-gunning her costume together. Eventually of course she went sort of star star studded, plastic modern mode. Another one from then who also sort of went modern plastic mode is Sia. You should do her "The Church of What's Happening Now", which is a killer (and completely organic) tune from the old her.

How can you not love Gwen Stefani? What a talent.
@ashleydavall Жыл бұрын
Apparently Gwen was told when she was in high school that she'd never be a professional singer. A music teacher told her that whilst she could sing, her voice was too uncontrollable. All the things that make Gwen's voice unique were apparently "problems." Too much vibrato, a tendency to put in too many wails, crys and scoops in her voice & a pitch that always sat just on the right edge of being unpleasantly piercing. But, of course, its all those things that make her iconic. Despite crossing multiple genres of music from rock, to ska, reggae to rap, to classic pop, you can always recognise Gwen's voice.

I was always a big fan, but when I finally saw them live in the mid 2000s on a reunion tour, I realized just how frickin' amazing they all are as musicians, and Gwen's stage presence and live performance were unreal. It moved them up in my book from a great band to an all-time band, because I've seen plenty of bands I thought were great live and been quite disappointed.

I was almost 30 when "Don't Speak" (and No Doubt) hit me like a ton of bricks! I had just gotten out of 4 years service in the US Army which I had joined to flee the complications of my first marriage. Soon after all that, I had foolishly fell in love again with new girl in the town where my last days of military service ended. In a span of only a couple years my heart was destroyed twice (well, "big-time" destroyed in comparison to the less-destructive girlfriend break-ups along the way, lol.) But anywho, My 2nd wife and I were getting together at about the time this song came out. We both loved the brutal sadness of this mega-hit song! (Alas, by the the time 2000 rolled around, she had decided her and my best-friend were a better match than me and her!) ...but, don't weep for me folks! I've been with Andrea, my best gal of all ever since! (Andrea is a GREAT natural untrained singer! Here is a version of "Don't Speak" we did a few years ago (another girl, Amanda sang the 1st verse with Andrea joining in on harmony and taking the second from then on. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHy8dqiLadqdq7s ) This was from a live rehearsal, NOT a "studio" session. ...lol, I'm drunk and talking too much! WHEEEEEEE! (Said the snail riding the turtle!) 🤪

Talk about a band that far more than a sum of its parts. IMHO it starts with Adrian Young's drumming which always sounds like the work of two Drummers, then of course Gwen's vocals and song writing, with Tony's bass and Tom's guitar topping the whole thing off. I still remember being blown away by this track when I first heard it and it's lost none of its impact since then.

Always thought Gwen was nothing short of a phenomenal singer, mostly because of this live recording. Online it says Beth was born in 1995, but that’s only 2 years before this - so can’t be right for her nostalgia sweet spot! It’s in mine also and I was born in ‘84 - so perhaps 1985 makes more sense as her birth year than ‘95?!

"Don't Speak" was a truly massive hit song that has always gotten a fair bit radio play through the years, even still today. So if Beth was born in 1995, then she was 12-ish, circa 2007. Guess what, that was the height of solo Gwen mania, with "The Sweet Escape" dominant on radio, alongside "Hollaback Girl" and "Cool" from her first solo offering. With interest in Gwen at an all-time high, her No Doubt era hits were in relatively heavy rotation too, particularly " Don't Speak". Also, it's hardly a stretch for interest in an artist to lead to a dive into their back catalog. Seems like a logical serious music lover thing to do. 😊

@christhornycroft3686 Жыл бұрын
I think her going off key is intentional. She’s singing like she’s crying. It’s a breakup song and she’s expressing that emotion. It’s also 90s punk/ska rock. It’s part of the style, from what I remember. Like every boy punk band sounded like whining little kids in the late 90s and early 2000s.

i think that gwen stefany in this song is more like it is in metal bands the voice is made to support the lyrics NOT to be "beautifull" for exemple if you listen to "fear of the dark" from iron maiden there is that " uneasyness" in the voice to make the lyrics of someone that feel fear of is surounding because of the dark, same with metalica "master of puppets" there is "hatred" and "killing and sufering" intend to sustain that what is speaking is the drug itself that kill the one taking it! i think that's the way at least in heavy metal singing with the "intention" of the lyrics ( it's more or less like acting) GS in "don't speak" sing with that "ibtention" of suffering and running away that the lyrics give!
