I just found this video. I rode a 2013 K1600GTL for 8 years and loved very minute of it. My wife and I did a 2-4 week trip on it, plus weekend trips. The inline 6, its 160 hp, and the 130 pounds of torque made the bike very fast, very nimble, and very easy to start from a stop even when loaded down with passenger, gear, and on a hill. On the highway or interstate, with two up, loaded with gear for a 2+ week trip, it never felt like a large, heavy bike loaded down bike. More like what it must be like to fly an F-18. Steady, smooth, and when you needed it, a lot of power. Plus, with a bike with this amount of horsepower, it got very good gas mileage. But, there is a learning curve with the bike. It is top heavy, particularly the passenger sitting even higher than the driver. All of which makes low speed handling more challenging. You need to spend time in a parking lot doing slow speed turns and figure eights to really begin to feel comfortable with it. But, once you acquire the skill, it becomes second nature and easy. There are items that should be replaced. I put a large windscreen on it, taller and a little wider with a vent. Highway pegs, particularly if you are taller as I am. A rack on the top box. Plus, I would add a custom seat. My preference is Corbin. I have found them to be very comfortable. I could ride from where I live in SoCal to Hollister, CA, where the factory is located, and have a custom seat made for myself and my wife and make a weekend of it.. I’ve used CorbIn on all my prior bikes. I only gave it up because of health issues (I have two different cancers, have been through heavy chemo and a stem cell transplant, and the neuropathy in my feet have cause a balance issue), otherwise I’d still be riding it (I just turned 74).

I have ridden my K1600 GTL for 52,000 miles. Earlier this year, I took two different rides on the new Wing DCT. The K1600 definitely has more power, much stronger in a top gear roll on then the Wing. Although the K is 50 pounds lighter then the new Wing, the Honda is far more nimble and easier to maneuver then the K1600. After riding the GW, I got back on my K1600, it felt considerably heavier, The Gold Wing is rock solid on the 4 lane, where the BMW tends to move a bit. According to nearly every owner of the 2018 GW, the fuel mileage is better then the K1600, but the BMW has a larger fuel tank giving it a little more miles before a fuel stop. I would say the BMW is the sportier of the two bike, but the Wing gives more of a relaxing experience. Some talk about high maintenance cost on the BMW, I have not found that to be true. In any of its forms, the K1600 is a great bike and I highly recommend it. With that being said, I have a new Gold Wing DCT on order for spring 2019. I gotta try them all...…….

Lawn Ranger: I'm looking to pull the trigger on a new GTL soon. What's stopping me? Reports of questionable reliability and even more troubling are reports of BMW being a 'disingenuous' in regards to honoring its warranty claims. Honda, on the other hand, seems to have an excellent record of reliability as well as a more extensive dealer network. For me, the machine more suited to my riding style and tastes is the GTL. Therefore, I'm on the 'horns of a dilemma' as the saying goes. I would appreciate your input on this, if you would.

john Hanrahan,....the problems most common with the K1600 have been water pumps and the handle bar switches, which in some cases, bad switches would not let the bike run. These problems were in the early K1600's up through probably 2015. Many K1600's had these two problems, including mine. They also had ignition coil problems which were updated in 2014.There were so many, it gave the K1600 and early reputation of unreliable. BMW replace my water pump and switches under warranty. I considered these minor problems as the bike has never let me down. The internet is a great place for information but it is also a place for all the whiners that gripe about everything. I have owned 3-1800 Gold Wings. When I first started following the GW forums, I was almost afraid to take the bike anyplace for fear it would breakdown, all because of the negative remarks from other GW owners on the forum. I never had a problem with any of the 3 Wings, 2001, 2003, and 2012. The K1600 is a great bike and I dare to say, with the power and A+ handling, more fun than the GW, you will love it.

I've had a 2006 Honda ST1300 since new in 2006. I love it. Love the range. Love the handling... similar to my 1998 VFR800. But I have been longing for the touring upgrade, like heated seat, heated grips, cruise control, nav... but retain the sport feel of the ST. Honda, in their wisdom, decided to to downgrade the Goldwing to fit it in as an upgraded ST. Didn't work. They not only lost storage capacity from the old GW, better in total when equipped with the Honda top box (curiously only available from the European market), but they sacrificed fuel capacity from 7.7 gallons on the ST to 5.5 gallons on the new GW. The last straw for me was a video posted in the Austin press release from early 2018 where EVERYONE rode the same bikes on the same routes with, seemingly, the same cameraman. Only ONE of those journalists had the audacity and the honesty to show what happens when the new GW was ridden aggressively into a turn. Over an over and over, the rider scraped underparts on fairly nonaggressive turns. That was the "no brainer" moment that sealed the deal from me on the BMW1600GTL. I bought the BMW in April 2018 and have loved every minute of it. It may be "long in the tooth," but if Grandpa is still eating steak and corn on the cob, he's a happy camper!

I owned a 2012 K1600GTL, and found that the center of gravity with a passenger was a big issue. Riding solo was not so bad.The luggage is mounted high up, as is the pillion. I felt unsteady at stops and lower speeds with a passenger. The performance was astounding, as was the fuel economy and range. I traded it in though for the K1600B which gives me the performance without the top heaviness. For two-up riding I have the new Yamaha Venture which I just added a trailer hitch to. The new Gold Wing is great, but I didn't like the smaller seat, smaller tank and reduced cargo. Every bike has it's strong and weak points. Which is why I settled on 2 bikes!
@burnerjack015 жыл бұрын
Have you brought K1600B up to speed? My neighbor bought one and said its a great bike except for the highway. Says it feels unstable at speed. I bought a GTL in December and just got to riding it. Sure enough, crosswinds are definitely "concerning" on the highway and doing a high speed run, say, around 100 or over, and it feels "twitchy". Twitchy to the point that I don't think I'd even try to go over a buck. My V-Strom (2004) would go maybe 120 and while ya gotta "pay attention", it was 'doable'. The Beemer makes me feel less confident than it should. Very disappointing. Maybe a tire change is in order(?). On the other hand, day-to-day riding, state highways and backroads is great, ultimately 'flickible', amazingly so for a big tourer. Any comments about the experiences yo have with your bike would be appreciated.

Each to his own. The cost of ownership is definitely higher on the BMW. I’m amazed every time I get on my Goldwing how it handles for such a large bike and it’s much easier to drive then my Boulevard. It has more then enough get up and go even with two up. My wife likes riding on the GW too.

I would say this is a pretty good review. I bought this bike last year. Its very powerful and very fun in the mountains. However, when you get on the highway, its not as stable as you would think and tends to drift a little bit which means you'll have to pay attention. Raw power on this bike is incredible and I do like the sportier seating. Ideally, I'd like to have both this bike and the wing. I believe the GW is better suited for highway and the BMW is better suited for everywhere else. The bikes excel in different environments.

The Goldwing was not meant to be a sport bike but now as of the 2018 it is and is no longer in my mind a full "Touring" bike. One just can't sit back and stretch out your legs and hit the cruise. A " Touring" bike is meant to take your time and enjoy looking at the scenery not to race by it in a blur. Now there are only 4 MFG's that make the big bikes ( Harley, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Indian).

+ point for the k1600 is you can cruise to the B500 in the Black Forest then open it up a race through those glorious back road bends. Touring in Europe is about getting to the mountain passes and then having fun.

Inline sixes are Supreme. I had two CBXs, a silver 81 and the pearl white 82, in the day I had both at the same time. BMW should have produced a svelte pure sport version similar to the CBX super sport, that would have been impressive.
@austinman12345676 жыл бұрын
I had a K1200LT the predecessor to the K1600. The weight was what eventually made me change to an R1200RT. Every time I stopped I was watching for gravel that my foot could slip on, resulting in the bike being on it's side. The R1200RT is much less stressful in that respect. That said, these big bikes (K1600, Goldwing) are a great way to tour. One other thought, service costs; there is a lot of plastic on these bikes and it takes time to remove. If you aren't doing the work yourself you are paying someone a lot of money to remove and refit the fairings.

The only area where Honda even has a chance of getting ahead of BMW's K16 is entirely due to the DCT and it's very simple shifting system. I ride a K16 GT, it's amazing. 680 pounds (after i've made a few modifications) fully fueled. I average 250-260 miles at refuel which I do just before the reserve comes up. Owned 3 different BMW's in the past. One of them was K1200. I've tested the K1600 and K1200RT too. In general excellent engines, very good suspensions, very well tuned sporty bikes. If it has to be a BMW, I would go for the K1200RT. Does the job as well, but gives overall a more satisfying and relaxing experience. You like to have it more sporty, get a second proper sport bike and not a clunky 6 cylinder. Buy BMW's models which have been for at least 3 years on the market. BMW does not test their new models sufficiently and most of the problems are with the parts from the suppliers. BMW builds the engine and the frame, everything else comes from suppliers. The German biker magazine MOTORRAD, which does 50'000 Km reliability tests and is absolutely biased towards BWM, had in the past few years several BMW's falling apart. K1300GT - Clutch basked disintegrated while driving on highway. R1200GS, 2 bikes tested, both didn't manage to survive. Gear boxes falling apart destroying the engine. Current R1200GS was so bad (30% of customers had serious complains) that 3 years after first release they had to switch the gearbox vendor and redesign the drive train. Currently I own a Honda VFR, made 40'000 km on it and had not even one issue. Sure, Hondas are not as sporty as BMW's, get a decent chip-tuning and the fun is back.

Are you REALLY saying that 6 cylinder engine is "CLUNKY"? Don't be ridiculous, by all accounts (including mine) it's the smoothest engine there is on a sport-tourer. Now, the transmission and drive chain might be another matter. But I think even "agricultural" is pushing it in that regard.

Love the look. BMW takes a different approach to motorcycle aesthetics which is truly unique. What this bike’s needs though is backlit handlebar switches for night riding and a TFT screen. I've both bikes, 2020 BMW K1600 GTL with the option 719 pkg. and I also have a 2018 Honda Goldwing DCT. The difference is if you're looking for a sport ride and speed the BMW all day long. The Goldwing has some serious speed also but you need to be in the sport mode. The Goldwing is the best bike in my opinion for long distance if the trunk and the saddlebags could hold more gear, that said the BMW is the best all around bike. The Beemer has a larger fuel capacity at 7.0gal and a lot more trunk and saddlebag space. You can also remove the trunk and saddlebags. I took the trunk off and the saddlebags off and was able to hit 140 mph on the Beemer in 6th gear, I need to leave it in 5th gear and see what it can do. Bottom line you can't go wrong with either bike, it all depends on your personal preference. The BMW will cost you $10,000 more than the Goldwing. Enjoy your ride no matter what you ride.

I've ridden so many different bikes and have mostly owned sport bikes. Love carving up a turn. But I also ride it to work on the freeway. (The balancing act with the tires, ha.) About 250K miles on bikes. For over 15 years I've been following sport touring for my wife and I. I'm 55 now and want to tour with her and still carve it up. At first, I was set on the Honda ST1100. The GW was always in my mind but I've ridden older versions and didn't like the weight and living room feel and turn clearance. Plus, people turn them into 3-wheelers and pull trailers. Unbelieveable. No offense, but that isn't me. Then I heard about the K1600 GT and GTL and 5 years ago I decided to get one, even after many rides on Road Kings and Ultra Limiteds. (Beautiful bikes but not me.) Nope, I'm saving for the BMW. So this past August, I did it. I bought the 2020 K1600GTL, fully loaded. 160 HP and 130 ft/lb of torque. I got it in black but I wanted blue but there was only 1 in the USA (NH and I'm in CA). I looked at the revised GW and read the reviews (didn't ride it). The GW is a much better looking bike than the GTL but if that were my main concern, I'd of bought the HD Ultra Limited. No, what I bought it for is exactly what it does. Everything is so well designed and put together. I really hope it's dependable because this bike is amazing. Simply amazing. I get about 39 mpg, has so much power and control. Went up the coast to Oregon to visit friends. Very stable in the turns along PCH. I feel the weight when I stop, but nothing at 5 mph and absolutely smooth at triple digits. I'm spoiled for any other bike. If you love to ride and you've ridden bikes for many years, I can't imagine you not loving the GTL. Keeping the rubber down.

You spend more time figuring out that bike's electronic crap than i did when I first got mine. All I did was get it on the road and worry about the other stuff later. You should take the time to properly get to know the important functions that will definitely change your perspective of how the bike really performs, like the ride modes and the dynamically adjustable suspension (something you can do while riding). Changing the pre-load settings on the k16's suspension will quiet down it's ride at speeds.

I took one out this weekend and it rides nice, it's comfortable, sporty looking, and most of all feels light. One MAJOR drawback for me is that Honda SHRUNK the heck out of the bags. You can fit one full face helmet in the rear trunk, the right saddle bag is tiny (because of the drive shaft) and the left bag isn't much bigger. Honda is off the list just because of the storage on the new bike. Still searching for a bike but the Indian Chieftan is next on the list.

@benstabile84935 жыл бұрын
@@kdkd693 From 2017 onwards, the throttle mapping is muted. I have the 2016 and it is wickedly quick to rev. With an aftermarket tune, the later models can be restored to awesomeness. And all the newer features (Shift-Assist-Pro, Reverse, etc.) are great additions. I will happily upgrade once they refresh a few things: hopefully a little better technology will go into the dash/GPS integration, wind management, drive-chain lash, better speakers or optional use of that wasted space (for those who don't use it), and … (well I guess that's all I have for now ;-).

I had the new 2018 goldwing dct, and sold it for the GTL option 719 within a month. The goldwing felt like a huge scooter, which is also speed limited, btw. The goldwing never ignited my senses, which is why I ride a bike in the first place. In south Africa, we dont even get nav on the goldwing, and according to gw forums, everyone is complaining about how crappy the nav is on the goldwing. So for south africa, that huge screen was only used to see what radio station you arw dialled into. As for car play, it was a nightmare. It kept disconnecting all the time (a Honda problem which everyone is having worldwide). You say the bike looks dated, you should have a look at the option 719, with the forged wheels and brown diamond stitched seats. It looks classy, well built and expensive. We also get a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty on our BMW's, and that's good enough for me, although I know riders that have had 1600's since 2012 with over 100000 km and no major problems reported.

Both bikes are excellent machines. I really struggled as I was split down the middle. In the end the lack of storage and fuel capacity pushed me away from the Honda. These are touring machines but the Beemer is simply more capable.

Before buying, I compared 3 Touring Motorcycles: (1) 2016 H-D Ultra Limited CVO, (2) 2016 Honda Goldwing, and (3) the 2016 BMW K1600 GTLE. 1. Power (CV-rpm): 96 to 5010 - 118 to 5500 - "160" to 7750 rpm (the most powerful). 2. Torque (Nm): 165 to 3750 - 169 to 4000 and "175" to 5250 rpm (Greater Torque). Note: more than 70% of maximum torque available from JUST 1500 RPM. (122,5 Nm) 3. Weight (kgs): 416 - 417 and "348" (the lightest). 4. Total Length (mm): 2600 - 2630 and "2489" (the shortest). 5. Wheelbase (mm): 1626 - 1689 and "1608" (the shortest wheelbase). I decided on the 2016 BMW K1600 GTLE. It is a rocket, agile, fast, powerful, esthetic, EXCLUSIVE Character, elegant, stylized, smooth, grave without scraping the asphalt, etc. For all that, I chose it. I am very satisfied. I have the 2016 F6B goldwing with upgraded suspension . That garmin nav is better than the newest wings. The goldwing old and new versions need the suspension upgraded. The stock springs can’t even support the bike off the side stand. The bmw is faster and has better suspension stock. But a wing with traxxion dynamics suspension or equivalent is the ultimate touring machine. I’ve been cross country 3 times and would not trade my F6B for a new one or the K1600. Bmw has a Great motor though heavy. The flat 6 honda gets that weight down low.

It also depends if you want one bike that does everything (not just Touring) I seriously considered this bike but on seeing it in person I thought 'this thing is massive' and went for the FJR, have you ridden one of these?
@benstabile84935 жыл бұрын
The FJR is a great bike. I own both an FJR and a K16GT and I highly recommend either, depending on what you prefer. But both of them are pretty heavy. More importantly, perhaps, both of them are a bit wide and require you to set your feet out to the side a bit, making them seem taller. The K16 has some seat height options but it's somewhat heavier than the FJR. So with either bike, treat them with respect and be safe. They are not toys for little boys (or girls). And I don't mean that in any way disparagingly. Both of these bikes are pretty dangerous if you can't exercise full control over that weight, height, and power.

I don’t get it! 🤣

if that can help you, I rented the 2019 DCT GW for a day and if you're alone it is verry fun to drive and stable at any speed, and easy to handle at low speed. if you want more power, you change to SPORT mode but my wife hated the back seat, no rails to hang on, small top case and bags, GPS is verry hard to use and no touch screen. This is why I'm looking at BMW comments ;-)

I have not ridden either an 1800cc Gold Wing, or a K1600 BMW, BUT, I have owned a 1500cc Honda Goldwing, and I currently own a BMW K1200LT, which is purportedly the bike that forced Honda to release the 1800 GW earlier than planned, and if I were in the market for a new Full Dress Touring bike, I would ride both, but I think I would still buy the BMW?

Can the BMW compared to the Goldwing automatic transmission?
@jamesbeaudin19396 жыл бұрын
I can tell you do not know very much about this GTL given how long it took you to just get it started. AND your comments about the Navigator shows at complete lack of understanding that it is not just a rebadged Garmin but it actually integrates with the bikes controls and provides more detailed engine performance and operating information (Engine Temp, voltage, mpg, odometer etc. etc. etc.) and this is besides the info that can be toggled through the main BMW control panels! Also the navigator can be removed from this bike and connected to your home computer to load new LIFETIME maps and set up your touring rides. So Please learn more about the bike and control before giving such a poor quick review!
@zunaidkajee45405 жыл бұрын
I could not agree with you more. It was really unfortunate that the reviewer did not take a few minutes to learn what the nav unit can actually do. He also fails to understand that, the unit can be used in a motor vehicle as well, and also be transferred from one bike to another. That is brilliant from BMW. What happens a year down the line when the Honda nav unit gets outdated, you sit with a bike that has a huge tft display that has no purpose. With bmw, when they come out with a new unit, you just change the unit, not the bike! He also has no idea that you can fit a sd card fully loaded with music files that play through the bike or helmets in the nav unit, and everything gets displayed on the screen. Telephone calls and info can also be routed through the nav unit. Very poor homework was done by the reviewer.

It wouldn't compare to the K, it has 160HP and 129LB FT of torque, it pulls like a sports bike and wheelies just as easy. Imo, they are in two different categories. The wing is a luxury SUV with two wheels and the BMW is a 750il with two wheels.
@Rambler3586 жыл бұрын
Dennis Karnes - the Wing makes its torque down low, where the K has it higher. This gives you better low end pull on the Wing compared to the K. But the K has it beat on the mid-range on up.
@burnerjack016 жыл бұрын
@@Rambler358 70% of the Beemer's torque comes on at 1500 rpm. On a bike that's 20 -80 lbs. lighter. That's about 90 lbft @ 1500 for both bikes. So, I guess I don't see the GW pulling harder. In fact, considering the weight difference, if anything, I would expect the GTL to pull harder.
@lawnranger34326 жыл бұрын
@@Rambler358 …..you are correct on the Wings low end torgue. 108 ft lbs below 800 RPMs. I thought the Wing would pull harder then the K1600 down low, but it doesn't and I'm not sure why. The BMW will run away from the Wing in a top gear 60 mph roll on. I tried it twice with different bikes. The K1600 has the power everywhere.
