Map of the Soul: 7 is basically bts revisiting their history as a group for seven years. They touch on: The Persona --what they show the public, their image in front of the camera, the love they have for their fans and, and as you discovered, the touch of darkness in the seemingly romantic and happy love The Shadow -- the darkness that comes with what they do, the fear of losing what they love to do, the negative sides of fame and how taxing it is to be more than one person, and the painful history of bts reaching success The Ego -- their pride, their choice to keep moving forward and how despite the hardship and everything they have gone through, they have found themselves and know how to keep moving forward MOTS:7 is a revisit of their history, and they left so many easter eggs for ARMY to find. Like for example, Outro: Ego's instrumental is a remix of Intro: 2 Cool 4 Skool, the first song on their very first album. Interlude: Shadow's remixes Intro: O!RUL8,2?, the first song on their second album, and Intro: Persona remixes Intro: Skool Luv Affair, the first song on their third album and the last album on their School Trilogy. Events referenced in their songs, lyrics that have been repeated, things like Boy With Luv being a reinterpretation of an older song named Boy In Luv, it all just combined together as a beautiful celebration of BTS' history as a seven year old group. The seven being symbolic not only for their time together, the number of members in the group, but also them resigning a seven year contract to continue together.

To add to it, the reference to the 7 is because last year (when the album was released) was the 7th anniversary of BTS, since debut. BTS has said that 7 is a special number for them: 7 members, 7 years since debut, and they wanted to create a really personal and big album. Also, in k-pop there's this kind of "curse" that groups don't last 7 years or more, and BTS wanted to proof that they can and they will....They already celebrated they're 8th anniversary. As a personal opinion: when I heard the album and researched the meaning behind all the songs and lyrics, and watched the interviews and MV, I felt that it was: 1-In a way a statement to everyone else that they know and love each other individually and as a group and they enjoy and want to continue what they have. Also reinforce that BTS is 7 and the love they have for ARMY. 2-In other way, I feel it was kind of a "finally" in the sense of "let's give it more than our all, in case this is our last album", because: a) their contract ended that year (not saying it was not going to be renewed but just mentioning that) b)Jin (the oldest) was supposed to go to mandatory military service at the end of last year, and Suga this year so, it was going to be a while until all of them where together again, if they decided to continue after military service from all the members. The point 1 was reinforced for me when they continued throughout the year to say that they prepared their biggest production so far for the tour and that ARMY needs to see it. and when Suga was away for his surgery and they left a space for him in every single performance and made sure to mention him every chance they could. The point 2 was reinforced after BE, when the law (also known as the BTS law) to allow artist to delay their enlistment only two days before Jin's birthday and due date to enlist (to this day the only artist that can apply to it is BTS, but that's other topic 😅), allowing BTS to remain together more time and have time to decide if they enlist together or by age, as custom. Sorry for the long post. I wrote this late at night, and it might have grammar errors, please excuse those, English is my second language, I'm from Dominican Republic 🇩🇴and a proud ARMY of course 😂💜 PS: Fun fact: I discovered you from your Little Mix reactions. Loved those as well. 🎉

Oh, fun fact: the rap line's songs each sampled an intro from one of their first three albums (their Skool Trilogy). Intro: Persona sampled the intro from Skool Luv Affair (their 3rd album), Interlude: Shadow sampled the intro from O!RUL8,2? (their 2nd album) and Outro: Ego sampled the intro from 2 Cool 4 Skool (their 1st album). As the trilogy was all about confronting and subjugating false "self"s (the persona/shadow/and ego) which they'd each respectively over-inflated and identified with, the call back (I think) was about self-reflection and growth as they attempted to find their true selves.

And to see them have this big success &, at the same time, get stronger, I feel happy for them & it just made me want to protect them. Idk lol. It's a song for us, we're the earth and Jin is the moon that's constantly orbiting us 💜 Another thing, they end with Outro: Ego, because Intro: Persona, Interlude: Shadow, and then Outro: Ego all connect to create the album's narrative. @Sana-cz9ne3 жыл бұрын
@@izzy5908 it's a nice way to look at it. Personally I agree both with you and the comment from op. When he says things like "you're the one who made me" "I can be whatever you want" it's hard to believe that he's talking about his authentic self. It's like he's talking about becoming whatever the fans want, putting on a filter is like putting on a costume to become jimin "the idol" so he can satisfy us. And it's not even filter he chose himself but a filter that he let's us choose. BUT. At the same time. At this point we've gotten to know jimin at least as much as we can as fans. We know that he LIKES to change his style, that whatever he's dressed in, aka whatever filter he puts on, he can embody that filter and truly alter and fit his personality to that style. It doesn't necessarily mean taking away his authenticity because in each filter he is authentic to himself since he becomes that. I think he has embraced having so many sides of him compared to the past and compared to lie which can be understood as hiding away a side of him and feeling helpless. Anyways, filter is a really interesting song that can go both ways or have both meanings at the same time.
@francavetro6193 жыл бұрын
The meaning we got from the performance was another one. At the beginning of his career he wanted to look manly and worked hard to act like a macho and stressed himself for being always at the top and appreciated. Then he learned how to embrace his true self and mix the palette (as he said in the lyrics), he wants to be true to himself and be whoever he wants without limits, so having both "feminine" and "masculine" features. And it's linked to the photoshoot in 2019 where he has a tattoo with the femal and male signs mixed on the arm or hand, i don't remember. And he was able to be this charming and gorgeous person thanks to army's love. So he has so many filters and sides of him to show and with whom attract people

I looked the lyrics up after listening to the it and almost broke down in the middle of Starbucks. This song was saying everything I was feeling towards my younger self, how sorry I was to her for no longer having a dream to chase and how angry and disappointed she would be in me. I was having a tough time when this song came out and was feeling pretty directionless and everything just felt so pointless. The song sounded like 27 year old me's plea to 17 year old me begging for help so she could could cuss me out and kick my butt into gear and help me out of that slump. The more I thought about that, the sorrier I felt to her. BTS once again managed to put my worries into a single song, expressing perfectly how I felt and made me remember that the things I struggle with are valid and not trivial at all and that I'm not alone :)

As Agust D he has 2 self-produced mixtapes: "Agust D" (2016) and "D-2" (2020).I wouldn't say Agust D is agressive, he is very real and deep. As he himself said "I can openly express myself and show a more raw side to myself as Agust D"
@-amel-98963 жыл бұрын
I feel like Agust D is only aggressive in a few songs, specifically the title tracks in music videos, the bsides in the other hand are VERY personal and introspective, but he can be aggressive with it, like in The Last and My Dear Friend, which are both VERY VERY sad and dark songs, but the delivery is like the type of emotional aggressive type, where his voice breaks and he sounds like he is about to cry from it.

Something I feel everyone should know about BTS: they work on songs and structure their albums very consciously and purposefully. There is intention in every choice - from lyrics to composition to breaths to pauses and to the order of songs. Namjoon, who is involved in writing 98% of BTS' songs and has nearly 180 song-writing credits to his name so far, told ARMY once that they're very thankful to us for loving "their children", aka their songs. He's also mentioned how important he considers the structure of albums, that they tell a story, that there is cohesion. They truly consider their music as art and treat it with utmost respect. Without fail, there is purpose behind every song. This is one of the most fundamental reasons as to why they've become so big - they put so much of themselves into their work.

The sea and desert reference comes up frequently in BTS’ discography. It’s probably most distinctive and easy to understand if you listen to BTS’s hidden track ‘Sea’ on the physical album Love Yourself: Her. It really deals with their struggles.

I disagree with interpreting it as "grief"... His dialogue expresses acceptance for his lost/rushed childhood and empowerment about his will, actually. "I accept the sacrifices I've had to do, but I do not regret my decisions, I will have time in the future to do so many things, I still got a lot of life to live", this is the tone.
@nicolinetorres89293 жыл бұрын
Yeah, of course! Sorry, I was half out of my wits at that time I was writing the comment. I meant to say that maybe in that moment, that feeling he's trying to express in the first part of the song is you know, a sense of nostalgia, not grief. I didn't choose my words right HAHAHAHA. Then it transitions to the second part of the song where the lyrics are slowly taking a turn to what I agree with you on, that feeling of acceptance and moving on to what the future and the present has in store for him. Thanks for bringing this to light, Loba!
@lobaetoile84403 жыл бұрын
@@nicolinetorres8929 Your comment was not offensive... I would say it's a common reaction, to feel sad or wonder about how Jungkook may feel sadness or regret in relation to his teenage years... I disagreed because, I do believe that wasn't what he intended to express... I think there was an intention to express self-confidence on his life decisions and hope for the future, self-reassurance... I think that's why the performance is more bold, "grown up" and sensual too; in order to show how he's passionate about his craft and comfortable with his stardom... But, do I undertand what you are trying to say... In any case, you don't need to apologise. PS: sorry for being redundant.

“We are Bulletproof:The Eternal” is indeed a song for the fans. A backstory for this is that RM even said he cried while writing this song. In the beginning, BTS were the underdogs of the industry, they were from a very small company, they were treated so maliciously, were cut out of broadcasts, falsely accused of sajagi, had antis trend no.1 hashtag in Twitter just because they weren’t from a big company and were rising to fame So basically BTS and ARMY has been through SO MUCH throughout their career, which created such a strong bond between BTS and ARMY. BTS’s official First Fan song was actually called “2!3!” which is so sad because it could have been about being thankful for the fans but it was about BTS telling themselves and army’s to let the painful past go and hope for better days(I cried listening to this). So the “we are bulletproof:eternal” song is talking about how much we’ve been through and now “together” we are bulletproof :)

"I know the sea will end up as a desert without you" is a reference to their song "sea" which you should definitely check out! And the "you" they are talking about (in most of the songs) is their fans. Without their fans their sea (fame, riches, ...) will become a desert

Two references you may have missed: 1. "Jamais Vu," is French & is literally the opposite of deja vu. Deja vu is the sensation of something being familiar, although one hasn't actually experienced it before, while jamais vu is the sensation of something being unfamiliar, although it has been encountered previously. 2. Dionysus is the ancient Greek name for the god of wine, excess & art (among other attributes). The Romans called the same god Bacchus. Bonus Fact: Tracks 1-5 are actually re-packaged from their previous mini-album, "Map Of The Soul: Persona." When you mentioned at 41:52 that the last three songs were getting stronger, you were literally referring to the first three new songs from this album. For fans, listening to this album for the first time was incredible! Because we were already familiar with tracks 1-5, "Interlude: Shadow," was a shock to the system (in a good way), setting the stage for the rest of this masterpiece of an album.

Suga's solo work usually goes under his alter ego Agust D and I highly recommend his second and most recent album D-2. It's honestly one of my favorites of the year (and the music video for the track Daechwita is genius imo). While BTS have a ton of artistic freedom as a group, they still have to fit their style, lyrics and message to match what they want to promote as group so Agust D gives him a lot more flexibility to cover his innermost feelings and personal style.

Often when you read the lyrics of some bts songs, you think that they are romantically singing about a significant other, when in reality, it is often dedicated towards the ARMY which gives the song a whole new perspective (for example: mikrokosmos and let go). That is one of the many things that I love about BTS, that they show just as much appreciation and love towards their fans as we do to them.

The number "7" is significant in Korean culture; there are seven of members in BTA; they have performed as BTS for seven years since debut; 'idol' groups still together after seven years is rare; revisited a lot of their older songs and linked to this album; also represents personal and group journey these past years. Needless to say, "7" as a album is intentional as is all of BTS work. Appreciate your enthusiasm to learn, and enjoy your attention to the lyrics and sonics exercised by both the vocalist and the rappers.

In Filter Jimin is kinda calling us out on the fan experience, since we dont know them personaly and only have access to the bits that they show (which is right and healthy since they are so famous there should be boundaries to keep them safe), we as fans end up filling UP the empty spaces with our own dreams and expectations of who they should be (the "filters) and since he has no control over how this goes he is simply addressing that he is very aware of It and almost taunting us to keep going snsnsnsnsnss i think this song shows how self aware they are of how they are seen and their impact in the fans lives. If you see this coment I advise you listen to the audio first and then read the translation on doolset afterwards because the lyrics videos are pretty confusing and misleading sometimes.

I'm just gonna write this comment and continuously add to it as i watch the video - first idk if you noticed but Boy with luv the music video version and the audio version differs the MV version you can hear halsey in the "oh my my" part only and a little in the back singing korean with them but the audio version she sings more in the chorus and also sing korean with them - about dionysus he is the god of fertility and wine as you read and they mentioned "reborn" or "born twice" it's because dionysus was born two times once from his mother's womb and the second is from zeus's thigh. also in korean yeSUL is art and SUL is alcohol so they're playing with words saying they're drunk on art! BTS's wordplay is just insane. and the amazing high note you asked about at the end was jin! - Shadow: this is purely from my interpretation of the lyrics but from what I understood and based on their older songs i've heard and read the lyrics to, the " I wanna be a rapstar, i wanna be the top -----" they're like the wishes of his past younger self like these are the things he wanted and dreamed of and then the rest of the song is like his pov or his feelings after he became this successful he realized how lonely and scary it is at the top and how after all these years it took him to get here all of that can go down in an instant that's why he said "his leap can be his fall" or "his plunge" which is sad. BTS always said how tiring for their mental health the fame is and it made them anxious at times and i'm happy they are open about these type of topics with us. - Black swan: now this is one of my favorite songs by them it's so good but the lyrics is just sad. for black swan BTS made this song based on a quote said by the iconic dancer Martha graham which is " A dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing and the first death is the more painful" they took this quote and applied it on them saying that they're scared of losing their love for music and performing saying how it would kill them it would feel like their first death and the more painful one at that and it shows how much love and appreciation BTS has for music, performing and art overall and it makes me respect them so much more - UGH!: honestly this would be a little hard for me to explain if you want the perfect explanation watch dkdktv's video of UGH! explained by koreans. but anyways yeah i'm gonna give a brief explanation of only what i know which is UGH in korean the song name is more like "ook" which is when someone gets angry and lose temper all of a sudden and in this song they're criticizing the society especially the internet keyboard warriors and they're saying that it's okay to get angry it's a human nature and feeling BUT instead of putting that anger towards celebrities and people you don't and are jealous of put that anger into good use like fight for a cause fight for something good instead of attacking someone. especially in korea they like attacking celebrities for the smallest things and a lot of celebrities end up taking their lives so in j-hope's line he says that this misdirected anger can cause someone pain or it can make someone hopeless or it can become a bad memory for that someone or it can take someone's life... also after that suga in a mocking way says " what's wrong with getting hate you make so much money why are you whining you should put up with that" and RM says "if you made me do it i would endure it all" these are all things the koreans netizens LOVE saying to celebrities because to them these celebs make so much money so they deserve it it's only "fair" and these celebs have to put up with different types of slanders and accusations because they make money and that if these celebs put these netizens in their places they would endure it because they would make money it's so so sad and fvcked up how people not just koreans think of some celebrities and people with platform in general. Friends: Jimin and tae (v) are besties literally they were born on the same year as well and they went to high school together and they knew each other for like 10 years now since all 7 members have been living together for that long and their friendship is just so so cute!! the dumpling incident is when they fought over when to eat the dumplings tae said before practice because he was so hungry (he was filming a drama as well at the time so he was super hungry because he didn't have time to eat properly due to busy schedule) and jimin said after practice with the rest of the members so they got into an argument about that and then i think they made up two weeks later they now think of how funny of an incident it was because it was like in 2016 it was long ago lol. the dreamcatcher was because tae had a nightmare and he went to jimin's room to sleep because he got scared and the next day jimin got him a dreamcatcher saying it's to have only good dreams, the little pinky thing jimin has a really small pinky it's cute so they joke about it a lot - WABP: the eternal: yes this song is for fans, idk if you know but BTS stands for BulleTproof boy scouTs so yeah they have bulletproof in their name so when they first debuted in 2013 as bangtan sonyeondan (the meaning in korean) koreans made fun of their name that's why in joon's verse he says " our name, that everyone laughed at, that we were once embarrassed by this is a proof made of iron, bulletproof" meaning they were embarrassed of it and hated it but now they take pride in it also the whole song have mentions of people hating them like "throw stones at me" " we're not afraid anymore" it's because BTS are literally the most hated group the second they debuted the hate against them was strong for no reason at all just because they came from a small and broke company but still had decent success so bigger companies considered a threat to their groups so the industry literally blocked them on tv, cut their performances and literally humiliated them on tv because they were doing well without big companies and media backup which hurted their pride so a lot of false accusations were thrown against bts to the point they had to go to court to clear their name and keep in mind they were super young at that time jungkook was literally 15/16 and had to go through all that it messed with them mentally now they're the biggest group in the world so koreans the public loves and respect them NOW but kpop stans still have this weird and deep hatred for them which is super weird. also even tho they're the biggest artists in korea (and the world obviously) but because they made their small and broke company one of the biggest and richest companies in korea and did that without needing the media support so the media in korea have a thing against them so they don't report most of their achievements but if a singer from the big companies (now they're smaller than bts's company but they still have stronger media support because connections) wears a limited edition shoes or bag you would see that in the front pages it's messed up really :( also bts have two older songs that were made in their debut year which are bulletproof pt:1 and pt:2 ig you can say the eternal is the conclusion of these songs in a way. lmaooo i wrote a lot i just had to explain some of the songs, also final note yes 2020 was their 7th year together that's why the album is named 7 and that's why there were a lot of mentions of 7 years, this album is amazing i really love it. also the other album most people say they like is love yourself: tear all their albums are insanely good tho. and omg I really love Zayn as well!!

26:45 it was Jin doing the high note Actually not many of who reacted to this song as a non-fan noticed that! this album made me cry, smile, hyped....In general, it made me proud of them

they're been using the sea/desert metaphor since their song "sea" (which was an hidden track in the "love yourself: her" album), so i recommend reading the lyrics to that song if you want to understand the full context :) they've used this metaphor a few times since then and they keep adding to it each time, it's really interesting! (the lyrics are on doolset's website)

Both belts in Dionysus were Jin. The highnote and the one at the end.

The sadest thing about 7 is that a whole tour based on that album had to be cancelled. Can you imagine all these gems of songs live? We got an online concert which was great and pulled millions in but of course couldn't replace live, and the boys already worked so hard to prepare :-( You really need to watch them live, they are one of the best performers and the only artists that I have seen being like super grateful for their fans. They might be at the top but they don't take none of that for granted. In nearly all of their concerts at least one of them is shedding tears in their speech. They feel all of that really deep and we feel with them.

When this album dropped I was still a Baby Army and so many of the references and meaning flew right over my head. As time went on the entire album grew in meaning. I Highly suggest coming back to this album in a few months time when you've gotten more history and well, so much will make sense And just be all the richer for knowing.

Since you mentioned Agust D, today is actually Agust D anniversary! SUGA aka Agust D released his first self-produced mixtape 5 years ago

Once you get to know the members, you will also understand Ego’s positivity because J-Hope (aka Hobi) is known as the sunshine of the group so that sound is 100% him and I think that was the perfect way to end such an emotional and personal album.

Oh yeah, I've been waiting for this! And yes, I recommend you watch the MVs separately, if you put in from the MV intro (which are these little balls, you will see) ,Hybe doesn't block the video, so you wouldn't have to worry about making cuts or having to pause on KZbin

Actually all of them, all of the songs are for the fans. The message, the confess. It's for us and we really thankful to them because they opened up with us and struggle together but at the end of the day, we go through all of them.

Fun fact: Map of the soul 7 was the best selling album of 2020 worldwide, and Be album was number 4.

the mention of 7 summers/winters/springs in “friends” and “we are bulletproof : the eternal” is because when this album was released, it had been 7 years since their debut. the 7 is a very special number to them and this album shows it by including it in the title as well. so it’s like it’s been 7 years as a 7 member band and the album is map of the soul 7.
