Oh, I'm so stoked for this! I personally think LY: Her is quite overlooked since it's followed by one of their best, LY: Tear, but i think it holds itself pretty well as a marvelous pop record and it's a strong opener for the trilogy and it's themes. Pied Piper is a very interesting song. Ofcourse its laced with double entendres. Its most surface meaning is its almost a cute little tough-love reminder to us (armys) to make sure we dont use them as excuses to neglect important things (work, school) haha they always want to make sure they are a positive influence on us, and not a negative one. So its kinda like a toughlove reminder.

I wanted to comment a bit on Go Go. I know from your reaction that you didn't really get much from the lyrics because they seem very typical? shallow? I was like that too when I first read the lyrics! It surprised me because it seemed un-BTS like in terms of lyricism BUT when they had the press conference for this album, they shared the true meaning behind this song which IS very BTS lol. Every album they have what they call a "socially conscious" song where they give commentary on something they have observed or felt strongly about. They explained that GoGo was that for Love Yourself: Her; its a very sarcastic take on the mindset youth have on the value of money. All we want to do is squander our money when we have it and to party, all while excusing our behavior by saying that we only live once. Since learning that, Go Go has been one of my favorite songs from them!
@taesfilter30263 жыл бұрын
i also think they're trying to highlight the situation the current youth is going through; our economy is so destroyed at this point, we don't see a future for ourselves and end up acting out, not having a care in the world when spending all our hard earned cash. i definitely think there are multiple ways to dissect gogo!
@karik.82913 жыл бұрын
@@taesfilter3026 Yeah, there are definitely several layers here. Depending on who you ask, it's either ... 1) ... a fun, slightly superficial party song about the joy of spending money, 2) ... poking fun at youth culture, and how it glorifies senseless spending, or 3) ... a pretty biting criticism of the current economic situation that keeps young people from building up wealth. In this context, the song basically encourages (ironically or not) young people to enjoy the small things they CAN afford without feeling guilty, and without despairing about tomorrow. You could make a pretty good argument for either one, and they can be seen as complimenting or contrasting one another. I liked an explanation on KZbin ("BTS Go Go Explained by a Korean Fan") that argues for the last interpretation. In this context, the line Michael was wondering about ("[money] turns to sh*t if you keep saving it in fear") can mean that under the current circumstances - inflation and low wages - the little money you can save will only become less and less valuable. So it makes sense to invest it into the admittedly somewhat minor things that can help you enjoy your life or further your dreams. Or we could circle back around and read it as a description of how, in this situation, the material things you're able to buy are basically just band-aids on a wound, an empty way to make daily life more bearable through consumption. Fun, right? :D

The “Love Yourself” series is a trilogy. The theme of album “Her” describes the beginning of every happy relationship, hence the overall upbeat tone of the whole album, but the next album will get darker. Some interesting points about a few songs: “Pied Piper” is BTS roasting ARMYs! The lyrics of “interpret our music videos later”, “go do your homework” are pretty straightforward and playful diss of the fans. “Go Go” might seem out of place in the love-heavy album, but it is on brand of BTS’ usual social critical commentary of consumerism. They have a song like this in every album/era. For “Mic Drop”, you should also check out the Steve Aoki remix which was promoted as a new BTS single after album release. Same melody but new beat, and a bit more English lyrics. Very fun to compare and contrast the two songs.

GoGo is such a genius satirical song contrasting the brightness and fun of the sound and performance (as well as internet slang and memes) with the actual harshness of the message within it. This song is talking about how desperate and resigned our generation is, left with no future, so might as well spend the little we have in the moment to feel a little better, like we're "alive" (hence yolo) bc there's no use trying to save up when society sucks you dry. I suggest reading muish's blog post about this song with the translation

To understand mic drop, one thing that you have to keep in mind is that BTS is an outlier even in their own society, in their own music industry they are an outlier. Their rise to global fame coming from where they were,a small, bankrupt company, could be considered a miracle. Every year, there are thousands of kpop groups debuting and only 1% make it. And they are usually from the big three companies: JYP, SM, YG. It's not just abt the talent but abt the power that would back them up, influence over radio, tv companies, variety shows, producers who would bring these idols to their shows or dramas to market them, to give them more time to appear on TV. BigHit (BTS's company) didn't have that. BTS debuting on one of the music shows? Lucky chance, an opening because someone canceled. But mostly they are cut and pushed out of shows. No one wants to put them in their shows and if they did, they were used as jokes, often disrespected. Add to that idols or boy groups/girl groups are not really thought of artists, they are manufactured dolls that exist to look pretty, sing and dance. BTS started off as a hip hop group, they sang abt how society pressures the youth and crush their dreams before they could even think abt having dreams. Already there was a push back against the image and message that they presented. Suga and RM came from the underground rap scene, and they were accused of selling out, and had their share of fighting against toxic masculinity. Anyway, since BTS didn't have the kind of media backing that groups that come from big company, BTS's had the idea of using KZbin and Twitter to promote the boys. And it worked. So now the media is pissed that BTS is getting their fame and success without them being able to profit off of them and boy, were they stingy abt BTS success. This song is a response to all of that! To the naysayers, and niypickers and haters. This was their last goodbye to those negative people. Personally I love how BigHit is so petty when handling problems: you don't want our boys to be on your show? That's fine, we'll make our own show on KZbin! You don't want to work with us on this business idea? That's fine, we'll buy a gaming company, a media company, a graphic films company to handle all our artwork and extra businesses we want to work on. Nah, we're not gonna sign to a major foreign label, we'll just do a distribution deal, and oh, let's also buy a major foreign label as well, just in case. What? You're going to write 💩💩💩 abt our boys on your magazine. Okay, we're making our own magazine, streaming service, fansites. We're buying other entertainment companies as well, MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. HYBE is an empire built on the backs of BTS, and the original staffs and boss-man.

You should take note that the whole album series is a series and it takes that aspect seriously because of how the story weaves throughout each album. Like for example, right now the whole album is focusing on 'Her', the other person; to the point of literally hiding yourself for that person which is not necessarily the best thing to do when you're in a relationship. You'll see this in the Tear album and how this kind of 'love' is unhealthy and in the end, damages your love for yourself.

Im sorry for the long comment 🙏🏻 I would like to share some points on the comments you made for this album 😁 Fellow ARMYs if I’m wrong please correct me!! ‼️ •In Serendipity, when Jimin says “Tri Color Cat” it is actually referring to a Calico Cat, this is a cat breed in which the female is more common than the male, so he saying he’s “her calico cat” he’s saying he is very rare and unique. •In the song DNA it is in fact Jungkook doing rap with SUGA! Jungkook used to rap more in their early songs 😁 •Pied Piper is actually a song for ARMY, but its more like a call out 😂 they say “focus on your test, stop watching my videos” but at the same time they say “you cant get away from me and you know it” and thats why they say “Im here to save you, Im here to ruin you” because fans gets easily distracted with anything BTS related 😂 •The Skit from the BBMAs was when they won Top Social Artist Award, and they kinda spoiled there was something (an album trilogy, and later a song too) called Love Myself-Love Yourself. They won the award before they even announced the release of this album (I believe). •MIC Drop was actually inspired by Former President Barack Obama. RM was watching him on a speech in which at the end he said Mic Drop and literally dropped the mic in the podium 🤣 this song is really a flex, especially its Steve Aoki Remix which is CHEFF KISS but I’ll let you react to it when you listen to their Love Yourself: Answer Album, the third in this trilogy. •GoGo is lowkey a criticism to society. In South Korea, life is very expensive and many young people live to work (not work to live) and save money for “the future” but the stress is that bad that many end up in suicide among other mental issues. The struggle is even deeper than that but they have spoken about social issues and criticized them in other songs. That’s why they say in the song, spend the money you have now and do what you wanna do before its too late. Its like going against what society tells you to do to be happy and do what actually will make you happy. Some details as well! ✨ •RM upgraded his name from Rap Monster, as he said he doesnt see himself as a monster anymore for he has learned to love himself, so he mentioned that probably RM now stands for Real Me :) •Everytime SUGA is about to rap in a song, you’ll hear him whisper SUGA in the background, just pay attention and you’ll see! •Jhope also started shouting his own name before he enters on a song, saying HOPE WORLD, which is also the name of his Mixtape. GREAT REACTIONS!! I love every time you react to BTS because you really give them a chance to know what they speak about and what they stand for 💜 Edit: Typo

The Love Yourself series is represented by the following phrase: ‘起承轉結’, which is a style of writing classical Chinese, Japanese, and Korean stories and poems. ‘起承轉結’ - where 起 translates to ‘introduction’ (Represented by "Wonder"), 承 to ‘development’ (Represented by "Her"), 轉 to ‘twist/conflict’ (Represented by "Tear"), and finally, 結 to ‘conclusion’ (Represented by "Answer"). You'll see the entire love yourself journey going through all 4 of these aspects in the final compilation album of the series, "Love Yourself: Answer". I know it might sound complicated, but once you've gone through it, all of this extra information will help you appreciate the planning of this trilogy of albums better. :)

REALLY????🤔 Maybe it's because the characters are tiny for me and I can't see them properly, but I could just about swear that those are the characters that Latinized translate into H.Y.Y.H., and while I don't remember the words/phrase represented, translated to The Best Moments In Life, which was the series before Love Yourself. I also understood Love Yourself series to be LY:Her, LY:Tear, and LY: Wonder which was repackaged/replaced by LY:Answer,a two disc compilation that included several rockin' remixes and extended versions. I intend no hate or ill will, & I'm happy to be corrected if I'm actually wrong, as I learned so much from the comment sections when I was a baby ARMY and know how important it is to not teach misinformation. Sorry for the super long comment, lol. 💜
@naffy1132 жыл бұрын
@@WonderingWildWanderingRose I'm not sure about the first part as I'm not fluent in Korean or those characters, but you can find those characters beside the album titles and I remember BTS explaining it through press conferences and interviews. The release order was Her, Wonder, Tear & Answer, but it's not in order of the story arc. (Story arc is Wonder, Her, Tear & Answer) Answer did not replace Wonder. Wonder was released as the Euphoria short film. LY: Answer shows the full story arc; so Euphoria & Trivia Just Dance is the "Wonder" part where you discover a love; Serendipity & Trivia Love shows the "Her" part where the love develops; Singularity & Trivia Seesaw is the "Tear" part where the love falls apart and Epiphany and Love Myself is the "Answer" or conclusion part. That's all in CD A. Hope that helps and wasn't too confusing! Sorry for the late reply too.

This album is sadly overlooked a bit as a whole even though I liked it a lot as it has my fav BTS song of all time(Pied Piper) .This is because the sequel to this album is probably of the one of greatest BTS and also Kpop albums of all time which is Love Yourself : Tear,which I cannot wait for you to hear!!!!

21:52 little explanation: It is a word play 날(nal) means 1.me 2.sword. So the line "you have me on your grasp" can also mean "you have sword on your grasp"

you had a very astute observation at the end about the two different pronounciations of tear... that's going to come into play in the outro to love yourself: tear called outro: tear, that song is just.. a lot :) but we do typically pronounce the album title as the tear running down your cheek.

Exactly. I think you can tell when someone actually cares if they do album reactions . So many channels out here react to anything but their music and an occasional music video. They’re missing so much lol

You know what's crazy? While watching your reaction i had this type of epiphany (even if ive been a fan for almost three years and have reheard all their songs a million times with lyrics) and it feels crazy how i didnt notice before but. The albums are supposed to have a storyline. Her is about loving, tear is when love gets toxic and answer is when u understand u need to start by loving yourself first. I somehow understood how all lyrics from this album can coincide to their love for their fans and the love of fans for them. They are talking to a supposed love to represent the beginnings of relationships but somehow when suga sings about putting make up on and the nicest clothes, the mask. Made me think of how they didnt want to do all that in the beginning, only wanted to do music, entered the world of kpop and did most things to please us, the fans. Idk why that blew my mind but basically the three albums are also about them in the world of fame, how they had/have this unconditional love for the fans cause army made them who they are and theyre the universe etc but also i understand their need in the beginning to please us and to forget themselves doing it. And then tear which is when they understand how you cant keep on a mask forever, and finally answer to close it all off about how they should learn to love themselves first. Its actually all so personal to them. This was probably well known by people but idk why i didnt make the connection till now😂
@WonderingWildWanderingRose2 жыл бұрын
That's one of the things I love so much about them, is the multi-layers. People hear/recognize what they are ready to understand. There are people who truly only listen to music for how it hits their eardrums only, because they are only ready for the most superficial relationship. They aren't ready for storylines, metaphors, sarcasm, connections between songs, or that a song can represent multiple kinds of relationships all at once. Like Spring Day... To some it is only about the Sewol Ferry tragedy. Or Jin's "Tonight" is "only" about his pets. Art is the relationship between the receiver and their interpretation of a piece or body of work by an artist. The more the receiver knows about the artist, the more they might be able to see other interpretations/relationships. Long story short, BTS is just Too Cool for Skool😉💜💜

I wish you would react to the music videos as well for each album. They just complete the story telling, the meaning of the song, and concept of the era they are doing and they do it so well. Hell even the performances 🤭 like serendipity or best of me, breathtaking choreographies. But I understand its A LOT. Love your reactions!! ♡

Hey Michael! Thank you for this lovely video. Not sure if you'll see this, but I was really happy to see how much you enjoyed Her and how interested you were in Jhope's verse, so I tried creating a more detailed translation, which will hopefully help you understand the verse a bit better (your intuitive interpretation was pretty spot-on though! I just thought you might enjoy these lyrics): As always, mask on 'Her' who welcomes and greets me with cheers I'm your star, yours and yours only, I shine as if nothing's wrong Yet at the moment where I'm supposed to shine the most, I take my mask off (He talks about masquerading as someone else/this perfect version of himself, only to get tired and give up at what is perhaps the most crucial moment - the moment where he's supposed to shine the brightest, to really live up to 'her' expectations - he takes his mask off) Now a lost star, I lay down my burdens and enjoy the darkness Gone are the lights that would fly at me as if aiming to kill Just following my heart My senses taking the lead, I let myself go Tick tock, the dark is over! (He thinks all is lost - his image is destroyed, he's now a fallen star in her eyes, so he thought why not just be myself, and surrenders himself to the liberating darkness. I found the second line very interesting, though - I always thought it was a reference to his/their fame, with 'her' being perhaps the audience/fans; we only see the side of them they want us to see, and I imagine it must get quite tiring and suffocating sometimes. It seems to me that this part of the verse can also be interpreted as his desire to sometimes break through this mask - this 'persona') I hold onto myself so I can be your best again Love makes people crazy That's right, this is a crazy man's resolution I write myself into an equation that is the truest to who I am I give you my answer, you who are my everything (He tries to find a way to reconcile his desire to please 'her', and the desire to be true to himself) You, who love it in acceptance and I who try harder in kind A night where I discover new meaning through your existence and shine I know now, that even after the darkness ends You'll be the morning to me You woke me up (But to his surprise, she accepts the true him - she loves and embraces his true self, which pushes him to work harder, perhaps to become an even better person. He now sees her in a different light, to him she is now the morning, the light at the end of the tunnel, hope at the end of a long night.) The answer to all my wonder I call you her her Cuz you're my tear tear The answer to all my wonder I call you her her Cuz you're my tear tear

Thank you for your honest reactions and enthusiasm. It has helped me appreciate their artistry more. By the way - Go Go is really a commentary about the young generation’s obsession with materialistic consumerism, spending money to acquire happiness as a means of self fulfillment and the spiritual vacuum it creates. Pied Piper though is another way of using music as a mirror or commentary on one aspect of BTS’ relationship with their fans. Highlighting the flip side of the coin with their fans’ obsession sometimes to the detriment of their daily lives. It is also a commentary on BTS itself: that it cannot stop being the seducing pied piper, as their whole success was built by an engaged and loyal grassroots fandom. Which other group do you know who puts out songs like this??!!!

I cannot wait to see you get further into this Love Yourself series (Her, Tear and Answer). The way these three albums are interconnected with each other is mind-blowing! But like you said they mention this 'darkness' behind the mask, but this album talks about how they bury that darkness to protect this love that they deem 'perfect'. But as you'll see later on in this series, burying those sides of you is not something you should do because then the cracks start to surface. I loved your reaction!

the love yourself series are a whole journey to be honest, i'm so glad you are reacting to them. after this album i hope you react to love yourself: tear and love yourself: answer, you are going to understand sooo much better what is going on with this series, the first one is about loving someone who doesn't know your true self, the second one about understanding that that love is not going to last because you are hidding yourself and the third one you understand that to love someone you need to love yourself first, honestly one of my favorite series.

I'm so glad you're getting to know the Love Yourself series, they are my absolute favorite from them! About the cat thing, in many cultures it is believed that calico cats - also known as tri-color cats, are lucky charms and can bring good fortune to their owners. They are even known as money cats because of the rarity of the males, and were declared the official symbol of fortune in Japan.

The funniest thing bts did was make a song calling Army out on spending too much time on them and having too many pictures of them in our rooms but make that song so addictive and sensual that we have no choice but to be lured in even more. That’s Pied Piper for you

I’m sure you’ve noticed by now, but their songs bring up the same subjects a lot (you’ve pointed out destiny and fate already) but they bring up the desert and ocean often too. BTS are actually super big on fate, like they're super strong believers so it comes up a lot in their music! They've said multiple times (and even have a song about it- Heartbeat) that they (BTS) were destined to meet no matter what even if they didn't end up in the group. That no matter their paths in life, their lives would always be interconnected. It's so beautiful honestly.

This album is love songs, Tear is break up songs; although that is simplifying it a lot, since it’s more like losing yourself in a relationship until you no longer recognize yourself and that realization makes everything fall apart. And answer is songs about learning to love yourself first, enough that you won’t change yourself for anybody. So it’s a trilogy. A journey through the different types or maybe different phases of love.
