You seemed to have glossed over the connection with Ultra. For those that don't know, Ultra Comics is the Empty Hand which is a metaphor for a bored reader. The Oblivion Machine is you getting bored reading and doing something else. The multiverse only ends when the Empty Hand decrees, because that's the same point you (the audience) would stop reading comic books.

It was established that the empty hand was each and every reader of the Multiversity comic when we close the book, so yeah like the one above all the empty hand is stupid powerful because it's the end of all characters story, the real creepy part of this series is the haunted comic book which is just a trap for the gentry and the empty hand, it urges you not to read it effectively ending the hero's story (but of course you read it until the end and the reader kinda saves the day, but the hero warns that the reader has been infected with the gentry. I love this 4th wall braking stuff.

If the presence was a comic stand in for the DC writers, then the Empty Hand is the physical manifestation of the reader when he finishes a story and closes the book longing for another story. Hence the phrase "my hand is empty"
