In this talk, Laura offers us a window into the cumulative toll that can occur when we are exposed to the suffering, hardship, crisis or trauma of humans, other living beings, or the planet itself. Held within a larger context of systematic oppression and liberation theory, we’ll dive into what gets hard and how to work toward reconciling it both individually and collectively.
Laura van Dernoot Lipsky is the founder and director of the Trauma Stewardship Institute and author of Trauma Stewardship: An Everyday Guide to Caring for Self While Caring for Others. She has worked directly with trauma survivors for 28 years, including survivors of child abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, acute trauma of all kinds, and natural disasters. Laura has been active in community organizing and movements for social and environmental justice and has taught on issues surrounding systematic oppression and liberation theory.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Excellent. Well done Laura. I'm a trauma therapist and even though I work somaticly and don't have clients go into a ton of detail (unless they can stay resourced while doing so) I reached my limit for hearing about abuse. So important to recognize this is normal.

Laura was transparent and helpful to those of us who try to help others who are hurting. It also helps counselors realize their need for self-care. Thanks, Laura.

So so good! "We have a shared ethic of doing no harm. If you are numb you will not be able to gauge whether or not you are doing harm." (16:15) Tuning in to ourselves, and taking care of ourselves, allows us to be present for those we seek to serve and allows us to see and counter oppressive systems.

9:34 Seeing all of this laid out is so priceless if you have a open mind and want to improve & learn about yourself. God bless the internet and the age of information, imagine if all the generations of the last century had access to this kind of insight and where open and curious enough to explore it and humble enough to accept it and make a effort to change..
