I actually don't think it needs a timejump. I think they don't have to make a second season next year. They could wait 2-3 years and then the child actors will be teenagers anyway. They already said in interviews that the second season would be more like a sequel series. So this is more like an 8 hour movie and you don't make movie sequels the next year.
@e84fresh8 жыл бұрын
It would be cool if they came up with a whole different story but keeping the same 80s time frame, style, etc.

Kids in Goonies swear quite a bit - I felt like the kids swearing was actually a throwback to Amblin rather than a departure. Now-a-days, if you see a kid swearing on a TV/movie, it's done for outlandish humor ("Look at the 5 year old dropping the F-bomb! blahahahaha") which is totally lame. Here, it felt like normal and natural - like, kids their age are going to swear, and they're not doing it for humor in this show, but for authenticity. Also, please god don't let the Duffer Brothers get sucked into Marvel/DC/Disney... I think it would be a terrible waste of talent.

They should stick to the show. They're clearly invested in the idea. They wrote a 30 page document explaining what the upside down was and all its rules like why there's one monster etc. We know barely anything about it yet and there's more to be explored.

I just love those 'painted' posters à-la Indiana Jones / Goonies, it always brings up something eye catching and warm to me.
@crowleyswhitehorse8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. When I saw it I thought surely it was done by Drew Struzan, the artist responsible for the original Indiana Jones and Goonies posters - along with Star Wars, Back to the Future, Blade Runner, First Blood and MANY others. In the 80s, if you saw a great, hand-painted film poster - there was an excellent chance it was a Struzan. Turns out it was done by an artist named Kyle Lambert - he cites Struzan as one of his primary inspirations for the work. Great stuff.

I really love what you pointed out with Steve. When I started this show I positively loved it but the one of the things that I was slightly disappointed with was that Nancy's 'love interests' as you could say were unfolding as one of the most tiring stereotypes. (Spoilers) We had Steve - the obnoxious 'bad' boy jock who was most likely only fueled by lust and would later be revealed to be an asshole. Then we had Jonathan - the angsty but sweet, misunderstood loner who would be the one Nancy would end up with. That specific trope had always been so irritating to me and I was so positive that by the end of the show, Steve, in a fit of obnoxious fury, would die either by his own stupidity or at the hands of the monster. But then, surprisingly, he didn't. He told off his friends for being assholes, admitted he was being one as well, tried to make amends with Jonathan, and when given a chance to escape from death, he went back and saved both Nancy and Jonathan. Then to top it all off, he and Nancy actually ended up together and I loved every bit of it. It was just so refreshing that they turned that trope upside-down. I really hope if they get a second season that they won't turn Nancy, Steve, and Jonathan into an angsty love triangle or break Nancy and Steve up. It was just really refreshing to see that the athletic, popular guy didn't also have to be the bad guy, ya know?

I loved everything about this show! The simplicity, writing, cast, etc. The thing I liked the most though is how good the child actors were and how relatable they are. I was genuinely surprised when they cursed because it rarely happens in media (the only one I can think of is Stand By Me), which as a 14 year old I don't entirely get because it happens so often. I really appreciated how they actually had the kids act like kids instead of darling angels who never do anything wrong.

This is probably my new favorite Netflix series. I'm going to make one complaint though and this is a real nitpick. I think you nailed it in terms of the length of the season. 8 episodes definitely allowed brisk pacing, the tightly weaved storylines, there was very little downtime in the story, everything came together beautifully. This is easily my best piece of entertainment this year. That includes tv, movies and games. Out of nowhere it came for me and utterly blew me away and I'm so happy it did yet utterly sad I can't experience it freshly again. Theory WITH spoilers: I believe Eleven created the Upside Down. The Hawkins Lab was unsure about the portal, as was Dr. Brenner. They were experimenting w/ remote viewing, and Eleven's fears and powers led her to unintentionally populate and then open the upside down. She said as much. The monster was a conjuring of her nightmares, and once the gate was open it could "reproduce" both itself and the world w/ hosts such as Barbara and Will. At least that's what made sense to me.

Happy to see so many people from so many different walks of life connecting to this show. The acting was impeccable but I think the Duffers deserve some of the credit for that. It wasn't blind luck that they found such a perfectly put together cast. They're responsible for unifying them to each other and to the moments they are in and they obviously did a good job. While the atmosphere and 80's set was fantastically done, most reviews I've seen have focused on the characters and acting. I hope Season 2 (and a likely bigger budget) doesn't affect the focus on what makes this show successful.

Absolutely loved Stranger Things, just finished it and I loved every minute of it. I loved the old school feel to it, though I did get more of a 70s feel from it haha. I loved all the little homages to 70/80s pop culture, like the movie posters, technology and even some of the hairstyles and attitudes that existed back then. However Grace, you should be a little more careful with how you explain some things, I noticed you calling Eleven's powers telepathy, but it was more Psychokinesis than that. I also think you're opinion that things should be made more diverse isn't necessarily bad but you don't need it in literally everything nowadays, in my opinion having the same diverse characters and patterns in movies and shows is starting to feel too contrived and patronising. But Stranger Things doesn't go overboard with this, which I'm pleased about. Without a doubt one of the best shows I've seen so far, I hope it continues to be great and can't wait for season 2.

Anybody else theorize that the monster(Demigorgon, whatever) is a necessity in the "upside down" so for example when Eleven kills the monster she takes its place and becomes the monster. The monster balances out the ecosystem of the "upside down" so there always has to be one. Hopper is just leaving food there for Eleven to find when she ventures into our world. It might be a little farfetched though.

Any sequel has got to keep the kids and build on their chemistry. Time jumping and changing at least five actors would be starting all over again, with no certainty that either individually or as a group they would work as well. I loved this show so much! I think it's the best thing Netflix has ever done. I watched all eight episodes in one day and it was the best tv viewing experience I've ever had. I am very much looking forward to season 2.

Well, I guess the good news is that the defenders could have this feel too since it is going to be another 8 episode series too. An 8 hour superhero team up movie could be pretty epic

Anyone else notice that the particular episodes that seemed to be imitating famous scenes from 80's films had a poster of that film in the background? Jaws was a poster in the background of episode 3 (same episode as the pool scene with Barbara). There was also of course Evil Dead, The Thing, etc. And then of course the first episode directly references Poltergeist.

My brother sends me a text reading " Watch Stranger Things on Netflix". I watched episode 1... then 2... then 3... and so on. 30 hours later (including work and sleep) I've watched the entire series. It's awesome. I want more.

Dear Grace, it is a treat for me to listen to you talk. Doesn't matter what the topic.

Grace, did you do a review of episodes 1-4 like you did for Season 2? I'm way behind and just finished episode 5 of Season 1 (didn't watch this review!). I can't find it in your profile. If you didn't -- no worries -- but if you did, can you or someone else provide a link? Thanks!
