Thank you so much for this video. I thought I finally had the vowels down then heard the qamets pronounced as an "o" and thought I lost my mind. So this explains it! I like the history part in it! (How Hebrew evolved its vowels.) What I miss, is what the other punctuation symbols are, which are used in digital Hebrew texts such as in Sefaria. (Such as for example the ° above a letter.)

Very well done, and I learned a few things, but one thing you didn't mention about segol is that when there are two consecutive (segolim or segolot?), the first one gets the accent. However, about this I'm wondering what happens when there is a silent letter (such as heh with a shva), is the first segol still accented? Thanks. Again, very good teaching.

Thanks so much. You should perhaps point out that your pronunciation of many of the vowels is distinctly American, and is different from the non-Western original Hebrew pronunciation. For example the letter yod should be pronounced as the oo in wood, and not like the o in yoga. It can be confusing for those who are not cogniscent of your strong American accent. Thanks again

got a ? why is the vowel " U " some time written as a vav with a dot (dalet) to the left OR 3 ... dots slanted down??? the only thing ive found us since they are spoken as the vowel "U" it is a usage of a branch of Judaism tradition

The answer is explained in section 1.3 on vowel letters. It depends on the consonantal text that the Masoretes inherited. If the u-type vowel was written as a vav, they put a dot to the left of it to be a shureq; if there was no vav, they wrote the vowel as a qibbuts (the 3 dots slanted down) under the previous consonant.

Actually, the "Vav's" original sound was a W, not a V, and it's original name was "Waw". Somewhere in time a bunch of Hebrew speaking traditions were influenced by foreign languages, and so the Waw started being known as Vav, and the sound it produced was also changed (some say it could have started around the Ashkenazi communities, or at least, some judaeo-european communities). Currently, most (if not all) serious studies accept that the Vav was actually Waw and its sound was that of a W, not a V, at least as far as Biblical Hebrew goes. In modern Hebrew is ok to keep naming it Vav and pronouncing it as V, since that's the official name and sound of the letter nowadays. Once you know and understand this, it is pretty easy to understand why the Waw worked as a vowel (and many other things regarding the letter), contrary to the "v" sound, which makes no sense at all in most scenarios (if not all).

Please tell me if it is correct to pronounce יהושע yehoshua as “yehusha”...i dont think it can be done in biblical hebrew...yet someone has published an entire bible, and instead of using Yeshua’s name in the new testament spelled ישוע ...they have deliberately misspelled and misspronounced it as yehuSHA from the OT yehoshua/joshua....i read his blog and he can not give any reasoning or evidence for his change of this name...he just expects you to not know hebrew enough to believe and follow him... its in his ET Cepher bible...i have contacted him and refuted this....no intelligent response. Can you please answer this question for me...seeing that you understand the history of this language.

The correct pronunciation is Yeshua and not Yehoshua, as Yeshua in Hebrew directly means "salvation". To change it to Yehoshua takes the meaning away from Yeshua, as Yehoshua means "God is Deliverance".

The vowel markings are just another thing Hebrew linguists borrowed from Arabic. Vowel markings in abjads didn’t exist until after the Quran was written and people all over the world were learning Arabic but struggled to read without the vowels because they were not Arab scribes.

I consider this harmful to anyone learning Hebrew. You have a heavy American or Canadian accent, and your vowel placement so different to Hebrew, I could barely recognize the letters you mentioned. Anyone who used these videos to learn would surely end up sounding American? Also, the video is called "Biblical Hebrew" but you're rejecting Biblical pronunciation and going with modern pronunciation, which isn't helpful to anyone learning Biblical Hebrew.
