I've been in a similar situation to Liz. I went back to my ex multiple times even though he was actively cheating (that I know of because he tells me about the dates after he's gone on them), and he mentally and emotionally abused me for years. Every time we break up and I try to leave and move on, then he starts saying shit like "being with you just feels so right" and love-bombing me. I even said the same thing Liz said, "you just don't know him, there's this wonderful side of him that you don't see (when he's not being abusive)." Took me years of therapy to finally get enough self-respect to realize, I don't deserve any of that. I truly believed he loved me, that's why I kept going back even though I suffered so much. But someone once told me, "if it's more bad times than good, then maybe it's not worth it. You might want to think about that." That sentence got me thinking and realizing that if he did love me, he wouldn't hurt me so much. No one can save/help Liz, I know because I've been there. She won't listen to anyone else because she still believes "He loves me, no one else will love me the way he does, so I will stay." Only she can save herself, which is the sad truth.

I had a similar on/off relationship that was verbally/emotionally abusive. I had the "this isn't love" moment in our last fight, and finally got the willpower to leave him a couple weeks later. He never saw it coming. I had been telling him for years at that point that he couldn't just keep treating me badly and expect me to stay. I guess he thought he could do exactly that. I found out later he'd been 3 days away from proposing. I'm glad I didn't have to tell him no to that. It would have gone worse than the regular breakup.

My best bud was in this weird back and forth with a girl who was clearly emotionally unavailable but he just kept trying to make it work even after she would like block him and then unblock him for no reason.
