Beginner-intermediate guitar players make many mistakes early on!!! I can relate. Lets bust out of the beginner-intermediate rut. Take your guitar playing to the next level. In this intermediate guitar lesson we will target the notes in the chords (chord tones) and create movement to those target notes. We can easily build a blue rock guitar solo using this technique. My biggest regret playing the guitar was not learning basic theory early on. To move forward in our guitar playing we need to know the fretboard, know the notes of the chords and the notes of the pentatonic and major scales! With this knowledge, we can learn many other techniques very easily. And have a lot more confidence as we played the guitar. This is an intermediate lead guitar lesson, but a beginner will certainly get some direction and knowledge from this lesson video. No matter where you’re at in your guitar journey start focusing more and more on using chord tones as you play rhythm and lead guitar. And fretboard knowledge is key to continually move forward in your learning of the instrument. Because once you have confidence in the notes that you’re playing, you will learn at a much faster rate. It’s exciting to make new connections on the fretboard. Lead guitar playing isn’t just about the pentatonic scale. It’s about having a connection with the chords that you are playing. Take the time to learn the names of the notes that you were playing. To get to the advanced guitar player level. You definitely need to know the fretboard. I think we all are lazy that way, but it’s so important. To improve your guitar playing skills you need some basic theory and this is where it starts. I’m glad you’re on the guitar playing journey with me and my channel. If you already know some chords and scales and want to level up your guitar playing, then Rustys guitar is for you. I’m focused on the intermediate player, but beginners will definitely level up. They’re playing also when watching and learning for my videos. I love the blues rock style of guitar playing. And I know a lot of you do also. You can take these guitar lessons and use them as framework to play any style that you have in your head. let’s keep working on these guitar techniques together. Let’s have fun playing some blues rock guitar. Beginner intermediate guitar players definitely make many mistakes early on in their guitar playing journey. I have made many mistakes myself. But the biggest one is not learning the guitar fretboard early on. This is by far the most important tool for your guitar playing. No matter what you learn on guitar, if you know the fretboard, you will learn it faster and it will sink into your soul and brain much deeper. I so much regret not learning this early on. A good starting place is learning, the route notes of the scales and chords that you use all the time. Then learning the notes around those Scales and Chords. Then you can keep expanding from there. You don’t have to learn the fretboard all at once. You’ll be amazed how quick he will learn other techniques if you already know the notes on the fretboard! check out my biggest regret, and my many mistakes I made as a beginner, intermediate guitar player early on. I know some of you have made the same mistakes in your guitar playing. We don’t have to stay stuck in a rut in our guitar playing. In this video lesson, I will show you several ways you can move forward today! easy, simple steps to level up your lead and rhythm guitar playing. We all want to improve our guitar playing. Try to learn something new every day. And if you do this every day, you will creep into the advanced level in no time at all. Using chord tones in your guitar playing. Sounds like a scary and difficult task, but I will show you some very easy ways to put them into your guitar playing today. Your blues rock solos will start to come alive. Thank you for checking out this beginner intermediate guitar lesson. hopefully this lead guitar lesson is helpful. As we first learned chords and scales, we neglect learning the notes of the fretboard, the notes of the chords, and the notes of the scales that we use. It’s such a big mistake. We should be doing that as soon as we pick up the guitar. Then it will become second nature. If I could do it over again, I would learn these things right away along with learning, Chords and Scales.

30 seconds into the video I knew what he was about to teach will be a game changer for everyone that doesn't know what he's about give you probably one of the most important lessons he can give a beginner because folks you hear people say I've been playing for 20 or 30 years right so have I but if you were playing or practicing wrong man did you ever waste valuable time. Anyway I heard him open with the biggest regrets and I already knew so if you're just starting or think you know pay attention watch this video over and over.

Firstly, this is the longest write up I have ever seen accompanying a video on You Tube. This is a great lesson & an eye-opener. I just wish I could turn back time to reclaim those decades I've wasted noodling around on my guitar and not getting anywhere. I needed this lesson 40 years ago! Thank you so much for this. This one needs to be viewed over & over to extract all the information you have included. I thought I'd never get out of the rut of being an intermediate player, but now there's light at the end of the tunnel. Keep 'em coming Rusty.

A left a comment early on that I felt the major scale should be the starting point in learning to play lead - I now recognize there were some pretty significant gaps in my knowledge base and that is what was holding me back, not the fact that I started with the minor pentatonic scale… I have you to thank for opening my eyes - I hate to admit this but I have been playing for 20+ years on a very limited knowledge base, but things are looking up in my guitar world that I cherish so much!

I look back to my guitar lessons almost 50 years ago. Those teachers all just taught me songs. Then they would say that they can't really teach me any more because they had shown me all their material. They were afraid to teach the really important stuff thinking it would bore me and cause me to quit (ie. Theory, harmonized major scale, Nashville numbers). There are so many crappy guitar teachers. Some were terrific players, but not good communicators. Others were not even good players. I've learned so much more since the arrival of the internet, but it did help to not be a total beginner. I am able to recognize the gold nuggets of information amongst all of the BS. This video my friends is a gold mine. Thanks Rusty!

Hi Rusty, thank you. I am currently learning the notes and have made it to the 7th fret . I am not sure if I can retain all of that! I have been playing most of my life, mostly rhythm. Your instruction has helped me very much. I am going to guitar center to buy a looper,drum pedal and would like to know what you recommend. I am spending 2 to 3 hours a day practicing, trying to learn how to play lead and I’m tired of playing with backing tracks! Please let me know as soon as possible what you think would be a good pedal for me. Keep up the good work! Thanks again. I am approaching 63 years old and am not sure I can do this but I am going to give it my best effort! Rod Applegate

Sounds like you’re working on the right things Rod! I have the TC electronics Ditto 2x looper pedal and I love it! But there are different models and also boss make some great looper and drum pedals. I would search them out on KZbin. You will get a lot of information. Sounds like you’re having fun with that guitar man! I appreciate your comment. Talk to you soon.👍

Why can i play and predict songs without knowing what I play?? I envy you. You can put names on your notes... I can't. What's your trick? Whenever someone plays a bad note, I've got a headache and can't listen... Make a video about feeling music. Thanks

You can definitely have fun playing the guitar with out knowing what notes you’re playing the progress is slow. Many players just feel it, but they at least know the basic structure of the fretboard. Thanks. Have fun bro 😎 Catch you later 👍

Not trusting my ears - using tab too much. BTW how about lessons based on Midnight Blues (Snowy White), Blues Force (Larry Carlton/Fourplay) and Can't You See (MTB). Many thanks, Andy

What's the best way to use major and minor pentatonic what's the difference between them is it three frets they're the same pattern but three Frets different correct or not
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 10 ай бұрын
The simplest way is to use the minor pentatonic over minor chords, and the major pentatonic over major chords. But you can definitely mix the two together in more of a blues that contains seventh or ninth chords. And the positions are three frets apart yes. I have many videos on how to use the pentatonic scales along with many other teachers on KZbin. Happy jamming. Thanks David 👍

Wait wait wait 1:19 you can use major chord tones (triads) and use then with Minor pentatonic? It doesn’t have to be major pentatonic? I did not know this,,,,,😢
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 11 ай бұрын
You absolutely can! Blues players have been doing this for decades. Looking at major triads within the minor pentatonic scale is a great way to sound connected and bluesy at the same time. Thanks so much for checking out the video. Have a great Sunday.🙏

Make sure you are arching your fingers. Don’t lay your fingers in a flat position. Have your finger nails facing the fretboard not up (facing you). Thanks for watching! Happy Sunday 🙏
