Big seal CHOKED by Fan Belt

Fishing line and fishing nets are a regular sighting during seal patrol in Namibia when we look for entangled and distressed seals to be rescued. We have seen seals stuck in a toilet seat or wrapped in a full soccer net. Today's piece of ocean rubbish was a fan belt. The big seal bull somehow managed to entangle himself 3 times in this piece of rubber.
Namib_Naude and Antoine managed to cut him loose. Unfortunately, Naude Dreyer lost one of his Leatherman Tools in this process. It has served us extremely well and it will be missed, until we can replace it.
Walvis Bay and Namibia are still under lock down, but we are allowed to go to the beach to rescue animals. We have no other commitments because of the lock down, and we will continue to look after our seal colony, until we can find no more signs of animal cruelty. As long as there is pollution, OCN (Ocean Conservation Namibia) will have work to do. 🦭

Since I was 10 years old I heard and read about the danger of trash in the ocean for the marine wildlife. Now I am 40. Politicians and world rulers have done close-to-nothing during the last 30 years to stop humans from using nature and the oceans in particular as garbage bin. I don't want to imagine how much rubbish has summed up in the oceans since then. I also think that the number of marine animals dying because of the entanglements or of stomachs full of plastic pieces is endless as most of them are not found or seen by us. Makes me sick and sad.

Belts like that can be triple looped for easy storage and handling. The belts can almost do it themselves.

It was probably a big belt, more than two of the same type are used for large machinery. It was probably used and someone was dumb enough to throw it overboard. Otherwise, it could've fallen off by accident.

It could also have been put there on purpose... I have seen seals get onto fishing boats or get caught in nets when the net is hauled in. Could have been placed there by an irate fisherman..
