Severe sand storms in Namibia prevented the team from Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) from patrolling the beaches at Pelican Point for seal entanglement. Thursday evening, we got a little gap in the weather and Denzil, Naude and Antoine used the time to find this big male Cape Fur Seal adult. He had about 45 strands of fishing line wrapped around his neck and body.
Because of the heat, most of the seals were sitting close to the water and the activists had to approach the animal by car. Naude nearly missed him, but on his third attempt he managed to get him in the net. Together with Antoine, he dragged the seal back to the beach, and Denzil started with the cutting with our Leatherman Raptor Scissors. When the seal was released, he nearly bit Naude. Luckily we are always as cautious as possible and nobody got injured. We anticipate attached from the animal, they are under immense stress during the rescue. 🦭

Thank you very much! We have rescued 311 seals so far this year. Seals are very playful and curious by nature and play with everything they find in the water. Unfortunately, the world oceans are polluted beyond imagination and most of these 'toys' are marine debris that entangle them. Some scientists say that there is actually more plastic than fish in the oceans. Seals also get caught in fishing hooks or swim through discarded fishing gear without noticing them in time

The seal's size and strength seemed to make him a more difficult rescue than most of the ones I've seen on your videos. And when he got out of the net, that defensive gesture with his array of sharp teeth got my heart pumping. I subconsciously tried to jump back, but I'm sitting in a comfy chair. Must be quite an adrenaline rush for you guys, the actual rescuers. You take the risks. You save innocent lives. You are heroes.

@Alex Tit i'm a bit late to the party here, but i don't think they believe in the beliefs and rules laid out by the quran and islam in general. it's great that you have your own personal religious beliefs. but is it not better to let what i think the followers of islam might call "infidel's" to their own business in their own lands? i thought that the quran teaches those who follow it to be tolerant of non believers and be kind to them so you may make them believers of your faith at a later date? additionally this trash is left by people and not allah. we as humanity did this, i think that allah might not want his creatures to suffer and die because of the carelessness and disrespect of mankind. btw i am not a believer of any religion, just someone interested in history. and have done some light reading on islam and christianity because of it's impact on history. so i am far from an expert and could be wrong on some of this. just in general the most common reinforcing things mentioned about islam and even christianity has told me that one should be kind and respectfull in general, and to people who are acting for a common interest instead of a self interest are usually praised and aided whenever possible. something your kind of doing the opposite of.

Your videos should be shown in seaside communities all over the world. We need to educate fishing communities at the earliest possible time. Really any commercial and/or pleasure boat companies should have to sign an agreement NOT to pollute our oceans.
