Considering the consistent amount of confusion on the JP Poll, despite your best efforts to constantly clarify that it’s a power rating and not a ranking, why not change it to “Josh Pate Power Rate”? It’s catchy, clear, maybe people would think it should be “Power Rating” but they’d get over that soon enough. Whereas “JP Poll” is consistently misconstrued and it doesn’t look like that is changing anytime soon. Please consider.

I understand what the JP poll is trying to say, but I don't understand the point of it. I would be much more interested in your actual personal rankings of the teams. But the JP poll just uses Vegas power rankings, you slap your name on it, and then you defend yourself that these aren't really your rankings when people come after you. So what's the point of it? I could just check Vegas odds and lines if I wanted to know what they think.

In Bielemas defense, JP poll may be unfairly skewed towards SEC (as is Vegas). I mean look at the bowl spreads and outcomes of SEC vs Big Ten teams Ohio St. covered vs Tennessee USC covered vs A&M (won outright as underdog) Miz. covered vs Iowa (by half point) Michigan covered vs Bama (won outright as underdog) Illinois covered vs SC (won outright as underdog) Ohio st. covered vs Texas So, in 6 big ten vs SEC matchups, big ten covered 5 (3 underdog straight up wins) and the only one they didn’t cover was by half point.

I have no idea why Pate continues to use a betting site for points spreads and using point spreads for a poll, considering that point spreads ARE NOT predictive. They just aren't. They are for the sole purpose of attempting to get the money that is wagered to be equal on both sides. It is predictive of what gamblers believe. If gamblers change their minds, the spreads change. I think I'm shadow banned, so no one will see this anyway.

Its purpose is to determine who is favored over who on a neutral field. It does its job most of true time in that regard. If you think the model is terrible and biased, you must think Vegas lines are terrible and biased, so you should be all over the Vegas lines

I think the JP poll is fine for what it does. What I don’t think is that the JP poll is ranking anything people are interested in. The majority of polls are focused on either what team would win against other teams or what teams have accomplished more on the field. The JP poll rates… what Vegas would put out for people to lose money gambling against them? I don’t think that’s necessarily reflective of what people look for in a top 25. Particularly given the amount of people getting sick of seeing betting and gambling take over coverage of sports in general.

Point spreads are not predictive of anticipated results. They are a method of attempting to entice gamblers to bet equal amounts of money on each team. Using point spreads as a method of rating isn't good for anything for something that is decided by players and not gamblers.

I have watched your channel for years. I completely understand the purpose with your "poll", Neutral Field Favorability (NFF). However, just like with the service academies, it appears your model needs significant tweaking for undervaluing B1G mid-level teams. End of the season Michigan beats Illinois. Michigan lost because of an injured Jack Tuttle playing for the first time in over a year and a defense that blitzed too often. Two things that weren't happening when they beat Ohio State and Alabama. Illinois still deserved to win that game, but if both teams were fully healthy and my life depended on one team winning today, I'm taking Michigan.

Illinois won without there best player. Sc had there rb out with under 900 yards. Pretty even opt outs. A touch down that clearly was in and an onside kick Illinois shoulda recovered. It was a dominant show casing. Saying that the odds would still be 9.5 spread is saying that game was a one in a million which just isn’t the case

That's where the field comes into the equation. No way on Earth South Carolina should be ranked that much higher than Illinois by ANY metric. Absolutely no way.
