i love my '16 ST1, I got it in Race Red. Blue is my favorite but I've had so many blue cars i wanted to change it up. Both of yours look great! Ive got boosted/modified cars like a 91 miata and an 04 cavalier. The difference between them and my daily driven ST is my wife has to ride in it a lot, and i have to keep her happy lol. While she likes the speed, she's not a huge fan of the bouncy suspension and any drone on the highway. So I would have to say the 'single me' a few years ago would easily go for the stiffer, louder, more violent ride (big turbo), even as a daily. But my current choice due to keeping the wife happy, Id have to go with the stage3. Just not ready to drop a tune and FMIC that will void any warranties. So far its just an air filter, 50/50 bov, and im looking at a catback.

Focused Garage the last few weeks I’ve actually had a hard time deciding and I missed my window, Cjponyparts.com had a good sale on mbrp. I like the burbles of the Flowmaster but it’s tips look goofy, like gapped front teeth lol. Mbrp xp (3”) is the best choice to keep it subtle. I’m terrible at making decisions ☺️
@FocusedGarage6 жыл бұрын
+dham99 mbrp is gonna drone bad! I would suggest mountune, miltek or fswerks stealth. I have the cpe and you can adjust to get rid of the drone. I couldnt find the sweet spot yet but i have catless dp and a bigger turbo.
@dham996 жыл бұрын
really? from what Ive heard it seems to be the most subtle one that still has an aggressive sound under acceleration. A coworker has it and its pretty quiet at start up and idle. Tbo i dont mind drone, but the wife wouldnt care for it. Another option was the MRT axle back..has a nice sound and is under $400. but it really wont provide any additional performance since the stock piping and cat/resonator still exist.. for another $100 Id rather just get a full catback anyways

Be interesting getting a hybrid turbo against the big turbo. Pumaspeed with the x37 get over 320whp which is only 30 or so down from the big turbo. But you get less lag in between gears and i would imagine more torque lower down.

Awesome video! I have a very stupid question... besides comfortability/noise etc.. do you daily the big turbo? Is it ok to do? I am at about 60k miles.. I do not want to spend money on a ticking time bomb... I really would not have guessed that a bolt-on turbo upgrade would put the motor in danger. If professionally tuned, and you are pretty conservative, can you daily it without losing reliability? I just want to go faster.. it is fun, during the first 2 gears. So far what I have seen from other ST owners.. The most you can upgrade this car is--- FMIC BOV EXHAUST CAI AP SUSPENSION SHIFTER CHANGE FUEL TYPE BIG TURBO INTAKE MANIFOLD WHEEL/TIRE DIET RMM/TRANNY MOUNT .. couple smaller things. I love this car.. I love Ford in general. 3 Mustangs, 1 F-150, 1 ST. (Not all at once) And I am new to the tuner world.. I want to be different than my mustang buddies but it seems that there is nowhere near enough room to mod. Mustang Mods are endless, and you can smash GTR's, Vettes, Porsches, Vipers... with the right mods. Any motor work being done? Is it worth it? reliable? Thanks guys!

+Joshua Hollandsworth We have a video about what mods gives the most hp. You can find it in here kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIm0lJ-jfdOpg80. I do drive it daily. Currently have 50k miles on the stock engine and about 10-15k on the turbo set up. I cant comment on the reliability of the car because it has more than what its designed for as a reliable car. There are plenty of 400-450whp big turbo stock engine out there running. However there are plenty of blown engines with only tune. It is all up to the drivers and how they treat their cars. Thats why It is very hard to make a for sure statement about the reliability. It is a very fun car and a sleeper. I love driving it. I cant tell you not to mod the car but i cant promise you its going to be fine.
@topshelfjunkremoval89127 жыл бұрын
thanks for the honest answer! I can't decide. A friend of mine who owns an ST blew his engine too... Stratified tune. stock turbo. It scares me a little because I have zero idea what to do with a car like this.. without big turbo can you reach 300? thanks again man I love your car
@FocusedGarage7 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Hollandsworth you can reach that number with aux fuel and ethanol mix. Or you can get to 280-290 with e30 mix and custom tune. Aux fuel is around 1k+ so it is up to you if that 10+ worth that much.

+warren smith focus st unfortunately doesnt have real lsd. It controls it by using traction control and abs. Under regular driving and some spirited deiving works great. However, you cant replace the gain you would get from a real lsd with this electronic system. Occ will help eith carbon build up on the valves on the direct injection engine. So clean valves means using all the potential of the engine but again it wont help you put the power to the ground. Onder

Did you REALLY say you must upgrade your motor mounts for X amount of power? That is ludicrous, you update mounts because you are trying to launch the car aggressively on street tires which WILL wheel hop unless you learn what it takes for them not to hop. I had upgraded mounts on four out of the last six cars and will not do that again. I run slicks at the track and it won't wheel hop.

Also, Onder, Mike you guys went catless, I still have the stock DP and exhaust but I want the Stratified Stage 1 tune with loud crackles & pops. Have you guys heard if it damages the cat? Is it recommended on my setup? Onder I love your ST, it is brutal. But I have to go with Mike's car here. As a daily, I'd need something quieter lol. Hey there, I love the noise from my axle back. Its quiet when I want, and loud at WOT. No droning at all unless I'm doing over 80MPH. In regards to the crackles, Stratified says that over time if you have a cat that their tune with the pops can degrade the cat. It probably would take a long time, but I still probably wouldn't take that chance. For a good audio clip of my exhaust, check out the last few minutes of our latest video where we compare my car to a stock FoST. It gives you a great idea of the noise. -Mike

If that pans out, I will go full bolt on with Stratified Pops and Crackles. But I will keep the stock exhaust as this is my only car. So I’ve been thinking for the past few month on tuning my 2017 St, I currently have a mrbp exhaust, boomba bov and green filter, my question is who do you guys recommend as a safe and knowledgeable tuner for these cars? I have heard good things about Randy at Mountune, as well as Alex at stratified, but my main concern is reliability. I also plan to add a depo catted dp, depo intercooler and im guessing colder spark plugs right? (Stock turbo)
@FocusedGarage6 жыл бұрын
I would suggest Adam from Tune+. He tuned my big turbo focus st and my stock one as well. He doesnt have ots tunes. They are all custom and you can get life time tune. Everytime you change your setup, you can get a new revision. Intercooler and colder plugs are only things you need. Dp wont add much power. It would be just for the sound.
@K24FB66 жыл бұрын
Focused Garage I appreciate the fast reply, I just emailed him, yeah as for the dp that pretty much what I want, just to make the car louder, so would you say I should be fine with tuning my ST? Im not looking to make crazy numbers just something a little more fun but reliable.

@@FocusedGarage that's a very obtuse thought, stock turbo or upgraded, their are tons of other bolt on mods that are all going to make a difference in response time, torque, top end speed and handling. if you want to be a close minded parking lot tuner i guess stick with your exposed FMIC and your tuners, but i know i want my car to put down the power i work for, and handle like a go cart.

+radioflyer20081 Focus st stage 3 considered: intercooler + down pipe + filter. Intake and cat back exhaust dont add any more power. Stage 3 label is coming from cobb. I use the term full bolt on instead of stage. Also stage3 car had the intercooler filter amd downpipe with axle back. Onder

The placement of your front tags really restricts a lot of air... and the 2nd guy has all stock motor mounts? He must not race much because these cars don't hook up and wheel hop like mad in 1st and 2nd gear with stock mounts...a pass side and a RMM will knock almost 1/2 a second off your 1/4 mile times when used with an FSWerks traction bar...those are the first things you should do to this car, but instead you guys throw exhaust on it that gives no extra power and makes you sound like kids with all the pops and crackles...

A lot of folks keep commenting to "buy an RS" with the money instead of upgrading or mods. I can buy a brand new ST for under $20,000 a new RS is $40,000. There is not $20,000 worth of fun in the RS over the ST. Besides I'd rather have a fun ST with $20,000 to play with, if the choice was mine. I don't know how others justify their purchases, but it doesn't make dollars and sense to me.
@FocusedGarage6 жыл бұрын
+MyKZbinChannel I always laugh at the "why didn't you buy an RS" comments. People just like to troll on the internet and think the RS is the be all end all car when it's truly not. It's a great car don't get me wrong but the ST is also a great car in it's own right, especially after on certain modifications.

I guess you need to shop around. A quick search on Autotrader just turned up a brand new ST at Pittsville Ford in Pittsville, MD for $20,061. There were a few brand new ST's on that particular site when I posted the above comment, for $19,500. I could easily find several to prove my honesty, but I don't have the time to waste on someone who could do the search themselves, instead of making a foolish comment.

In regards to what? It has been proven time and time again that a cold air intake, cat back exhaust, and charge pipes do nothing on a stock turbo car. All you need is a downpipe, intercooler, and air filter.

Brent Evans I always thought stage 3 cars had bigger turbo and fuel system. Basic bolt on is basically stage 1 maybe 2
@warrensmith7927 жыл бұрын
Focused Garage every car enthusiast has a different set of "stages" for their favorite car. I'm sorry to say every factory turbo car is different. My srt benefits greatly from cai and a tb exhaust. A bfmic on a stock srt actually causes hotter air temps and zero gains compared to oem. Every car is different. If you want to learn the "stages" of mods for a specific car in order to build it to that stage using your own choice of manufacturers; you can just look it up. I'm pretty sure Mountune is an aftermarket support that works with closely with Ford. I know for my car, Stg 3 neons have an upgraded ecu, mopar bov plate, bigger injectors and tuning toys like a wotbox or something (along with usual breathing app ai, exhaust etc.)
@FocusedGarage7 жыл бұрын
+warren smith stages for the focus was set by cobb. I dont like using stage word because it means different stuff for different cars. I like to use full bolt on or even all the parts you need to make the most power. With the focus st intake and exhaust doesnt add power. Down pipe adds little power but not much to notice. In reallity, all you need is a cobb tuner or sct and a bigger intercooler to make about 290whp and 390wtrq on the stock turbo. If you are trying to make power with the focus st, list should be tuner+intercooler then bigger turbo (with intake and exhaust) then aux fuel (since no upgrade available for the high pressure fuel pump) around 400whp to 450whp you would wanna upgrade internals and a stroker kit to make it 2.3lt then about 770whp sleeved block. Stock trans all the way and stock half shafts. So far thats the record. Onder

Stage 3 for this car is a joke.
@danielbargas33776 жыл бұрын
Focused Garage I would consider stage 1 turbo supporting mods, intake, intercooler, exhaust, tune, stage 2 would add a bigger turbo and a uprated clutch, stage 3 is forged internals, aftermarket custom fabbed turbo setup, head stud kit, even stronger clutch and stand alone
@FocusedGarage6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Cobb created the stages for the focus and made it up. I would say only intercooler and tune are needed to support the turbo on this car. Intake and exhaust don't add any significant power. However most people don't know this. It's so much easier to say stage 3 than explain it.

Stage 3 ST yet there’s no motor mods? Lol... and a big turbo on the ST only makes 330-350 Wheel? I made 330whp on the STOCK turbo in my MK7 GTI. Now I’m IS38 and making close to 400whp. Glad I went with the GTI over the ST.

+Kasey Guerra focus st stages are different than other cars. That number was before fuel upgrade car is making 400whp with stock internals. And turbo is cabable of making 550whp. Also still stock clutch ;)

Not great. I did a 13' ST from 13-15' and it took lots more mods and a big turbo to match the power of my stock turbo mild bolt on 2010 Cobalt SS. It's to bad Zford didn't put a bigger k04 turbo on it. My SS with just a E55 tune and DP made 325 hp/360 tq at the wheels, whereas my 14' ST required full bolt ons, big turbo and 24 psi on 93 fuel, to hit 330 hp at the wheels and 365 tq. Plus the SS was a sedan and only 3000 lbs vs a base ST at 3220 lbs.
@FocusedGarage6 жыл бұрын
+MH motorVlogs small turbo with limited fuel system equals to small gains. But once you put a bigger turbo and aux fuel system, sky is the limit. Most run their cars around 450whp with no problem. And block is good for 750whp. Car is heavy because of all the safety regulations. Thicker beams and more air bags add weight to it.
