As a former EA employee, me and everyone I ever saw or talked to was let go Christmas of 2008 in the depths of the financial crisis while they paid all their execs 7 figures, then closed every office and let go of virtually every single employee including pandemic and the LA office. Us EALA people still talk and moved on but I’ll never forget that they paid the execs millions of dollars while laying off on every employee in LA.

The execs make the machine work, you are just a cog, remember that. What a cog knows? How to spin on it's own axis, it takes many cogs to represent something of value. "Hur dur but if not for me there would be no game hur dur", cool, but a cog can be easily replaced, you as a low-level developer has no value in the grand scheme of things. An exec knows how the machine work, knows how to build it, fix it and improve on it, that's why execs are more expandable than cogs. If you have to cut something, you start at the base, not at the top. In every big company, you, developer/designer/low-level-contributor, are a cog that work solely to make the investors richer, nothing else. The game being good, bad or half-assed is just a byproduct of the primary objective: make the investors richer. And I don't mean to embed a sense of moral in this, that's just how the world works. Things fall down, water is wet and big companies primary concern is making it's investors richer. That's the beauty of things, you know what they are, and you know exactly what to expect from them. If you work at a big company and expect "mom's treatment" you have a problem with your perception of reality, it's like believing the moon is made of cheese, and by chewing on it's soil get mad because it tastes like gunpowder.

Honestly, that's the best course of action, and I'll explain why. Indie games are, well, independent, and aren't backed by billion dollar corporations. They realize that if they fuck up a game, then they're done and can't keep developing games and paying people. So they HAVE to do it right and make a solid game. So they do. The thing is, you might forgot to include pets in the first release, that's ok. You might forgot firefighter jobs, that's minor. There is no rolling spiral space-saving staircase? What now? No jeans for the Sims, no cars (despite being included in default Sims 3), no basement, etc. So, in every new base Sims game, they are skimping more and more contents. A colleague bought Star Wars Battlefront 2 recently. We got to talking and I mentioned the pay to win, 80 hour grind and other questionable things that caused such a big controversy on release that they had to patch these things. Here's the thing though... He just kept repeating that I'm wrong as he's playing the game and doesn't experience the issues "I'm clearly making up" Like... yeah, dude. You're not gonna experience issues years after they've been patched out. That's the point I'm talking about! That they got so much backlash that they were forced to turn it into what you play today! How is it not possible to understand "it was like *this* years ago and is like *that* now"?
