Courtney, Riley. Old sail boat builders trick. Seal the backside of the counters with 25% thinned epoxy and then full strength coats. Not even salt air at sea will penetrate it. Might do the sides too.

Hello from the Netherlands . i liked the reaction at 8:44 on the firewood "fire" haha . I also know a very good musical "fire" for you that is definitely worth listening to : the Dutch Floor Jansen with her single "Fire". and cutting something off at 63 if you need 61.3/4 is not a bad thing. but sawing something off at 61.3/4 when you need 63 is crazier haha. thanks for the video AS. For the cutting board, use a butcher block oil, not a normal wood finish (not poly). You don't want to get almost any other finish in your food, and the butcher block oil you can keep reapplying as needed and sand the block when it gets worn looking easily before reapplying the oil.

After banging my hip on the sharp corner of the kitchen island a couple of times over a period of a few years by not paying close enough attention, I finally cut a pool noodle a built cushions that work, but now the island has lime green foam corners with blue painters tape. Ugly, but it’s already saved my hip a sore spot over the last year. Your beautiful new counters look great but that corner at the end of the counter might be a spot to watch out for, or just round it off a bit now that the staining is being done. Congrats on getting so much done in your kitchen. It looks great and I bet it’s a joy having a working kitchen. After working for 37 yrs at the same place, my retirement dream was to travel the country in a motorhome. Bought a big diesel pusher and did just that. Problem was, every RV park at the same tiny little spots with barely enough room to walk around that big 39 footer with four slides. And most weekend mornings started early with kids yelling and screaming. Ahhh yes. The retirees dream come true. NOT.!. Sold the motorhome and bought a place at the coast. Property taxes aren’t any where near what my diesel bills were. I sure understand how nice it is to settle down again. Even if I did lose my shirt on the coach lol.

Looking good folks. Please oil the underside of the worktops to stabilise the surface and keep it in balance with the top, or it is very likely to warp. Also you should join the right angle sections together with worktop bolts or they will develop gaps as the boards expand and contract with changes in humidity and temperature. Been fitting kitchens for over 20 years.

You kids have the wood gods on your side! When drilling or cutting any board that will be seen, use tape over the area to be cut and that prevents the wood from splintering and tearing a piece out making it very hard to repair. Also when sanding those areas that the two pieces join, use elmers glue mixed heavy with the sawdust from the same wood to force into the cracks/small gaps and let it dry in there so that when sanding, the "line" disappears to never be seen again.... that is if you seal the top. Elmers is water soluble and will wash away if not sealed. I find the money for stuff we love to have has not caught up to a average working mans wage. I have had both... a ton of money and all the very finest materials... I feel more comfortable in a home a average man can afford... I hope it makes sense to you. If you had went dark on those tops I do think you may regret it so take a small piece with the dark stain and put it through hot pan scenarios or hot water, a scratchy bottom pan or kids playing just where they shouldn't of .. with me raising nine kids at the time, we ran a halfway house, it showed the evidence of abuse quickly. A few years and things become memories.... no matter how damn hard it gets or what breaks, hang on to each other. Its the only valuable thing you will ever have.

Peanut butter and Nutella on white bread is a serious calory bomb! I am sure it tastes great, but I have to eat more sensible and go for a leaner cuisine, or I would get super heavy and need help with everything. I am no longer as active as I was when I was Riley's age, and it seems I can gain weight by walking past the refrigerator! Lol. Great kitchen you are making.
