i am autistic w/ adhd, so i struggle *alot* with social norms and shit. i have never understood birthdays. i enjoyed my own, because im a middle child and any attention was very much appreciated. like tucker said, how is it your accomplishment? i also do not understand people who think money is an impersonal gift. i think its kinder then having to watch your friend pretend to enjoy your random ass gift. i have so much anxiety when it comes to forgetting someones birthday. i, deep down, do not really care however it has been drilled into me that it is something a friend does. at this point, in relationships, i dont rely on feelings, i rely on a checklist of things that are a social norm.

I personally think birthdays are fine (I’m under 21 and not the target audience but still) but I do agree that some people make it a bigger deal than it needs to be, but really all I want as a present is my friends company, I don’t want presents and I won’t expect them to pay for any events I just want to have a good time with them (also I am 100% in support of still having things like piñatas lol)

A lot of people care about their birthday because it’s the only day of the year were people feel obligated to pay attention to them. I had this one really socially star friend who always would make a big thing out of their birthday and have a bunch of people over just because they never got the hang out with anybody any other time

I don't mind birthdays. What weirds me out is when grown ass adults obsess over their birthday like children and make the day all about themselves. That's the real issue. If you're a grown ass adult, a small kickback with some friends or even just family should be more than enough. And the only birthdays that you should go a little extra on are "milestone" birthdays like 16, 21, and then maybe 30, 40... Etc..

You're so wise. So cynical. Seeing you process your complicated emotions openly and honestly on this platform, instead of seeing a therapist as you absolutely should, is sort of a therapy for me. So now I don't need therapy! Look at all this money we're saving!!
@MenofMañana
@MenofMañana Ай бұрын
Therapy may be the most overrated, if not toxic, thing in this reality. The idea of exchanging money for someone’s attention is sad as fuck, yet people push it and praise it like it’s the second renaissance. The truth is, that person wouldn’t give a shit to help you if you didn’t have that cash money. Simple.
@jerpmerp6157
@jerpmerp6157 Ай бұрын
@leopetaccia1012 its about having an unbiased person to talk to. They aren't invested in your life, and with that they can give advice and help from an outside point of view. The people in your life may very well be why you need to seek therapy. Also many people simply dont have anyone to talk to, for various reasons.
@MenofMañana
@MenofMañana Ай бұрын
@@jerpmerp6157 I agree. It’s the part where one has to exchange money for this unbiased attention. It’s another example of how fake this reality is, and it gives itself away through these types of exchanges. Ultimately, the patient needs to not only feel like they’re being listened to-they need to feel like the other person cares. And that person can never truly care if they never invest in the patient emotionally without the stipend that comes with it. Money. Money is the killer of authenticity. In a reality where justice actually exists, those who suffer would never have to exchange a resource for genuine care. Genuine care ought to be either free or provided by our government. But then, governments don’t give a shit about the individual’s wellbeing, only that said individual stays in line and pays taxes. I don’t doubt there are a minority of therapists who are good people in their hearts and hate that they have to charge their patients. But the majority don’t question the nature of our very reality, so they’ll take the money and feel nothing over it. I’m not saying their time ought to be free, but the patient shouldn’t have to fork over the cash. The government should, and if said government actually cared for the mental health of its citizens such that they can produce and preserve prosperity, then they’d happily pay for therapy. But they don’t, which further proves much of this is fake.

In college we did a sort of terror chant instead of singing. Everyone stands in a circle around the birthday person and says "happy birthday" in a monotone and claps in unison. We would gradually speed up, get louder, and close in on the target, and once they were sufficiently uncomfortable, everyone would cheer. Loads more fun than singing a song.

My aunt, who grew up in the 50s-60s and was the oldest of 7 siblings in a poor family didn’t really get to have big birthday parties, plus she spent most of her young-adult years raising her kids, her many nephews/nieces and then her grandkids/great -nieces/nephews. But now in her 60s she does the ‘birthday week’ where she and her best friend go over to America to celebrate at a casino and spend time together away from their grandkids and husbands. She is the only exception to the weird birthday-week-girl cause she deserves it!!

Fair enough. But then why need an "excuse" to show appreciation? If you appreciate someone, tell them! If you want to give someone a gift, do it! IF you are and adult you should be able to. So, my birthday is in 1 week and I'm spending it on my own in a pool in my hotel in a foreign country - and also probably buying a cake for myself. Perfect birthday, I'd say.

I feel like birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions should be celebrated with those whom you love and care for the most. Best friend, significant other, yourself and a nice day out on your birthday, yes! Taking 20+ women from your office to go down to vegas for a week long "bachelorette funday vacay!" No. Stop. Too much.

birthdays, and by extension birthday parties, are a celebration of the individual. every person deserves to be celebrated and given a special day where their loved ones can make them feel extra special/appreciated. i *love* getting to have a day where i can just celebrate my loved ones for a whole day! that's not to say i don't also celebrate them for the rest of the year, but it's nice to have a day to just feel special!

My birthday is typically on or near Thanksgiving in the us. I was constantly overshadowed by a holiday as a child, and people wonder why i dont think its a big deal. That and i share a birthday with my quadruplet cousins. All i want for my brithday is to make spaghetti and cookies and not to them share with anyone.

I basically just use my birthdays as an excuse to hang out with my friends that I don't get to see in person very often anymore, we just play games and yell at each other like a normal hangout except there's a garuntee that there will be cake or cupcakes for us all to enjoy, honestly wouldn't have it any other way, it's simple and fun

Yeah, birthdays are kind of a weird thing, but like, Idunno, you said it yourself dude, we're constantly getting closer to not being in this world anymore, let people enjoy things. I personally don't like big gatherings, but being able to do something special with my partner, my mom and maybe a friend or two to celebrate my or one of their birthdays, to spend a day feeling loved and appreciated and wanted, to feel like there are a few people that are happy I'm around or an opportunity to let them know I'm glad they're around... it's nice. There's something warm and pleasant about that.

Bro I love celebrating my birthday because I never do anything for myself most of the year, but that day feels like the one day it's okay for me to do something nice for myself. Whatever that may be. Even if it's just going for a walk in the park and buying myself something I usually wouldn't let myself have.

I'm 58. I haven't cared about birthdays for myself in years. I did celebrate 55 just because. I will say, old people get to celebrate as well. We had a party for my mom this year. She's a great grandmother (in every sense). Old people deserve to celebrate.

I'm glad it's not just me. I turned 18 during the height of covid and haven’t really cared since. Last year one of my coworkers got offended when I mentioned my birthday was the week before like that's something that massive. The purpose of our friendship is gossip, Janelle, not actual personal things. I don't give a shit about your son graduating high school, just tell about your ex husband's restraining order so we can talk shit about him

In my opinion it's not bad to celebrate birthdays even as an old person. There is nothing wrong with calling your friends over for a little get together at home for example. You buy some drinks, get a small cake, and you just chill out. It's basically the same as hanging out with the boys, but now it's a bit better cus you have cake too. Xd
