In Thailand, “nam dtan,” literally means the water of the palmyra palm, but today that word is used for normal sugar. That’s because traditionally this was the main source of sugar in Thailand - and it still is common - but white table sugar has taken over for convenience and cheap price. But palmyra palm sugar is the real deal, fragrant, mildly sweet, and much less processed and healthy.
Before visiting this palmyra palm tree fruit plantation, I didn’t know all the different uses of this amazing fruit and tree.

I am from Telangana (India) , in our childhood to get the sprout inside the shell , it would take 10 to 15 minutes for each, toddy palm is a magical tree , we drink its sap , wine , and we eat its seeds , fruits, sprout, stem and even fungus growing inside it (we call it thati buzu) , we use its leaves to make ropes , glases for drinking water and as roof of houses and its stem is used to build houses and as firewood

Me too.. i was so excited when i was watching him devour the Jellies. Back in India, we grew up enjoying those for every summer. And the fruit, awww.. it has a nutty taste to it. And we used to get the roots (like potato) and steam/roast and eat them too... I guess, the roots bear them for a season, but the tree will continue to live. Ahh! This video brought back some treaty nostalgic feelings... And this guy's reactions are so realistic and so Joyful... simple in words and very expressive in giggles and emotions..

Brought back fond memories of growing up in Mumbai. We used get the jelly like fruit which used to be our after school snack. Locally it is called Taad Gole, taad= palm and gole=ball. In South India they would sell it whole with the husk and all and I think they called it nongu. Nongu sherbat is an amazing refreshing drink made from it.

Thank you for the cool video! The seed jelly socket of the fruit is common delicacy here in the northern shore of Java in Indonesia. People usually made beverages with the slices of the jelly combined with palm sugar and coconut cream. But I never know that the husk could be consumed immediately like that. It is kind of unusual here. Really amazing discovery there!

The palm fruit is called " Luk Tarn ", it is tasty but not recommended for a one biter. Because, it is very slippery and you can easily get choked eating it that way. The best way to eat it is to slice the Luk Tarn into thin and small bite size. Love the VDO and please keep it coming Mark.

The white part (seed) is called SIWALAN in Central Java, Indonesia. It's common to found it in dry season 😊 I really like Siwalan when it fresh 😊🥰

in Indonesia, we call the fruit Lontar Fruit. we use the sap to make aren (palm) sugar, and traditionally some tribes ferment the sap to make tuak (alcohol drink). we also drink the sap (sugar juice?) and some also call it nira water. when in season, street vendor sells the fruit in Jakarta.

Hi Mark. Love the video, reminds me of how much i love my country. Here in the Seychelles we have one of our palm trees that has similar texture to this one but way more beautiful as it inspires a womans beauty. The local name is 'Coco de Mer' and scientificaly called Lodoicea. Unfortunately it is so protected that u may be imprisoned if caught with one without permit. As I'm from Batticaloa, eastern part of Srilanka, we had this palm tree tons of them in our backyard. Normally the whole palm fruit you put it in a open fire and roasted for at least 30 minutes. It's become more sweeter. The seed you can put it back in the land and make more trees. But if you leave it for a month in the land and take it, you can boil it and eat with coconut chunks. You can even sun dried the roots too, to eat in the future. This trees have use of every parts. Top to bottom. PS: You can make toddy too 😉
