An explanation for why Bigscreen Beyond went with a custom interface

I have a couple revisions to mention. I was told that in most cases the BSB interface will be adjusted to center your eyes on the lenses using the interface. I was also told that they have taken a number of headsets with multiple IPD settings and a variety of interfaces to try to fit many people's faces for demo purposes, but these are not ideal like a custom interface is.

100% agree with all the reasons you gave for buying the bigscreen. They are the same reason why I will be getting one too. (At some point). It won't be my first headset but I will just keep my old CV1 for anyone who wants a go, the bigscreen is just for me.

In the future, all VR headsets will be custom made to the user's face and eyes like this. Expecting to be able to share your personal VR gear with other people will be considered just as absurd as expecting to do so with your prescription eye glasses. And for the very same reasons. Of course they're not going to fit or work properly for someone else! Ordering VR headsets may become something you do at an optometrist, just like ordering eye glasses. And they'll have the gear to scan your face and measure your eyes accurately for the purpose.

The modular design is interesting. It would have the highest FOV of any modern headset. Time will tell on execution etc.. but we haven't seen one in the wild yet and if a product is going to be delivered in 4th quarter I would have expected some beta units to be out there by now. Maybe they will surprise me. On the plus side, I own a Prusa Printer also from Prague, which is also an open source product. I also have a Jeti DS-16 from Prague and it's a well engineered transmitter. Not sure if we can infer anything from association, but I've been very happy with both of those products. I hope they bring something new and cool to the VR space.

Great video, thanks! I didn't thought about IPD asymetry before, you gave me the wish to buy one Beyond also ^^ (I already have an Arrow as you). (Wooops the headset that falls off at around 7min :s )

The beyond is a big step in the right direction for enthusiast tier consumer. If we can get better controllers and no base stations it would be an absolute unbeatable VR interface
@markkovalcson72439 ай бұрын
I can't imagine them changing either of those things and frankly I would MUCH rather that they be working on a Bigscreen Beyond 2 than reinventing the wheel. With regard to the tracking, the BSB has a huge interest from the VRChat community that have full body tracking devices, so they will need lighthouses. It's also likely much lighter not to have the inside/out processing and cameras on the headset. With regard to the controllers, the only other company beside Valve with nice hand controllers is Meta. Most of the rest are pretty poor. It takes a huge effort to design something like a good hand controller and Bigscreen is a pretty small company. So I'm just happy that they managed to make this headset and I'm getting very excited to get mine in the next 2-3 weeks now.

Great video, thank you. I have the varjo aero and love it, but I’m considering the BSB due to light weight and custom face interface as I find in my motion rig that the movement of the rig in sim racing causes the heavier aero to bounce around a bit and it’s a big problem. I have turned down the motion platform to compensate and even thought about ditching VR and going to triple monitors for even better visuals and no problems of the Vr headset moving on my face. I’ll wait for the reviews of the BSB visuals as compared to the aero (I know the aero will be sharper than the BSB but the light weight and custom fit if the bsb might be a good option before I make the investment to go to triple monitors and lose the depth perception and immersion of Vr)

The Bigscreen also has about 15-20 degrees better stereo overlap compared to the Aero and much better blacks and zero issues with moire and CA. It looks like I won't be seeing mine until the middle to end of November now. So I can't directly compare them yet.

The Beyond reminds me of the Mavic pro drone. Sorry to come with this but in the drone industry, a foldable and tiny drone made the whole industry change their vision. We used to fly heavy drones with big cameras.. now with the Mavic Pro we could do the same with a little foldable thing. This headset will change the whole VR industry.

Very cool. I was heavily into the line of sight RC Helicopters. Granted they were acrobatic with Swash plates etc rather than drones, but I've got some that are pretty large 700 - 800mm blade size.

I hope to see mine in the next couple weeks, so I can't tell you yet. I also do sim and shooter games. Lately Vertigo 2 and I keep going back to In Death. Will likely start HLA over in the Bigscreen just because of the BLACK blacks.

@@markkovalcson7243 i did try Pimax Crystal and black level is amazing too. Its heavy but clearity and edge to edge sweet spot and big fov makes it up. I really want the Beyond as movie theater screen but i heard glare is less but very define and strong compare to Index glare so that scares me.
@markkovalcson72439 ай бұрын
@@ji3200 It's great there are many headsets to pick from. The Aero is very comfortable out of the box, but even at it's weight, there are issues because the headset carries so much momentum when moving my head quickly. I will never buy a headset that heavy or heavier again. Ideally I think I would like the weight of a Rift CV1 or lighter from this point forward. I also think given the Bigscreen is a disruptive headset that is very different from anything else out there that people will take time to understand how important the size and weight are to the whole VR experience.

Well looking at the website and their teardown video i think as far as IPD its not mm precise its either 66 or 67 there is no lets say 66.4 i think face gasket conforming to face is probably what helps most as for example lets say you have 66 it would still look fine for most people in like 65-67 range.
@markkovalcson724311 ай бұрын
There is some wiggle room to be sure. If you have an IPD or 66.5 they could set it to either 66 or 67 and then center your face on that so that your eyes are only off by only 0.25mm each. Technically if you are within the range they support 55-72mm they should be able to get your eyes centered within a 0.25 mm. However they do mention that if you have a 53mm IPD that 55 should be acceptable and 74 for 72 since each eye if perfectly centered would only be off by 1mm.

The only thing I worry about with the bigscreen is the glare
@markkovalcson724311 ай бұрын
As a Valve Index user for 3.5 years, I never noticed glare in game, but only for one title screen. So I'm not expecting to notice it much. I understand it's much less in the BSB than the Index. OTOH I've had an Aero with no glare since February, so it might have changed my reference point. I'll find out for myself when it gets here.

@markkovalcson7243 I notice some glare in my quest 2 and wouldn't want it to be any worse then that
@wraithstrikevids11 ай бұрын
@@goofycart Index glare isn't that bad, as the owner of both I barely use my quest 2, it has way worse flaws overall
@SargonDragonАй бұрын
The glare is pretty similar to the god rays on the Index in terms of how present it is. It's basically god rays in a different form. I find that when I'm evaluating it, I really notice the glare a lot. But when I'm actually playing a game, I don't. Just like it was with the Index. Note that the amount of glare a user will experience is affected by fitment. You'll see reports from people who tried the Beyond and immediately gave up. And this will commonly be because fitment wasn't correct. Bigscreen will work with you to get the fitment right, even if they have to swap out the headset or remake your pad. They're pretty big on customer support. Once you've got the right fitment, this headset shines. But if it's even a little wrong, it can cause problems.

I’m hearing a lot of comments that the screen it’s not bright ? For an oled that’s surprising. Can you confirm that this is a con?
@markkovalcson72439 ай бұрын
The reason you are hearing about brightness has to do with the light loss in pancake lenses. Pancake lenses are very small and light compared to aspheric, but there is more light loss. So you are correct that the microOLED panels do put out a lot of light. It's just that a large percentage of that light is lost before you see it. That said, most people find that it is bright enough and are happy with it.
@SargonDragonАй бұрын
Pancake lenses only pass through about 15% of the light. So the Beyond's panels themselves are actually _very_ bright, but what the user sees is a little dim compared to other VR headsets. That's not what you experience though. The custom fitted pad blocks out external light completely. The irises in your eyes will adjust to the light level of the headset. And so you perceive it as being similarly bright to other headsets. It's kind of like when you come inside to a well lit room from outdoors. Your eyes adjust. The amount of light inside is actually _MUCH_ lower than outside even though it feels similar.
@Leynad77811 ай бұрын
That's misinformation. To Quote their website: "Beyond comes in 18 sizes, from IPD 55mm-72mm". There is no asymetrical IPD adjustment and they only do these 18 models with 1 mm increments between them.
@markkovalcson724311 ай бұрын
I tried to clear that up in the first pinned comment. They use the custom interface to center your eyes. So in my case, I have exactly a 62mm IPD between my eyes, and the interface will be adjusted to center the displays on my eyes even though my eyes are not centered on my face. So they do handle asymmetrical IPD but use the custom interface to do it. However I was told that they could make asymmetrical IPD adjustments if it was necessary.
@Leynad77811 ай бұрын
@@markkovalcson7243 Sure about that? With the lenses today 1 mm IPD-difference shouldn't be a problem and the Quest 2 only provides 3 different IPD-settings. What's more important is the right display-alignment and Pimax is offering the IPD-offset option. Even a 10th of a millimetre can make a difference because of the stereo-overlap and that's what's missing in SteamVR with other headsets. Not just the position of the eyes might be not symetrical, but also the angle differs, so a one size fits all approach can't work for all.
@markkovalcson724311 ай бұрын
@@Leynad778 I got this straight from BSB. When they scan your face, they take an IPD measurement and get the contours of your face. Then they take he closest matching IPD inserts to install in the headset and they shift custom interface contours to center the displays on your eyes. So for my 31.5, 30.5 = 62mm IPD, they would use a 62 IPD insert and shift my facial contours over 0.5mm to center the displays on my face. Keep in mind that because the displays are smaller, they require better alignment. This is on reason generic interfaces wouldn't work on the BSB.

My only reason to making this video is because of the confusion I've seen around this. Especially the comment that they should "just" put a generic interface on this headset. My hope is that understanding why it's design requires this level of custom interface and the reasons they did this would eliminate this confusion.
