Our First Time Watching: The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 3 *Lon Long Time*! Traveling to Lincoln, Massachusetts, Joel and Ellie encounter a mass grave along a road. Joel explains the military culled some survivors of smaller towns while they were being evacuated to conserve food and living space for those deemed healthy enough to work in the quarantine zones.
Twenty years earlier, in Lincoln, Bill monitors the evacuation from an underground bunker beneath his house, then ransacks abandoned businesses for supplies and materials to build a generator, electric fence, and traps. Four years later, while checking one of his traps, Bill finds a man named Frank , who bargains for a hot meal, a shower, and fresh clothes. Before he leaves for Boston, he talks Bill into playing the piano. Frank deduces from Bill's passionate singing that he has never had anyone in his life and kisses him, and the two men have sex. Three years later, Frank convinces Bill to help him clean up the neighborhood so they can start making friends. The misanthropic Bill is skeptical, especially when Frank invites Tess (Anna Torv) and Joel to visit for lunch to discuss establishing a smuggling operation. Joel speaks with Bill and convinces him to accept Frank's plan by pointing out deficiencies in the town's defenses that he and Tess can help fix. Later, raiders attempt to infiltrate the town, severely injuring Bill before being repelled by his defenses.
Ten years later, both Bill and Frank are elderly, with a degenerative disease leaving Frank wheelchair-bound; he asks Bill to help him die. On his final day, Bill takes Frank to dress in new suits and the two quietly marry in their living room. After dinner, Bill places a lethal dose of sleeping tablets in both of their drinks, admitting he has no desire to live without Frank in his life. They retire to their room.
Several weeks later, Joel reaches Lincoln with Ellie. Ellie finds a letter from Bill addressed to Joel, allowing Joel to take his truck, weapons, and supplies. Bill describes how caring for and protecting Frank gave him a purpose, and states both he and Joel have a mission to save a life no matter the cost. When Joel discovers Bill was referring to Tess, he becomes emotional. He and Ellie agree to take Bill's truck and travel to Wyoming to find Tommy, who may be able to help transport Ellie to the Fireflies. Joel sets new rules for Ellie: neither of them is to address Tess or their histories; Ellie is to keep her condition a secret; and Ellie has to follow Joel's orders completely. After stockpiling from Bill's stash, Joel and Ellie drive away from Lincoln.

Bill in the game shows what Joel could become if he isolates himself from the world and how that could affect him mentally. He would be become a shitty person and be completely alone and be in a life full of hate towards everything and everyone. Therefore Joel chooses to start caring about Ellie and starts to protect her so that he doesn't end up like Bill, there's a lesson to be learned there. Bill in the TV show shows what Joel could become if he takes care of the people that are worth taking care of, like Tess and later on Ellie. He'd be happy and feel love once again, so Joel chooses to start taking care of Ellie more now so that he can end up like Bill, there's that same lesson to be learned here. Ultimately both stories lead the protagonist to the same choice and path and serve the same purpose, but in the same way that you need gameplay to experience how Joel would become more of a hateful man in the game, you need a love story to show the audience how Joel would become more of a loving man in the TV show.

My favorite part about the difference in this episode is that it still got across the message that Joel needed but also gave us a fleshed out backstory. It had me weeping multiple times; even after watching it twice, listening to the podcast, and multiple reacts over the last day, it still hits. It is bonkers to me that this is still so early in the story. I have so much to look forward to. My 76 year old mother who has no context for these kind of movies, let alone understands every beat of this show.

Adaptations are marvelous in that they allow you to explore nooks and crannies left by the original. And just for that, they deserve to exist, beyond the criticisms of the fundamentalists of the original. I liked this episode. Touching, sad and ultimately hopeful. Bill's letter reminds me of Sam's words in LotR "There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for.". In an apocalypse, hope is an inescapable weapon.

The infected man Ellie killed was a stalker. Stage 1: Runner Stage 2: Stalker Stage 3: Clicker Stage 4: Bloater A stalker also "kissed" Tess. The fungus is already broken through the skullcap, but they can still see. Stalkers usually hide in the dark and lie in wait for their victims. Often come in groups. Frank had all the signs of multiple sclerosis. I assume you know what that means. Through this episode we also know that Joel knew Tess for more than 13 years. That's a long time. Maybe as long as he had his daughter around him.

@@Martyntd5 it is weird because that ''stalker'' trap scene was at the beginning i believe, it takes time for them to go from runner to stalker right? so how did bill have a stalker on his cam in 1 of the first days somewhere of the apocalypse is what im thinking. @TomTomson81
@TomTomson81 Жыл бұрын
@@tristanversteeg5738 Better living conditions promote better growth. The fungus feels more comfortable. There is no defined time when what reaches which size. That's life. I also can't tell you that you will be 3cm taller in 4 weeks because not everyone grows 3cm in that period. We don't all get the same size. Furthermore, the show calculates in years and not in hours, days or weeks. So you don't know how much time has passed. We only know that it has to be under a year, otherwise the show would have shown us. The fungus adapts to the circumstances. For some, the runner status is enough, others develop beyond it.

Finally got a chance to watch this episode, and I'm blown away. I absolutely love a post-apocalyptic story that focuses on the relationships between people, because really, what else is there? Oh yes! I agree that these can also serve as directional markers, but. I think it was the podcast where I heard it confirmed it was for Tess. I think it’s a sweet thing from a very reserved Joel. (I haven’t played the game.) (The main places you see these, as a memorial, are near mountains like Everest, for climbers that didn’t make it. They build big ones.) I just thought it was amusing that people would think handling rocks would help a broken hand. 😉

My take is what Joel said "the music is still on because is set to turn on if they don't stop the counter for a week". So, they died a week before the events of the show. Bill was a prepper, he even took time to write the letter, but I think the music signal would be too generic

The game story was better IMO. It’s as if the producers were scared to portray two gay men growing to hate each other just like most relationships. They put the “gay love” on a pedestal. The subtleness of the game narrative was more ingenious.

This is the best episode of a tv series that I’ve seen in many years. This is far and away better than the game scenario with Bill. The song at the end was what Bill & Frank were singing at the piano earlier. And the window shown at the end was, of course, the window Bill left open but also a callback to main menus of the games.

This was probably the best love story ever told in any show ever. One episode and I am crying uncontrollably. Spectacular writing and even more spectaculat acting. I have nothing more to say. This will go down in video game adaptation history.

LoL great job guys. really looking forward to see where this goes.

I got the feeling Frank was a little manipulative and kind of seduced Bill because he seen how good he had it. Great we have to great backstory though, different from the game. I didn't play it but I found the whole story in the game online, it was so good and the graphics felt as though I was really watching a movie, 3 hours long and that's just part 1, I haven't watched part 2 yet. It kind of spoiled the show but at the same time, they can do stuff like this in the show we don't get in the game version. It's remarkable how much it's like the game but they can do this wonderful backstory and make it that much more meaningful. Kind of disappointed Ellie didn't get to meet this person but they did a wonderful job with the deviations that I can't complain

I'm so torn by this episode tbh. It was a wonderful and incredibly beautiful episode and as a stand alone story, it might be my favorite so far. That said, I'm also kinda disappointed with it from a pure adaptation standpoint. Bill's Town and the parts surrounding it are my personal favorite parts of the whole game, so to miss out on all of that was also sad for me.

I agree completely, the magic of bill is that we get to see him be the hardcore survivor that never got his walls down and the opposite here! Just think about how in the games so much of the story is the notes and other collectibles, Joel literally gets the message we see here

Interactions are def good in the game but looking back on it...he only has less than 10 minutes of dialogue in the entire game. Hard to make a hour long episode accurate to the game. When he only talks for 10 minutes in the game. Would been nice to see some of it but did love the changes.

Hmm, I bet I'm on my own here, but a bit of a meh episode for me. I mean it was a touching, heart-warming story that would have worked really well as a stand alone episode or a webisode or something. It was really well produced but.... Well firstly, I'm not a romance kind of bloke. I'm an emotionally closed off, toxic male and it's taken me a lifetime of hard work to get there. I've buried my emotions under the patio where they belong. I dont appreciate TV shows making me feel stuff. If I wanted to cry, I'd watch England play football. On that point, I definitely didnt cry. Definitely not. If I walked into a room and everyone was watching a romance, I'd do the decent thing and leave immediately. Entertainment should contain guns and explosions, perhaps aliens or dragons and monsters ...or perhaps groups of men hitting a ball. These new shows have no business interfering with my feelings and it's their fault I'm going to have to go out and shoot a rabbit to make things right. I dont own a gun and the nearest rabbit is at Pets at Home, but that's not the point. ...and breathe ...OK now I've got that off my chest - half an episode of romance really isnt my thing. Yes, yes I know it was beautifully done, but I am what I am. The real thing that bugged me was I was really, really looking forward to this episode. In the game Bill's town was a high-octane ride. From Joel getting caught in one of Bill's traps and hung upside down, to a wild sequence of trying to bump-start the truck while getting rushed by runners. But I was really, really looking forward to Bill, Joel and Ellie doing battle with a boss monster. Those who've played the game, will know what I'm talking about (bit of a game spoiler but the OG game was 13 years ago, I'm pretty sure the rule is the gloves are off after a decade). All of that has gone and I'm disappointed. There was also some awesome back and forth between Ellie and Bill that we will never get. This was a really well done episode and joking aside, I did enjoy it. But I missed the OG content so much, that for me at least, the juice wasnt worth the squeeze.

I've loved Bill's character since 2013, and I was so disappointed by this episode. For what it was, it was amazing, but it could've been SO much more. The acting was great, but Bill didn't feel like Bill and had almost no similarities to the game character and they changed his entire story. They also skipped the whole over run high-school area that was one of the best parts of the game, we got almost no Joel and Bill interaction, and there was zero Bill and Ellie banter which is disappointing because it was hilarious in the game. The writers said that they'd stick the original story and not change it too much because that's how they ruined Game of Thrones but we're 3 episodes in, and they've already broke their promise.

It is some of the better parts of the game....but ellie has only 5 minutes of dialogue with Bill. It would have been nice to see but let's be real. Wasn't a fan tbh. The performances were good and the drama was moving, but the lack of relevance to the main plot was troubling (although I don't know what comes next so will reserve judgment to some extent). The series has been hit and miss for me so far. Didn't think much of eps 1 and 3 but loved no 2. It's very up and down.

I don’t mind the whole love story flashback idea, but they changed the evolution of their relationship too much in order to create a “fairytale ending” rather than the caustic reality of the game narrative. Gay men can grow to hate each other just like most straight couples eventually do in life. If producers are truly concerned with “representation,” they should represent the harsh realities as well as the good. Instead, they placed Bill and Frank on a pedestal rather than staying true to the source material.
