Until recently, many teachers only got one word of feedback a year: "satisfactory." And with no feedback, no coaching, there's just no way to improve. Bill Gates suggests that even great teachers can get better with smart feedback -- and lays out a program from his foundation to bring it to every classroom.

As a teacher’s kid, I’ve seen how underappreciated, underpaid, disrespected yet overworked teachers have been. The amount of paperwork they get is ridiculous, the school secretaries could do them and leave more time for teachers to really think through and plan their lessons (super important for new teachers). Personally, I know I could make a damn fine teacher, but having seen how it was like for my mom - no. Unless I’ve got nothing better to do. We get what we pay for - no wonder education systems in most countries are in shambles.

We are in 2019! this is my first year in university. After 3 years I'll be able to become an English teacher, I have the passion to help people to learn and become open-minded, not just in a way that they can learn English but to give them pieces of advice and teach them how to be good citizens and realize their dream. I know that education in Morocco sucks, but sometimes when I take a look at some teachers, they are so great, they helped to change and eleminate my negative thoughts ... unfortunatly they couldn't find a lot of open ears. If I become a teacher I'll try to change my students mentality and let them love studying.

Teachers are the real nation builders,their role cannot be overemphasized. Teachers are given feedback here in Edo state Nigeria, the governor has trained learning and development officers who give feedback to different teachers in different schools everyday,and we have seen a steady progress in education since the inception of the program

What I noticed is that it shows classrooms of around twenty students when in reality most of the classrooms in public schools the average is forty students per class. Also, with the automatic promotion, there is a wide diversity of skills among the students. The Math textbooks, for example are growing and growing in content that makes key information to stick less and less because it's expected to COVER more and more information in the same amount of time.

So simplistic and short-sighted. I am a former teacher and know of no teachers who have the time, energy, and resources to video tape themselves or watch extra teaching videos. When you're asking teachers to do more on top of the 60+ hours they already work each week, when they're already balancing second jobs and families, when they are up to their necks in paperwork and admin duties, you are asking too much. I would say that no amount of feedback and reflection is going to really matter until teachers are paid an honest and fair wage for their work, when they're given time to prepare for and do their jobs properly, and when they're allowed to actually teach. Until changes can be made improving time and wages for teachers, feedback won't really matter.

So important for teachers to receive feedback. I've taught English both in a class and in home-tutoring an individual. I've also taught social work students. In all cases, receiving feedback, in the form of supervision + evaluation ws critical to improving my understanding of what I was doing - and students being able to understand + improvie how they performed too.

Teachers NEED TO BE HEARD but the coach system has the unintended consequence of silencing them - too many power tripping coaches! My students made amazing progress WITH ZERO suggestions from the coach. I made all my improvements from seeking fantastic training outside of the classroom. Better ideas than a coach: REDUCE class sizes and see what a difference that makes. GET parents to listen to their children read at home for 20 plus minutes and see what difference that makes. EQUALIZE the ever spreading income gap, so parents have time to spend with their children, and you will be amazed. These things will change our education scores better than any coaching could ever hope to do. We need to address the problem correctly otherwise we are wasting our time here.

Unfortunately this system doesn't work in the college education system. There's no requirement or incentive for a professor to improve when they provide the service of research and bring in revenue that way. After all college is firstly a business, and secondly an education institution.

Trust must be present for teachers to buy in. Too many administrators look for ways to fire teachers rather than ask, How can we help this teacher who wants to be great, improve their skills? The problem is that the attitude of actualizing potential with respect to students is often not applied to teacher improvement. That is a shame, for we are all learners. Building a trusting and supportive environment for teachers can make all the difference. Also, too many teachers work in silos and refuse to collaborate with their colleagues. The whole culture needs to continue to change, everywhere.

The way society is has to do a lot with student success too. In the USA teachers aren't really respected we are constantly being doubted, overworked and undervalued. Teachers are to blame if test scores low or if students aren't performing well. But the issue is more than that! A child's education starts at home with the the parent. Nowadays parents aren't doing that and expect teachers to be the parents! We have to be the parents, the teachers, the nurse, the counselor, the family therapist, the police, etc ... Maybe first talk about parenting in this country and putting a priority on education than scratching the surface of the problem. I would welcome feedback, but let's get real here in why the USA isn't ranked at the top 5.

Raise teachers' salaries then! It requires a lot of work. It is not as easy as it seems to be able to perch that camera at the back of the classroom and write reviews and notes while all these admin, grading, attendance tracking, other nitty gritty stuff are waiting to be completed.

Seriously! The real difference between us and the example he gave of Shanghai is the time they gave teachers to work on their practice when they are not teaching. I want to challenge my self to video my lessons this year and reflect on them but as I thought about it I realize that it would take about an extra hour a day. I can't justify that when my schedule is already so busy.

I always thought it was something that every student did, but as I got older I realized it was not. At the end of every year I told my teachers what I liked best about the year (or semester) and what I disliked along with why. It had a wide range of responses from lengthy discussions to them telling me to go away.

Teacher retraining is also a great tool. I recommend Cambridge conferences (training) around the world for that. As for the cameras, I'm in for it. Though it may raise a lot of questions (I teach in a private school). For me, I have been using my computer (computer camera) to record the activities during the lessons. I can assure, feedback helps a lot.

This school year I gave 2 of my teachers feed back cause I beleived the class should be taught better and 1 teacher got replaced by request and the other didn't do anything differently. And now im just disengaged in class cause they truly don't care.

Teachers are one of the builders of the nation and I am not saying that just because I too am a teacher. But I guess the idea of a camera in a class is micromanaging and going to take away the spontaneity of a teacher’s facilitation. An alternative would be to provide teachers with a curriculum that includes everything expected from an ideal lesson. Train the teachers to deliver the content in the manner expected of them. Finally, organise regular assessments of the students and let the results talk. Teaching shouldn’t be a sting operation but fun for both teachers and students. #SucceedEng

Talked about Shanghai teachers' feedback from colleagues, that reminds me when I was in my elementary school in China. My teacher signed the students different roles before the class "show". We had the rehearsal about the class before the "show" started. Some students even be signed the roles of "wrong " answers. I wonder how many schools have done like this?

Not everyone gets the vision to be a teacher. I have seen there are plenty of teachers who only became teachers after they failed to get any other job. They are just doing the part-time work being a teacher. In essence, they are destroying the interests of the students. If some people become teachers according to their vision and vocation. They want to do something great for the students. But if we don't give them their required feedback then we destroy their interests to be a teacher. In this way, it is mutually harmful for teachers as well as for students.

I agree we need more support and feedback. However I am nervous when I hear national comparisons because that seems akin to the standardization we see in our standardized accountability testing with which the pedagogical world has identified so many inequities within. It also makes me nervous to compare teacher salary to the cost of a billionaire's system. Don't pay teachers less to improve their performance. We are already paid less than other professions with similar schooling and experience. That being said, I would also like to see different classroom populations taken into account. Who does a fantastic job teaching a specific concept to individuals with learning disabilities? Who is great at teaching a specific skills to individuals with emotional disturbances? Or other important factors such as ELL or individuals whose family culture differs from the Judeo-Christian norm, individuals who come from poverty, or individuals who have a language disorder. Lastly, I believe that more of a comparison with other countries's educational systems should be done. Korea puts much more focus on the emotional support of their students as opposed to the academic support our own (US) system champions above all else. Perhaps we also need a paradigm shift at the highest levels of education to encompass more than just academic achievement--and in doing so, perhaps our own country's academic achievement will improve.

Teachers in the U.S also have incentives for good scores on the standardized tests to make them look good. College professors are only worried about their ratings half the time. I have professors who have given me bonuses just to give them good reviews.

The best feedbacks for teachers are directly and indirectly given by theirs students. If they’re allowed to give their opinions and participate in the learning process, their contributions are unbelievably valuables and transforms the educational internal system. Specially if the teacher is open to build a close relationship with the students. It’s a magic, productive and extremely pleasurable experience! 🤩😉

We must also understand that sometimes it's not that the teaching is ineffective but it's the resources that are lacking that would help us teachers cater to the various learning styles (visual, tactile kinesthetic, audio, etc). I've been at schools at which there is and has been very limited teaching material that would help teachers do their job and sometimes the devices or material (that would help to make their lessons more interactive and interesting) aren't available and maybe costly for some teachers. If those could be made accessible to all teachers then the world would would definitely be a much better place. As many have declared, teachers haven't been rewarded or paid as much as they deserve and there's not enough money in the world that would suffice for the kind of service we render to all learners.

His argument assumes that the feedback provided will be crafted in a way that will encourage teachers to change their instructional methods. However, the evidence of the current system of evaluation, Bill Gate's team has sponsored, is very degrading towards teachers. The teachers are told that the top rank on the evaluation is not even possible to obtain. The phrase is "we visit the exemplary category, but that is not where we live." Imagine if students were told that obtaining an A in this class is not possible. That the students might get a couple As on select assignments, but they will not leave the course with an A. It kills ambition. Teachers, young and old, are leaving the profession and a small number of graduates are moving in to replace them. Personally, I had more passion for teaching while I was a student teacher than when I secured my first teaching position. The only good thing that came out of this program was the mentorship program. I can honestly say that I improved tremendously my first year as a result of the unbiased mentor who was assigned to just help me. This part is good, but the evaluation system destroys.

The difference is, a mentor is someone in-the-trenches, not someone on the outside telling you what your day-to-day performance should be, based on a short snip-it of analysis from someone who is not in the arena. The intention may be good but the result could be worse than expected. Every teacher who are called to help often becomes helpless because the final result lies upon the student. Though feedback is important, in a third world country where am in, there is more to look at what technology can help providing teachers the feedback, and that is, the state of majority of numbers of pupils or students who go to school without meals. That means, no matter how good the teacher can be, when the pupils or students are malnourished, the strategy of teachers won't work with the empty stomach of the kids. Technology advancement where Bill Gates carved his name is one best opportunity for some, but it leaves more numbers of young kids in the third world to be left uncared than what it can carry with it. I am a teacher myself, and my first teaching experience brought to my realization that most students from state colleges and universities are in their survival mode to get the degrees they want, land on the job they dreamed, and earn the money they thought can make their realities better. But they don't mind if they truly learn a thing they can bring on for life as long as they pass the curriculum and move up higher. And the teachers? They can be remembered but their lessons are forgotten.... So I left formal Academies and decided to focus more on self-empowerment and self-development, subjects where majority of formal school teachers are unequipped themselves. (Not all anyway!)

An interesting TED talk. I feel that the first qualification of a teacher should be that they are interested in people, then the subject. I can really get excited about teaching chemistry, but when the students do not seem to care I lose interest, Therefore, I am not a successful teacher. Some times the most challenging question to some students deals with home life and other challenges. It is easy to motivate yourself as a teacher when the students begin to show interest.

We need more valid and reliable research on this teacher feedback methodology before concluding that it's recommended for all. A few things to consider: 1) classroom sizes. 2) teacher's personality in general (e.g. do all teachers feel comfortable being recorded on camera? ) 3) students (e.g. do we assume that students behave well when they know that they're being recorded on camera? Or do they have a different set of personalities off camera? ) 4) measurement of students' academic performance and motivational levels with this method of feedback. Any correlation between them?

I"ve been a teach for 20+ years and my best feedback - the only feedback I take seriously - is the students themselves. When the teacher is hitting the mark, the students are more animated, they participate in class, creativity flows. Most of the time grades improve as well, but that's not my goal. I don't believe every student fits in the formal education box. If two way communication flows I'm doing my job - end of story

I am currently a junior in one of the top ranking public high schools in the nation.Every classroom has fancy electronic whiteboards, every language class has a $20,000 headphone system, and every student is issued a laptop.There seems to be the false perception that more technology equals better education.I do not disagree that technology can definitely help, but teachers are hands down, no argument, a million times more significant that fancy pieces of equipment.We need better trained teachers

Gregg Jones giving tough standards(they think "tough love") is okay for HEALTHY ADULTS. but these are a great variety of healthy and unhealthy CHILDREN. it's a shame that the politically powerful, elite, 'education with profit/choice' CC advocates haven't experienced the lives of the lower 50%, so, I think, they really don't understand the damage they are doing.

I so agree~^^ Students get both positive n negative feedbacks frm their teachers...not realizing that teachers too need feedbacks to keep improve their weaknesses or maintain creativity in their teaching approaches.

Done right, teaching at every level includes a feedback loop that informs the teacher of the effectiveness of each lesson. Starting with self evaluation and involving student feedback at several levels teachers can improve their performance every day. What is never talked about is the impact of bad behavior of students on student outcomes. To a degree teachers can and should be able to take care of the little to medium size problems that come up. But there are still schools in the U.S. where teachers are in cages to protect them from violence, rape and even murder. Once we solve these problems we will find that teachers in this country will rise to the top of the world stage due to the incredible training and dedication they have.

Not only the teachers need feedback, but the students also need to see how they work in the class. Of course the admins should hear the feedback from teachers, students and parents.
