Teachers emotionally support our kids -- but who's supporting our teachers? In this eye-opening talk, educator Sydney Jensen explores how teachers are at risk of "secondary trauma" -- the idea that they absorb the emotional weight of their students' experiences -- and shows how schools can get creative in supporting everyone's mental health and wellness.

This comment section is getting so toxic. We realize the students need support as well, and the speaker also makes that case. That’s why we’re there, because we want to support our kids and lift them up. Why can’t we help both students and teachers and not sacrifice one for the other? The fact that people are so defensive and feel that teachers like myself don’t need extra support than what we’re getting is why this problem exists. You don’t have to advocate for us, but there’s no reason to advocate against us.

I'm in a school in South Africa and it's crazy how teachers are being treated, not only by their superiors but the students too. These days, breaking teachers down mentally seems to be the main goal of the students. It's insane.

Did anyone have a favorite teacher ?, yes we all did, I guarantee you that teacher had the support of the system, his/her peers, and family, causing that teacher to pragmatically be better than some others. When we invest into the mental health of our teachers we predominately invest into our children. Just a thought.

@@shaunpatryck Shaun I was brought up by Vietnam vets in the class room who were largely ignored in Australia in the 80's, we also had corporal punishment being hit by the grace of a cane at the teachers discretion, it could've been different if all parties involved took more care of each others mental and otherwise health, anything less in the work place is inhumane. just my thoughts.

Let's start with making sure that teachers can afford to live and pay for all their bills. Not all teachers have the luxury of being a rich person's husband or wife. A lot of teachers, especially men have extreme stress not being able to provide for their families on a teacher's salary. This causes a ton of stress, which translates into poor performance as a teacher. Why have we decided as a society that teachers should be paid less than a McDonald's manager?

And colleges are feeding this dysfunction as well by hiring about 50% adjunct faculty, paying them less and denying benefits. These teachers often have no office hours and must take multiple jobs to make ends meet. They cannot be there for their students emotionally and are stressed out themselves.

Teachers should be allowed special benefits while wearing a newly created stole or cord in public. To let us all know how important they really are to our futures. Tax free lives up to 10k per year to offset spending on supplies for our kids, teacher discounts on menus at restaurants, special close parking spots > like for disabled and vets - to help them with time crunch schedules. And probably a lot more things that im not qualified to chime in on. Idk. All i know is that i had 2 teachers that changed the course of my life were my parents failed and i love them to this day for it.

I would say that at a minimum teachers should be allowed maternity/family leave. Most districts do not allow this, and teachers are forced to take sick days or personal days if they want to, I don't know, actually go to a hospital to have their babies and then spend a few days with their newborns. Other employment sectors offer this basic allowance, but not most school districts. Then, if a teacher has to take too many days off after having their baby because of complications, the school reserves the right to pink slip them. It's backwards, and not right.

When i pick my daughter up at school each day the teachers talk to the parents of the children who were trouble. One thing that is obvious is that the parents of these problem children are drug addicts. I have seen some parents picking their children up wearing pajamas an obviously haven't showered. One mother is so busy on her phone each day that she continues while the teacher is explaining what her child did that day. Sic

People in power don't care. Soon a teaching job will be as easy to get as what a taxi, carer or retail job is nowadays. Basic training ticked off to meet the basic criteria. They don't want passionate people that may create problems, they want nameless hands to fill the numbers they've promised..

Actually, it's quite the opposite. Just in order to get a credential, many districts demand you have a Master's Degree or better. This makes people unwilling to go into the teaching sector, as not only is a teacher underpaid (my district alone only offers $22,000 salary to starting teachers) and frequently unable to pay the majority of their bills, but they are also required to have the same amount of education of the psychologist who is making four times more than them. Then there is the problem of parents flat not respecting the teachers because "my child cain't do nothing wrong," and teachers having little to no backup from administration, which causes the students to be just a disrespectful. Did I mention that administrators make double and sometimes triple what their teachers do and the teachers do four times the work of the administrators? The entire system is backwards.

It is getting worse especially for old teachers Who are more experienced and competent and Who know exactly what they should do or not... My Mother is 54 years old and do you know what the problem is ?... She is desprite and unhappy with the whole educational system... The teacher becomes the victime of school... malcomprehension... sometimes of maltreatement... and unfortunately she or he does not find her or his dignity... her or his recognition...
