I grew up in the DC suburbs Northern Virginia in the 60s to early 70s. My parents split when I was fifteen. For a short time - and much against my will - I ended up moving to coastal Mississippi with my father. I'd heard about the kind of hate, racism and ignorance that characterized "the South," but to actually SEE it, and to actually see how self-righteously hideous these people were, was a great shock. I left there after several weeks, to go live with my mother in rural upstate NY, where she had gone to be with her family. Same god damn place. The same ignorance. The same racism. The same hatefulness. Good "conservatives" all.

Definitely a similar hate in the rural areas, but at least a good part of upstate NY is akin to the “blue collar rust belt.” They vote Democratic, and while they are more prone to have prejudicial views than a liberal city, they don’t literally think slavery was cool and evolution isn’t a thing like large areas of the south.

I grew up in rural North Carolina and rural New York is the most racist place I have ever been in my entire life. And while they all blame Democrats for ruining the state and driving people out, I actually left to get away from all the Trump-voting bigots. Granted, the south is still probably more conservative overall and people down there are more likely to openly say they don't like black people. But rural New Yorkers will start every sentence with "I'm not racist, but..." and nothing good ever comes after that.

What do you mean "touch that"? Touch it how? The North invaded it once and burned much of it, only for the South to go straight back to its old ways even before Reconstruction was over. Truth is, Americans love the South. Actions speak louder than words. When the South tried to secede, the country mobilized to keep it in the Union. And now, the South is growing fast because Americans from all regions are moving to it.

Especially regarding people who voted for a billionaire elitst and man who lives in a golden tower with his name in gold all over it...Donald trump.. it seems that being an elitist northern asshole doesn't bug the south or Midwest as long as they hate the left, hate Muslims, hate immigrants illegal or otherwise, champion white supremacy and christian theocracy and spout a bunch of right wing talking point horseshit... *Getting cheap laughs by making disparaging generalizations is beneath you, Bill.* Point out what you believe are the disparaging generalizations so we can go to actual facts to show if they're in fact disparaging generalizations...and not inconvenient truths you'd rather not admit or choose to dismiss.
