I'm impressed with Larry King's interviewing technique. He lets his guest finish his thoughts, doesn't interrupt or cut off the guest the way Stephen Colbert did with Bill Maher on his interview.

So you like apartheid. Good to know. That's your belief in jesus but others don't. Do you really believe that out of all the gods that have been created here on earth (over 2000) that yours is the correct one? The muslims believe they're correct just like the jews do. Have you ever stopped to think that where you're born determines which god you believe in? Probably not. Religion will be the downfall of the human race and we have people like you to thank for that.

@Y B you know a lot of Jews that think Jesus Christ lived and was a real person and don't hate him but a lot of Jews who understand the construct of Jesus Christ read up they realized that he was written about in order to quell the Rebellion in Jerusalem there was a large Rebellion there that needed to be put down and somebody in a very powerful family called the Flavians decided to create this new Messiah and they felt like that if they made him someone to follow who was peaceful and loving that it would at least slow down the violence In Jerusalem at the time if you read how it all came about you will find that the story of Jesus Christ was just that it was a story I mean think about it how much do you know or how much could you write about anything that happened 40 years prior I mean come on if you get 10 people in a room and repeat the same sentence in 5 minutes the story will change. So how accurate do you think the gospels were or how accurate you think all the details of his life work do some research and you'll find that the story of Jesus Christ is a myth and that is all.

While Bill isn't always on point about every issue (who is), he does make a lot of good observations about the world. I find it quite hypocritical and absurd that so many people have this unrealistic standard for others, but simultaneously keep their blinders on regarding their own intellectual and moral prowess. I see a lot of nuance, yet so many are ready to divide into tiny niche categories. Open mindedness will always be a more admirable quality to me than rigid traditionalism. Bill Maher strikes me as one who does value progress (overall) and is in tune with most of the world around him. He lacks some perspective at times, but again, who doesn't.

From an English born 73 year old man who now lives in the Netherlands, and also lived in Washington DC in the mid sixties, and who lived in the smame apartment block as Ronald Reagan and sat near him in the swimming pool.< apologies if that is a bit rambling; it's just to set up my context. I want to explain to Americans that their use and understanding of the word "socialist" is nothing like that of Europeans in general. Europe in general is not socialist. The backbone of their culture and economies is private enterprise. Via taxation some state money is used in some aspects of the economy, namely health and infrastructure. The make up of state aid varies from country to country. In spite of the EU, "Europe" as the Americans often label it, is a non existent entity. there are constant moves afoot to integrate it further, but these are and will be problematic. It is clearly difficult for example, to see Germany and Greece as equal members in the same club. So Europe in general is not "socialist". Depending on electoral results more or less of the economy may or may not have state subsidy. For confirmation, just check any list of European companies. And by the way, this is being written in the country that had the first stock exchange. I chose this posting to explain this as Bill Maher sometimes uses the term socialist Europe, which is misleading. I enjoy Maher, and wouldn't wish ro undermine him. This "socialist Europe" misunderstanding is commonplace in the US. Another important perception from the standpoint of European people is that politics in the US is heavily idealogically based, whereas European countries tend to be more pragmatic. The political choice in European countries is also more extensive. For example, in the last round of general elections in the Netherlands, one could choose from around 40 parties. In view of that it is perhaps not surprising that I find the US and the UK (which effectively also has a 2 party system) the least democratic of all the democracies. Their systems are therefore urgently in need of reform. For example, David Cameron, ex UK Prime Minister, had absolute power in the House of Commons with approx. 36% of the vote. Likewise Trump had approx 3m less votes than Clinton. Well, it doesn't need an Einstein to figure out that there's something wrong here !!! I hope any readers find this informative. I like to think I have no axe to grind; I do not always vote for the same party; but I am a concerned citizen who feels the democratic world is in a bit of a perilous state at the moment. Brian Fenwick Oosterbeek, the Netherlands. PS Can't resist the opportunity to plead for a correct pronunciation. As someone who lives within a few kilometers of a museum choc full of van Goghs, I am frequently up close and personal with a great many of his paintings. so I have to say to Americans in general, there is no such person as van Go. His name is van Ggggghhhhhog. Look up the pronunciation via the internet. PPS The US is goverrned, or if that is too strong, heavily influenced by it's corporations.

I live in a country that's had both FPP and proportional representation, and PR has an equally perverse outcome in many elections where a small party becomes kingmaker and thus exercises hugely outsize sway over policy (New Zealand). It's also a little less stable (Italy), and in a list system, can enable political parties to be completely dominated by their backroom operators (Everywhere). So IMO, theres not necessarily a need for reform of the actual voting system at all. Tweaks to their existing formulae would suffice. Re: Europe's socialism, if you define socialism as state ownership of the economy, then no, Europe isn't socialist. If you define it as control of the economy or widespread redistribution, you should probably conclude that large parts of Europe are socialist. Particularly thinking France, Belgium, Greece, the Nordic countries, etc. When government is spending over 50% of GDP, which is the case in those countries, it's hard to argue that the government doesn't have widespread control over the economy, right? Seeing as they directly control an absolute majority of national income, and that's excluding the influence they wield through regulation? Also IIRC Conservatives + UKIP handily beat Labour + Lib Dems, yes? It's remarkable how many champions of PR for the UK disappear when they realise UKIP pulled 10% in 2015.

Thanks to all the above for your clearly knowledgeable responses. A few responses to the responses. In order. Not liking van Go is not intellectual snobbery; I shudder at the thought. It just sounds ridiculous, and is uneccessary. I didn't understand the omission of the R consonent. As far as I know I pronounce all my R's. There are differences of course in English usage twixt the US and UK. Have no problem with that; in fact sometimes I prefer the American way. I have Websters and Oxford dictionaries. As for PR agin FPP, of course they are plusses and minuses on both sides. I think it's a question of which is the least worst. In the case of the UK Cameron's 36% shouldn't have given him an overall majority in the House of commons. Likewise, there's no way Humpty Trumpy (

"Good noW!"®,B"H. He misses the point of Royalty. Why are there trees, flowers, grass? Each has its own part to play. None is superior. We are in G-'ds world. Respect is due to all as Royalty not weeds. That's why we need Royalty & trees & to know there is a rule of Law, a High Court, to set the example we must follow. It's not about ID, jealousy them vs me! It's about purpose how i serve G-d's purpose that recognises you are subjects of the true King by living up to the standards He expects us to emulate, as He does Who sets the laws of nature in their place as He has since the day of Creation, each ordained from that moment to their place! Ask yourself do you accept the word of G-d or not? If you do then live up to His expectation of you as one who serves in G-d's realm. We all have an equal part to play as king or trees & others in their own way, each as important as the next. Accept your part & live it!

You can’t help but respect Maher. He has been doing a talk show for ages now and yeah, he is pretty jaded on some issues; for a guy that takes baseball so seriously he sure doesn’t have ANY respect for the world of bicycle racing but that is no surprise being an American. I really like the fact that he generally knows enough to form a decent opinion on just about anything but isn’t so rigid like some people in entertainment that are so fond of fame and celebrity to where they think it makes them a better person because people know who they are. I like his show and his ‘no BS’ personality, in that way he reminds me of the late, great George Carlin and somewhat of Dennis Miller but he hasn’t turned into as much of a curmudgeon as Miller.

I am a Muslim and I think Bill is absolutely right about how we treat people who criticise our religion. Which is completely wrong even in the context of our own religion. A religion that encourages the acquisition of knowledge and asking questions should not treat people who criticise logically like that. The same is true regarding the apostates and how Muslims perceive them

That's because so many people think militant atheism is mainstream atheism. Militant atheists claim there is no god and no afterlife, which is as much a factually absent belief as any religion. Mainstream atheists don't claim an absence of god or an afterlife, they point out the fallacies in religious arguments to show that there is no conclusive evidence pointing to their existence, which is a totally different line of thought.
@CustomTies
@CustomTies 6 жыл бұрын
I have never come across the term main stream or Militant atheists anywhere in Europe, we are just atheists. It isn't even an issue no one even even talks about it here but here on the internet it is discussed a lot more. it must be a concept in the very religious US. Atheists do not believe there are any gods its that simple.

Loved this. Two people who one could disagree with, and still remain friends. People who can change their minds because they allow themselves to be swayed by a good counter-argument. People who don’t put their ideas into concrete. People who have a degree of doubt about their convictions; they think something, but they may be wrong, and the other person may be right, and they have the confidence to admit that out loud. Believable people.
