Jon sto, and? Under Trump, drone strikes have skyrocketed. What is the point of bringing up something that Trump is doing more of, as if there's an argument there? Jordan, we all need to realize that the Republicans are bound and determined to undermine the investigations and push propaganda at their voters so that they feel justified in doing nothing when Mueller finishes his investigation. That's all the Nunez, House Intel Committee, and talking heads for Fox and clones are working on. Pushing propaganda so they won't have to act when the time comes. They will not do ANYTHING to stop Trump, unless maybe he launches nukes unprovoked. And even then, it is doubtful. The only solution is to vote like our lives depend on it, because they do. And hope that Trump doesn't decide to refuse to leave the White House, leaving us with a desperate, history defining situation on our hands.

As a European who has spoken to people from all over Europe, we all agree that the US can no longer be trusted. They promise one thing, even sign official agreements, and all it takes is an election and the next dumbass will pull out simply because he doesn't agree with it. Why would we ever want to enter an agreement with the US again if we have no guarantee whatsoever that the next guy will honour that agreement?
@Gottenhimfella6 жыл бұрын
You got that right. Trust is earned when agreements are kept. Only bullies and delusional people consider trust to be an entitlement owed to them because of status, and the same applies at the level of nations. We used to forgive American exceptionalism because it was counterpoised by many fine and sometimes even exemplary virtues, but with the advent of G W Bush, all that goodwill started to trickle away (an unkind person would say he piddled it away) Since Trump, that trickle became a veritable torrent, and there's sod-all left.

Adam Jacobs Don't worry, the Canadians would help if it ever happened. Some would scoff at what I'm about to say, but many Americans would likely flee to Canada and many would desert the American army to join the Canadians and fight the dictator in the name of democracy. Canada is too tied economically and socially to the USA to stand by and do nothing. That's just how it is and since Canada will be involved, I'm going to guess that many members of the Common Wealth will be as well, by alliance.

You all responding here do realize the rest of the world has its own problems? Ever since I saw the news stories about Buddhists killing Muslims, I assumed we were on our own. If "peaceful" people such as the Buddhists could be murderous to Muslims who weren't terrorists, then what chance do we have in a country oblivious to the fact that it wasn't founded on religious principles, but was a business enterprise from jump street? The early explorers didn't care about spreading religion, they cared about making money. Pilgrims weren't supplied by like-minded religious leaders, but by businessmen who wanted a return on their investments. Once the far-right gets what they think they want, it'll be too late for them to WAKE UP AND REALIZE THAT THEY'VE BEEN HAD.

Cap'n HeeHee I'm an atheist, but there is an old diction where I come from that goes as so " Help yourself and the heavens above will help you". You cannot rely on God if that is your belief, you must first rely on yourself. Take action and find others to take action with you. Together you are stronger than alone. When you think you can't do anything, think again.
@capnheehee81036 жыл бұрын
I am also an atheist, and I used the phrase only as a saying. I'm doing all I can. So many of my fellow Americans are so intellectually lazy in 2018, though. They do not pay attention, and bottle up the news they consume to limited little snippets that never mention any story that illustrates exactly how deranged the Orange Mad King really is. I'm telling you, we are in trouble. Not because of what the people who understand how badly we are in trouble and exactly how insane it is that this narcissistic Alzheimer's patient is leading the the country are failing to do (though we could be doing better -- get off your asses and social media and get out and protest, people, do your time, Jikook is right about that). It's mostly because there are stubborn souls in this country that have been brainwashed slowly over the last few decades to believe in conspiracy theory and that they should take pride in their ignorance and inflexibility. It's going to be the fall of us. It is depressing the hell out of me. :(

As is often the case, Bill's right on the money. I wish he weren't, but he is. And as if all of this weren't sufficiently depressing and sobering, consider the following highly plausible scenario: Trump loses the popular vote in 2020 by an even bigger margin than in 2016, but gets another four years courtesy of the electoral college.

Like it or not, the founders were somewhat naive and believed that only persons with a strong belief in the republic would ever want to hold public office, or at least that they would make up such a majority that the few unethical ones would be powerless. The founders were, however, wise enough to recognize that they were not perfect, and future generations would need to amend the constitution, as we do right now.
@greatwolf53726 жыл бұрын
Gilgamesh Yeah I don't understand the need to glorify the Founding fathers. They were people, and just like any other, quite flawed and stupid in many respects.
@LuizAlexPhoenix6 жыл бұрын
Wise? They? Debatable. They clearly thought of themselves as the first among equals. They considered themselves worthy of the power and that the mob ought to be kept at bay. They didn't realized some of that class of rich and powerful would not have the same ideals as them. That someone could be different and still be elected, that someone could put their short term goals ahead of the nation's long term objectives and ideals. They were too arrogant to realize that they were flawed and that their system could be played. If anything, they meant it to be a game with marked cards. They just thought no one would steep lower and risk more than they would. They used themselves as the archetype for perfection. "Sure, they can be different. But anyone different would be less capable and, therefore, not elected."
@StrigidaeStrigiformes-sv6mj6 жыл бұрын
The founders were not so wrong. Sure they were a bunch of gaping assholes. But they had the right idea given how they could not be tyrannical like their oppressors, from the the monarch system, but had to maintain order. This recent collapse is not due to the constitution. It is made by the people who abuse and distort their freedoms... neglect their responsibilities and are not vigilant against apathy and sloth.

The founders had an abysmal underestimation of the power the US would eventually wield, they expected that we'd never go beyond a regional power able only to defend ourselves locally and designed the country with this in mind.
