As a Spurs fan there are 3 single plays that break my heart. Fisher's with 0.4 seconds, Manu's foul and Ray Allen's 3. It's mind blowing to think Duncan could have had up to 8 rings if not for those 3.

Ray Allen's three was on Pop. Duncan was not in the game for the free throw attempt. All the Spurs needed was a defensive rebound. One of the best defensive rebounders was sitting on the bench.

after some of the Spurs bad playoff losses like the derek fisher shot or when the Thunder beat them in the western conference finals. most players like him wouldve just gave up and left and gone to another team thinking it would be all better. Tim's competitiveness and humbleness shows alot about him. greatest players of all time.

@@Armando_Brown32 because McCaw is a better player than Barkley was? Duncan wasn't winning rings in Garnett's shoes, they had awful talent and coaching, devastating injuries/luck, and KG did great in the few years he had with good teammates. There are obviously many good arguments for why Duncan was better than Garnett, I personally think Duncan just barely edges out KG, but rings is just a dumb argument, swap their situations and in all likelihood KG's the one with more rings.

Yeah it's insane to think Duncan has been 3 single plays away from having between 6 and 8 rings. I think they would have beat that Heat team the year the Mavs lost and it probably would have been a toss up against the 04 Pistons (just like in 05 when they played.)

In 2003, PF Duncan scored easily when rarely guarded by the less mobile C Shaq. In 2003 Shaq was guarded by Robinson or Malik Rose as Rose was the most effective defender of Shaq in Shaq's prime I ever saw. In 2001 and 2002, the Spurs were unhealthy and aging (in 2001 Tim Duncan and Steve Kerr were coming off of knee surgery, Sean Elliot was playing after a kidney transplant, and team aging; in 2002, the aging Spurs were rebuilding with 19 year old Tony Parker and 4 players over 35 years old.

Yes, that '06-'07 stretch when LA started Smush Parker, Kwame Brown, Chris Mihm when he wasn't hurt, and relied heavily on Brian Cook. Even if Kobe was the 2nd best player on LA, he was still All NBA on both ends of the court and a top 3-5 player in the NBA each year they met in the playoffs. Some of his best moments have come vs SA (the entire 4 game sweep in '01, clutch shots and game winners in '02, his game 4 in 2004, and the '08 CF. If Duncan is 1 in his era, Kobe is 1A, or vice-versa.

Boston was the heavy favorites to land the first overall pick in the '97 NBA Draft. Many thought Duncan was going to be a Celtic. And Bill Simmons, the narrator, is from Boston and a huge Boston sports fan.

Most underrated point in Duncan's favor: In the 2004 Olympics, he was by far the best player on the court for the USA, despite international rules making it much tougher on post players (wide key in the low block, zones allowed), and was the 2nd leading scorer (leader was Iverson who shot 38% to Duncan's 57%), and the USA losses mostly consisted of Duncan getting the ball, immediately being double or triple teamed, and passing back out to the wings who mostly just shat themselves.

The 2004 Lakers were still better than the Spurs so that one doesnt haunt me as a lifelong Spurs fan.....but the two that despite all the success will always haunt my dreams is 2006 and 2013...We were clearly the best team that year...should have been 7 rings and counting.....that being said I am so proud of the Spurs...they are the epitomy of what a true team is.

3 of those 4 times Kobe won, he was part of a "2 of the best 3 guys in the league" tandem when Duncan was the only top 20 player on the Spurs. The amazing thing that is Kobe lost 2 of them (both by being blown out at home to clinch the series). 50 years from now, people will say "They had Shaq & Kobe AT THE SAME TIME and only won a title 3 times in 8 years?" Put Kobe on the 2003 Spurs and they fall in the first round like the Lakers did when Kobe was the only top-20 guy on his team.

In 2003 Shaq and Duncan guarded each other a lot late in their playoff series. Duncan went for 64 and 30 in the final 2 games, often taking the ball right at Shaq. Shaq went for 51 and 22. 2001, yeah, the Spurs got embarrassed by LA, but in 1999 the reverse was true (and 2nd-year Duncan guarded Shaq great in that series when Robinson went out). Also in 2002 it didn't really make a difference who guarded Duncan, he was unstoppable but his team let him down.

Frankly, I can't decide who was better. Shaq was more dominant, but Duncan is way more versitile. Also, I think Bill really admires TD humility, Shaq adored the spotlight and was always trying to be in it. I also think Shaq came into the league at a better time for a big man. He had to fight prime Ewing, Robinson, Daugherty, Olajuwon etc. , and he seemed to be able to contend with these names even in his young age. I will give Shaq the best C and TD the best PF of their generation.
@Statalyzer
@Statalyzer 11 жыл бұрын
It's not irrelevant, it's a comparison of performance in the FINALS vs the exact same team, and I didn't bring up the feud at all. But since you did, there's a reason Duncan never lost a playoff series that can be partially blamed on interpersonal problems he was involved in. Not making people hate playing with you is part of being a great player. Fair point on Shaq/Wade, but Shaq when healthy in 2005 & 2006 was still excellent (including a #2 in MVP voting).

It took C Shaq until about his 3rd or 4th year in the NBA before his team defeated C David Robinson and the San Antonio Spurs. Yes, Shaq had the stats early on, but Shaq was not the consistent pressure player that he, Shaq, later became with experience.
@Statalyzer
@Statalyzer 11 жыл бұрын
In fairness to stamps, Shaq did guard Duncan as well as anybody in the league did. Likewise, Duncan guarded Shaq at least as good as guys like Mutombo and Wallace did. The "story" was strength vs finesse, but Shaq was more agile than he gets credit for and was quick enough to stay with Duncan, and Duncan was strong enough to make Shaq work with all the post moves he had rather than just backing down for easy dunks like he could do on most guys.
@score1952
@score1952 11 жыл бұрын
Again, in their primes, C Shaq rarely guarded the much more mobile PF Duncan. Even more rarely PF Duncan guarded C Shaq. The Spurs in that era used C Robinson and PF Malik "The Shaq Stopper" Rose to guard C Shaq. Almost as soon as Shaq left the Lakers, Malik Rose left the Spurs as Malik Rose was kept on the Spurs as Rose was so effective in keeping Shaq off of the blocks down low always forcing Shaq far from the basket with Malik Rose's superior lower body strength against Shaq.

Timmy has more MVPs than Shaq or Kobe and more Finals MVPs than Kobe. Sure Kobe has more rings, but Timmy was more dominant in his Finals appearances than Kobe. This is coming from a Kobe fan too. Timmy has been silently dominating the league since the late 90s but his "boring" style constantly gets him overlooked for the flashier choice. Best power forward hands down and best player of his generation.
