I've lightened my view on this movie since I posted this video. Definitely over exaggerated how bad it is. It's still very enjoyable, despite the changes made to it. Though it's definitely odd at some points. I still want to see a new English dub of the originals, however.

I've come to realize that with regards to Digimon, there are two camps. Those who watched Digimon later (and missed the original dub airings of the first two seasons) / those who watched non-English localizations usually have a harsh view of the dubs. The other camp loves the dubs because they remember going into the movie theater or watching at home and that nostalgic feel of the music and voice acting (digirap included) forgoes the changes that were made. Remember that to this latter camp, the dub was Digimon, they didn't know about the subs, it was just another cartoon to them that came to encapsulate the good vibes of growing up in the late 90's early 00's. Remember that before Allstar became a meme, most kids heard it first on the Digimon the Movie soundtrack. Hell, it was the first time I heard the Barenaked Ladies band. Lets also not forget the dub soundtrack had its gems "Lets Kick it Up" and "Here we go". I think it's mainly due to the fact that the Digimon anime never had as big as an audience, and after the original runs, it was neigh impossible for a kid or young adult to watch the older shows (therefore they had to find the sub versions on the internet) which leads to this split in opinion. You never hear about dub haters for Pokemon (AFAIK), for instance.
@jbwarner86262 жыл бұрын
Oh, dub haters for Pokémon exist, for sure - and I know because I used to be one of them. There was a time in my life when I utterly refused on principle to refer to any Pokémon characters (either humans or Pokémon themselves) by their American names, and made it at point to always try and convince people what they were missing by only watching the dub, with its cheesy dialogue and different background music. In the end, I realized it wasn't really a hill worth dying on and got over myself 😆

@ProlificPops3 жыл бұрын
@@wgmoney96 The part that actually needed narration, but didn't get it, was that time jump between the 1st and 2nd segment of the movie. Because that'd throw off anyone who hadn't watched the original series with the introduction of all the "new characters" (the other DigiDestined). That time jump between the 2nd and 3rd segments needed narration too but the story for that part of the movie got so butchered that it probably wasn't even that necessary at that point. The rest of the narration was kind of not needed.

crashdumy 16 Two reasons for that A. They’re trying not to encourage stranger danger. Stranger danger is less of an issue in Japan but it is an issue in the west. B. More a fun fact than anything, Japanese do address strangers with familial terms sometimes. Like they’ll call a random old woman Obasan (grandma). And a younger man might be called Nisan (big brother) by children who don’t know him. It’s similar to how we use ma’am or sir but less formal.

Then cue the Digimon rap, the noticably shorter time, the removed scenes, the few plot-related inconsistencies, Koromon talking after he evolved into Agumon and Greymon, the change in music and dialogue and the made-up plotline with Wallace which was frustrating to me because I liked Wallace so much he become my fifth favorite Chosen Child for a time. Ugh...Americans are just so stupid when it comes to violence..I highly doubt any children watching that part would be scared. I just hope they decide to dub these individual films separate in the future and leave them uncut.

So basically the dub wasn't the issue it was the pacing and jokes that ruined it, which isn't the voice actors fault at all really. Personally this comical style of dubbing was used a lot back in the early 2000's and 90's it was opted into with such anime as ghost stories and evangelion 2 complete fucking classics for different reasons of course.

Ghost Stories is not the best example it was like that because its original story was so awful no one liked it. As a result the dubbers were given pretty much free reign as long as the ghosts were still defeated the same way, which actually makes it the most hands off dub regarding its original creators. Going completely off the rails like they did was probably the only way anyone would ever enjoy it.
@LittleKasai6 жыл бұрын
I know that, that's why I used it as an example of how lax dubbing used to be and why it made the shows great. I loved the Digimon movies dubbing and I really enjoyed the parts where because of the disjointed pacing the dubbers and writers make fun of it.

Honestly getting a satellite uplink wouldn’t have been expensive, but everything else would nearly impossible and a pain in the ass. Assuming the protagonists have a satellite dish for their television, which is likely considering the setting, then they’ve got half the stuff they’d need as they’d have a way of connecting to a satellite, as the dish which normally functions as a downlink should work as an uplink. The other thing they’d need would be a military-grade code-breaking computer and a few hours to hack their way into the military satellite, and some way of preventing the government from kicking them off the satellite and the U.S. Navy/U.S. Army nuclear launch codes or ANOTHER military-grade code-breaker and a few hours to guess the nuclear launch codes. And it’d be a fucking pain in the ass to do as they’d need A THIRD military-grade encrypting/decrypting machine to encrypt and decrypt signals going to and from the satellite. And there’s no way the U.S. Military would let the protagonists launch a nuke that easily. So the uplink would be cheap, but everything else would be bankruptingly expensive. And almost impossible. Fun fact: if this film was set in the 60’s, the protagonists launching a nuke by accident would be more believable as the nuclear launch codes were literally seven zeros. 0000000 were the American nuclear launch codes until the 70’s. No kidding.

I'm pretty sure that Mew Mew Power is a worse American adaptation. Sure, 4Kids is an easy target, but even for them it's just lackluster, to put it nicely. The whole Digimon movie isn't bad. The first two parts hold up nicely. It's the third that's the weak spot. Ironically, critics generally preferred the Digimon movie to the Pokemon movie. More ironic, as much crap as it gets, the movie was still a box office sucess, which is really saying something when Hey Arnold's movie couldn't even break even. I'm surprised there wasn't a "What'chu talkin' 'bout Willis" joke in here.

I LOVED the experience of watching it as a kid, and I have a TON of nostalgia for it, especially the soundtrack....I remember watching certain parts of the movie over and over just to hear the music. I do think that the movie being made out of the first 2 portions would be the most effective. The first is 20 minutes, and the 2nd is 45 minutes. That's 65 minutes of material. Opening titles, ending credits, Tai as the narrator, and some kind of bridging montage to cover the time-gap in between the two parts....and you EASILY have a super lean, mean, 75-80 minute feature film that would have felt much more satisfying than the weird hodgepodge 3rd act that we got in the finished movie. I would love to see some sort of special cut of that original movie that sort of re-crafts it with only those original 2 pieces.

I must say... I love this cut! I really do. I can understand that hardcore fans of the japanese original are disappointed that so much of the third movie got cut out and the Angela Anaconda short film was just weird, but aside from that I really loved the movie for what it was. I only know the german version, which was based on the english one, but I found it incredibly creative how they cut these seperate stories together. To me it just works. Honestly, now that I have watched the japanese versions, I even think it works better this way. The story was more streamlined, the music fit way better and the added humor was just great! I don't care what critics say about how they think "dumb" children perceive quality. I don't think I ever felt more epicness as a kid than when watching this movie. It accomplished something barely any movie ever could: It made me geniunely terrified of the villian! The virus! Look at that thing! Especially when it was a spider! Holy shit! That was THE horror for me! And watching my childhood heroes fighting it - in this recognizable but kinda more mature (and creepy) artstyle no less - was a total adrenaline rush. And when Omnimon finally smashed that horrifying thing, it just felt weirdly real. I felt like my childhood heroes just really defeated something I feared and saved the day. I really wish more movies would be able to overwhelm me like this. I very appreciated that they connected it to the Adventure 02-characters. Maybe that's because in Germany the second season had reached almost the end of the first half at the time the movie came out. Only the appearance of Raidramon confused me because that didn't happen yet but I already knew the characters. As I said, I understand why people have problems with it, but to me this movie is the best example of localization working out.

Watching the original three Japanese specials and Digimon: The Movie back to back, it seems pretty clear that the Western adaptation ended up being perfect for 90s kids. Very little was changed in the Our War Game portion, which is easily the strongest act of the movie, and what was changed makes sense for the intended audience. I really do prefer the sound design and soundtrack changes (both very, very noticeable in Our War Game), and it wouldn't be the same without the ska/punk, or that hearty Greymon voice. The overarching narration tying it all together also provided a lifeline for the less initiated.

"Not a single theater showing this film was that full" Bruh. I saw this movie opening weekend and it was packed to the gills. We almost couldn't find open seats in a theater that was showing it in three full-sized screening rooms. This movie was equally as popular and hyped as the first Pokemon movie at the time among the target demographic. They even copied Pokemon and handed out exclusive limited-run cards from the Digimon Trading Card Game to people who saw it within the first four days. The Digimon Movie is definitely a mess, but I wouldn't go nearly as far as calling it a tragedy. The humor is pretty on point for the American dub, and none of it seems out of character. That dumb bit with Davis having a meltdown and then immediately getting over it is exactly something I could see english Davis doing in the show. And I'll fully admit to this being nostalgia, but watching Greymon go full tilt against Birdramon while the english Digimon theme kicked in was the most hype shit my dumb 11 year old ass had ever experienced. Same with seeing Omnimon for the first time and watching him fight. I still get goosebumps watching them lol. And again, this is pure nostalgia talking and I won't fault you for not digging it, but the DigiRap is a fucking jam and I will die on that hill. I'd argue the first Yu-Gi-Oh movie is the worst anime film of all time. Literally just two dudes standing in place shit-talking each other over a game of holographic Go Fish for an hour or so.
