This song is a great relief to those struggling to process such thoughts. Her answer is to process the feelings and let them pass through you instead of suppressing. That's how all her songs have a way out no matter how impossible it feels. That optimism is clear from a scene in her documentary film when her real-life mother intervenes while she's writing these very lyrics.

Billie did go through a period of time when she was suicidal. She used to self harm. There’s video of her mom coming to the door when her and Finneas were putting this song together and questioning Billie about the lyrics. Asking if they really wanted to go this dark on a song..and if she was seriously implying that she’d jump off the roof. And Billie replies with a very good answer. She tells her mom, “this song is the reason I DON’T do it. I feel it’s better to have said it than actually DOING it.”

Billie wrote this at a very dark time in her life. There's a scene in her documentary where her mom is very worried about her and asks her why she wrote such a dark song. Billie replies that singing about it helps her not want to do it.
