Do you think you have what it takes to become an empowering, inspiring, and motivating leader? Are you looking for ways to improve your leadership skills so that you can make a larger impact on the world? On this episode of Impact Theory, Tom Bilyeu is joined by author and Co-Founder and Co-Executive Chairman of ‘The Carlyle Group’ David M. Rubenstein to discuss such matters and more as they explore what it takes to become a leader and how you can start leading more in your daily life.
They discuss the core principles of what makes a good leader, how wealth during your youth can stifle your progress, how hardships and failures are key to becoming a good leader, how success and happiness are tied, why persuasion is key to any great leader, what we can learn from Abraham Lincoln’s leadership, what the American DNA is and how it creates natural leaders, the power of reading, why you should become a master of one skill, and much more.
Order David’s book, ‘How to Lead: Wisdom from the World's Greatest CEOs, Founders, and Game Changers’: amazon.com/dp/1982132159/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_1Fo-FbKZ6NMY4

“If you grow up in an extremely wealthy family, if your father is worth $10-billion dollars, you might not have the drive to do the kind of things you need to do to win a Nobel Prize or a Pulitzer Prize or something else. If you grow up in a modest family, you know if you’re going to get anywhere in life, you’ve got to do it on your own.” [6:33]
“You can’t be insecure. If you’re insecure, you surround yourself with people that are not that good, and great people surround themselves with people that are smarter than them.” [36:54]
“…you have to have a vision of where you want to go, you have to persist in it, you have to be willing to overcome failures, and not be afraid of making a mistake.” [49:16]

“You Are the Master of Your Attitude. You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control the way you think about all the events. You always have a choice. You can choose to face them with a positive mental attitude.” Roy T. Bennett

Maybe you just have a “feeling “ that you can always control your attitude... or that you can choose to have whatever attitude you feel comfortable with. This is as a result of your genes and up to date conditioning ..both of which are outside of your control. What you feel you are able to do may not be the experience for others as their genes and conditioning are different. For example felt I could choose to write this rather than not write it. But also realising it really doesn’t matter that I did or indeed if I hadn’t. Like your choosing to call yourself Motivation and self improvement. Who is being motivated and what improvements do you need? Its called buying into the arrival myth ...if I do this or get that I will be more complete.... and you will go on doing this having never arrived, until your final breath.

As a black woman, I was getting angry hearing him praise Lincoln. But, then he acknowledged the racial truths & his own priviledge. I am astounded at his balanced views. It seems so few rich whites can admit what he did. Quite a refreshing & shocking interview. Can't wait to look up his book.

Can you please explain that about Lincoln? Hollywood is selling the idea that he freed you from slavery. It's everywhere, at least in Europe.
@kimberlyv3283
@kimberlyv3283 3 жыл бұрын
@@ohenryable He did free us from slavery, but that was not his mission. His mission was to not have the country split in 2 under his presidency. That's what he cared about. He even said that he didn't care whether we stayed slaves or not as long as the country doesn't split. He also gave speeches where he made the crowd laugh at the idea that black ppl could b considered equal to whites. There was no way we were as "human" as whites in his view.

Such an interesting perspective from an intelligent man 💫 Behind the curtains of the heros and history, it's usually young, wealthy, white men who procrastinated, forgot dates, and viewed humans as property 🙃 Usually we think everything was so intentional, poetic, and methodical, and it's typically not. Ironically enough, these stories inspire me. Makes me think about what we can accomplish when we really try 😏 Tom, I will forever love your interviewing style and thoughtful questions 🙏🏾 Thanks for having him on!

The core of leadership starts with you as an individual. Your self-leadership! It is the same with the much-discussed word "Sustainability" and the meaning of it. Here the same thing applies, the core of Sustainability starts with you and me. If you as a person don't function in any way. Nothing else matters! It is also surprising to see that Social skills and intellect seem to be gone. Most people are screaming at each other. #be #intellectually #curious #selfleadership

The beginning was great but slowly felt it was turning into 'America is great' campaign. US has its pros for sure but the flaw is to see the greatness in every country, to take opportunity to succeed. The world is vast and people come at times also because jobs are not available (full in other countries where people are more educated than USA). So it really depends. I didn't see the relevance to the topic on what the title says after listening, just felt more blessed than I'm open minded to everyone. Great speaker however, and it's nice he feels very patriotic especially when other countries don't have certain blessing like US.

I agree with coming from humble beginnings. Any parents out there who have become successful have any tips on how to raise their kids to have the same hunger.? I'm struggling with this. Thnks!

I spent a ton of time with my 3 children and I fought my husband for it, we are divorced after 37 years, he always cheated. We bought a house. That's about it. But we had some vacations, a few nice cars. I showed them love and made them do homework, my claim to fame is that we got them into church, albeit late, and brief. one is still a believer, 2 are atheists. One is a USC graduate in computer engineering, got straight A's for his bachelors degree onwards. The other son is a nurse and married a teacher, just bought a house down the road. Life today is. very hard, do your best when it comes to your children, research and ask questions, don't give up. My last child is a bartender, she has traveled a lot but now home due to Covid. But I have few regrets in raising them. I took them to every park, every theme park, every major attraction in our state, we played sports, we shopped, we ate out, we talked, I kept my eye on them but I let them do a lot on their own (more than most), I did not over schedule them, all their friends hung at our house, I fed them lots and they kept coming back, we laughed and laughed whenever we COULD. But we were not criminals or liars, school was priority and I made them think it was fun but it really was not in public school its a war zone.but they survived and are stronger and happy for it. Now days, not sure I would force public school on them, at least not in our district.

General parenting: Read to them. Spend time, set boundaries, love your spouse, set an example of self care. Expect greatness. Take them to the church of Jordan Peterson. Tom is next! Why do your kids have to have a hunger? If you are wealthy, maybe they become the poets, the teachers, the healers, the farmers that are needed. Let them be who they are. Don’t be stingy with money.

Negative events are not permanent unless we accept it/them as such. Apply the old adage, whether you believe you can or can't, you're correct. It's truly a matter of perception/attitude/mindset.
